Born in New Hampshire, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the American Legion Post #17, and worked as a supervisor for Groveton Paper Company.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Jewell; five daughters, Wanda Prescher of Rodchester, Minn., Paula Despres of Sun Cook, N.H., Brenda Reilly of Ballston Spa, N.Y., Donna Forrest of Denver, and Shawna Brock of Fredricksburg, Va.; three brothers, John Jewell, and Ernest “Jake” Jewell, both of Groveton, N.H., and Richard Jewell of Holyoke, Mass.; a sister, Pauline Latour of Holyoke, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

CHERRYVILLE - Thelma Margaret Hammitt Homesley, 87, died July 2, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Born in Spartanburg, S.C., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, J. Harold Homesley of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a daughter, Lynette Taylor of Lexington, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Melinda Parker, Sandra Queen, Eugenia Beam, Edwina Aaron, Paula Homesley, Hal Homesley, Mitch Homesley, and Bo Taylor; and 13 great-grandchildren.

NEWTON - Loy Williams, 78, of 3956 South Olivers Cross Road, died July 2, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Catawba County, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, and a farmer. He also worked in the furniture industry.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy W. Williams; a daughter, Vicky W. Danner of Catawba; two brothers, Troy Williams of Newton and Christopher Williams of Maiden; and seven sisters, Eve Len Caldwell, and Macie Beal, both of Lincolnton, Mossie Parker of Maiden; Gladys McElveen, Nellie Detter, Karen Sain, and Christine Burgess, all of Newton.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a machinist at Vermont American.

CATAWBA - Paul D. Rufty, 78, of 1980 Robert Rufty Lane, died July 3, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Center United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday from 6 until 8 p.m.
Born in Catawba County, he was a U.S. Navy WWII and Korean Conflict veteran, a Navy retiree and was retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyards. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserves.
Survivors include his wife, Maudine C. Rufty; four sons, Brian Rufty of Berea, Ky., Terry Rufty of Catawba, Boyd Rufty of Hickory, and Garry Rufty of Newton; a daughter, Twila Deal of Catawba; two sisters, Mary Jo Lambert of Catawba, and Tuby Moore of Newton; 13 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
