ELLENBORO - Baxter Heriot Cooper II, 26, of 539 Grover Road, died May 11, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Forest City. Burial will follow at a later date in Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery in Ellenboro. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6 until 8 at Pilgrim Baptist Church.
Burke Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth White
Kenneth Kay White, 57, of 620 Louise Avenue, died May 12, 2002. A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he worked as a band saw operator for Ethan Allen Furniture Company in Maiden.
Survivors include two daughters, Lesia Whitener and Wendy Hester, both of Lincolnton; a brother, Jerry White of Lincolnton; two sisters, Faye Peeler and Teresa Faulkner, both of Lincolnton; and six grandchildren.

Clara Suttles
FOREST CITY - Clara Smith Suttles, 90, of 302 Mayes Road, died May 14, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen. Burial will follow in Sandy Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
Born in Polk County, she was a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church, and worked in the textile industry until retirement.
Survivors include five sons, Fred Suttles of Rosman, Lawrence Suttles of Lincolnton, Loyd Suttles of Charlotte, Edward Suttles of Ellenboro, and Walter Suttles Jr. of Mayo, S.C.; one daughter, Betty Orr of Hendersonville; two step-sons, Charles Humphries of Mooresboro and Alan Humphries of Lenoir; a step-daughter, Betty McCraw of Cliffside; 31 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; and a number of great great-grandchildren.

Baxter Cooper II

He was born in Rutherford County.
Survivors include his parents, Carol Ann Martin Cooper and Baxter Heriot Cooper Sr. of the home; two brothers, Randy Neil Cooper of Ellenboro and Joel Richard Cooper of Alabama; two sisters, Jan Soares of York, S.C. and Christi Edmunds of Chester, S.C.; and his grandmother, Marguerite Martin of Ellenboro.

He was employed with Arnell Custom Homes in Denver.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy S. Eatman; two daughters, Rebecca Eatman of Wendell and Marcia Carpenter of Roanoke Rapids; one son, Chad Carpenter of Roanoke Rapids; a step-daughter, Angela O’Guin of Durham; two step-sons, Todd Henderson of Raleigh and Michael Barham of Oklahoma; his father, Marshall D. Eatman Sr. of Vale; and one sister, Sylvia Holmes of Raleigh.

Laura Drum
MAIDEN - Laura Frances Propst Drum, 73, of 701 South Main Avenue, died May 13, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at Mays Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Catawba County, she was a winder for Carolina Mills.
Survivors include two sons, Roger Lee Propst of Maiden and Terry Dean Propst of Claremont; three daughters, Kay Pruitt and Barbara Reynolds, both of Maiden, and Becky Hurt of Vale; one step-son, Fred Drum of Maiden; two step-daughters, Phyllis Smith and Patsy Willis, both of Maiden; six grandchildren, Laurie Ann Self, Todd Hurt, Shane Reynolds, Jason Pruitt, Brandon Propst, and Tiffany Hall; and three great-grandchildren.

Cornelius Edwards
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Cornelius Hiawatha Edwards, 67, of 415 Crocker Road, died May 12, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, was self-employed as a brick contractor and had served in the U.S. Army. He organized and was a member of the Maddox Choir. At his church he was a deacon and past chairman of the deacon board, past superintendent of the Sunday School, and a member of the Southern Crusaders for 50 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Adams Edwards; one daughter, Denise Walker of Charlotte; five sons, Calvin H. Edwards and Jett Edwards, both of Tokyo, Japan, Hiawatha Beam Edwards, and Nitural LeAundra Edwards, both of Charlotte, and Michael Todd Edwards of Kings Mountain; his mother, Maggie Bess Edwards of Lincolnton; one brother, Charles Edwards of Lincolnton; a sister, Mozelle Coulter of Lincolnton; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ruth Chapman
Ruth Scronce Chapman, 78, of Cardinal Health Care, formerly of 1267 Howard Creek Mill Road, Vale, died May 13, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Reepsville Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was an inspector for sock manufacturing until retirement.
Survivors include two brothers, Bob Scronce and T.C. Scronce, both of Vale; and three sisters, Geneva Ingle of Vale, Betty Shrum of Lincolnton and Pansy Saine of Maiden.

