Born in Lincoln County, he was employed as an electrician for Vermont American.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy “Dot” Rhyne Scronce; a daughter, Lisa Scronce Creech of Lincolnton; a brother, Joe David Scronce of Vale; and three sisters, Linda Scronce Seagle, Nannie Bell Scronce Mahala, and Thelma Scronce Day, all of Lincolnton.

SHELBY — Ruth Ell Humphries “Snookie” Degree, 32, of 418 Airline Avenue, died July 20, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today in the S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel at Enloe Mortuary. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.
Born in Cleveland County, she was employed with the Les and Deborah Farfour family for about 10 years.
Survivors include a son, Charles Roger Degree of Shelby; a sister, Genevive Tetteh of Boston, Mass.; two grandchildren, Charletta Degree, and Mieko Degree; and five great-grandchildren.

MAIDEN — Carlton Bryan “C.B.” Lynch Jr., 81, of 3096 Buffalo Shoals Road, died July 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Ivey Memorial United Methodist Church. Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Navy, WWII veteran, and worked as a dairy farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Emma Goodson Lynch; two sons, Kenneth D. Lynch of Lincolnton, and Rex A. Lynch Sr. of Maiden; a daughter, Sharon L. Lynch of Hickory; two brothers, James Lynch of Greensboro, and Fred Lynch of Shelby; a sister, Irene McSwain of Kings Mountain; and three grandchildren, Rex A. Lynch Jr., Carla L. Helms, and Bryan M. Lynch.

Nancy Morgan
RALEIGH — Nancy Idaree Hawkins Morgan, 71, formerly of Cherryville, died July 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Wesleyan Church in Cherryville. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at First Wesleyan following the service.
Born in Rutherfordton, she was a volunteer Girl Scout Leader, tutored reading at East Elementary, volunteered with the Band Boosters at Cherryville High School, and coached the Ferguson Hardware Girl’s Softball team. She was also very active at her church.
Survivors include two daughters, Danita Jan Morgan of Raleigh, and Lynn Morgan Pope of Hendersonville; two sisters, Jane Hawkins, and Becky Camp, both of Rutherford County; and three brothers, Halys Hawkins of Rutherford County, Bertie Amos of Salisbury, and Rommie Hawkins of Huntersville.

Jose Deleon
Jose Manuel Deleon, 19, died July 16, 2002. A memorial service was held at the home of his step-sister, Ruby Heffner.
In addition to his step-sister, survivors include his mother, Michel Lail of Nashville, Tenn.; his father, Dario Deleon of Del Rio, Texas; a brother, Douglas Broome of Maiden; and a sister, Carmelita Broome of Crown Point, Ind.

DENVER — Boyce DeLynn Jetton, 71, formerly of Charlotte, died July 22, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel at Raymer Funeral Home. Interment followed in Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Born in Huntersville, he was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church, and a former police officer with the Town of Davidson. He worked with TCT Trucking Company.
Survivors include his brother, Roger A. Jetton of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a sister, Carol Irvin Wilfong of Gastonia.

Alfred Morrell
SHELBY — Alfred Morrell, 83, of 1823 Quail Run Drive, died July 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church. Born in New Orleans, La., he was a U.S. Army, WWII veteran, and served as Staff Sergeant. He was employed with Cleveland County Schools, and later he worked for Drexel Heritage Furnishings, Inc. as an upholster until retirement.
Survivors include his daughter, Yolanda Morrell Johnson of Shelby; a stepson Kenneth Francois of New Orleans, La.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

MCADENVILLE — Mary Aileen Kirby Carter, 85, of 209 Riverside Drive, died July 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. today at First Wesleyan Church in Gastonia. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at the church.
Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a member of McAdenville Wesleyan Church, and a homemaker. She helped her husband often in his ministry of the church for almost 58 years.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Yancy H. Carter; a daughter, Yvonne Holland of Greensboro; two sons, Harold Carter of Dallas and Sonny Carter of McAdenville; five grandchildren, Brandon Carter, Harris Carter, Michelle Hatley, Ginger Riggs, and Jeffrey Holland; and four great-grandchildren.

IRON STATION — Fannie Cupp Heffner, 87, of 5001 Highway 73, formerly of Springwood, died July 25, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Carothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday.
Born in Opelikla, Ala., she was a member of Centerview Baptist Church, and worked at Acme Spinning until retirement.
Survivors include three sons, Bremonne “Monty” Heffner of Maiden, John Heffner of Lincolnton, and Bobby Heffner of Mt. Holly; two daughters, Peggy Pressley and Mara Maxwell, both of Iron Station; two sisters, Martha Mullis of Calabash and Joyce Bowlin of Lowell; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a carpenter and a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II.