DENVER - Thomas Glen Hedgespeth, 46, formerly of Palmyra, Ind., died May 1, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6 at Swarens Funeral Home in Ramsey, Ind. Burial followed in Horners Chapel Cemetery in Fredericksburg, Ind.
He was employed with Hall Contracting Corporation of Charlotte and was an active member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include three sisters, Barbara Jean East of Fairdale, Ky., Sharon Faye Shirley of Alvaton, Ky., and Janet Lynn Hedgespeth of New Albany, Ind.; and one brother, George Eric Hedgespeth of Corydon, Ind.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mose Mason
Mose Lee Mason, 79, of 919 Wilma Sigmon Road, died May 11, 2002. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel at E.F. Drum Funeral Home. Burial followed in May’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
He was born in Lincoln County.
Survivors include two sons, Tony Mason of Stanley and Carroll Mason; four step-grandchildren, Tony Prather of Maiden, Linda Harris of Gastonia, Pam Lineberger and Billy Ray Daniel, both of Lincolnton; a brother, Ed Mason of Boger City; a sister, Inez Whitworth of Iron Station; a special companion, Mary Ann Taylor of Lincolnton; four grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

Bess Lane
CHARLOTTE - Bess Loggins Lane, 73, died May 14, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church where she attended. Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at the church.
Born in High Point, Davidson County, she helped during WWII at Charlotte’s Camp Greene, was the past President of the Quota Club of Charlotte, was employed by Sharon Towers as a switchboard operator.
Survivors include one daughter, Teresa Lane Strickland of Charlotte; two sons, Graddie Lane Jr. of Lake Norman and Bill Lane of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Helen Loggins Yates of High Point; and two grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Lane, and Abigail Kathleen Lane, both of Jacksonville, Fla.
Memorials may be made to the Quota Club of Charlotte or Hospice of Charlotte.

PUMPKIN CENTER - Vernon Allen Shull, 82, of 3297 Ginger Lane, died May 15, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, he worked as a foreman for Cherryville Foundry until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Shull; five sons, John D. Shull of Shelby, Richard Shull of Atlanta, Ga., Larry Shull of Spartanburg, S.C., Roger Shull of Conover, and Mike Shull of Cherryville; three step-daughters, Jeanne Reynolds of Charlotte, Sue Johnson of Buckhead, Ga., and Carla Lazenby of Charlotte; four brothers, Caldwell Shull, Pete Shull, and Jerry Shull, all of Cherryville, and Bill Shull of Waco; two sisters, Lorene Beam of Cherryville, and Betty Williams of Shelby; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Willetts Stiles Jr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Willetts G. “Bill” Stiles Jr., 68, died May 14, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Churchland Chapel at Loving Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8 at the funeral home.
Born in Portsmouth, Va., he was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, and worked for Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 30 years until retirement. He was the 1967 Past Master of Tidal Wave Masonic Lodge #263 and current secretary, District Deputy Grand Master, and member of the Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, and Khedive Temple in Charlotte, N.C.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Stiles; three daughters, Chris Stone of Lincolnton, Lisa DePauw of Conover, and Nancy Reid of Portsmouth; a sister, Joyce Johnson of Lady Lake, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Heather Stephenson, Jimmy Stone, Beth Reid, and Austin Reid.
Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church; or the Masonic Home.

MAIDEN - Lucille Hewitt Withers, 91, of 1949 East Maiden Road, died May 15, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Catawba County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Mickey Withers of Denver, and Wayne O’Neal Withers of Plantation, Fla.; one daughter, Helen Withers Crowell of Lenoir; a brother, Roy Hewitt of Maiden; a sister, Ruby Henley of Maiden; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, she worked at Valdese General Hospital as a licensed practical nurse until retirement and was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Ruby Powell of Vale, Clara Rhoney of Valdese, and Kathryn Yarbro of Lincolnton; a brother, Matthew Miller of Shelby; 11 grandchildren, Judy Howell, Penny Hullette, Reid Parker, Michael Rhoney, Sandra Lowman, Joyce Warlick, Gayle Oaks, Ronnie Gantt, Brenda Gantt, Lynn Crump, and Stanley Yarbro; 16 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Gaston County, she worked for Rhyne Houser Manufacturing for 27 years until retirement.
Survivors include her daughter, Peggy G. Heafner of Cherryville; one sister, Sue Webb of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Ben Heafner, and Sandra A. Edwards; and three great-grandchildren.

Ralph Greene Sr.
SHELBY - Ralph Miller Greene Sr., 86, of 511 West Sumter Street, died May 16, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.
Born in Cleveland County, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force, Pacific Theater, was the owner and operator of the Cleveland Barber Shop and was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Alja Blackwell Greene; two sons, Ralph Miller Jr. of Charleston, S.C., and Dale D. Greene Sr. of Shelby; and four grandchildren, Joel Miller Greene, Michael Dale Greene, Dale Drew Greene Jr., and Patrick Olsby Greene.
