Richard Newton
CHERRYVILLE - Charles Richard Newton, 70, died Jan. 1, 2003. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
A lifelong resident of Cherryville, he was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, a Carolina Freight Carriers Corporation retiree with 41 years service and was most recently employed at Cherryville’s ABC store. He was a member of American Legion Post #100, where he was the former Athletic Officer. At his church, he attended the Men’s Sunday School Class and the Lutheran Men in Mission and was presently serving as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent.
Survivors include his wife Elizabeth Ann Houser Newton; a son, Charles Newton of Lexington, S.C.; a daughter, Mary McSwain of Cherryville; and five grandchildren, Meg Newton, Michael Newton, Tripp McSwain, John Michael McSwain, and Mary Beth McSwain.

Marshall Harmon
NEWTON - Marshall Harmon, 79, of 515 S. Ashe Ave., died Dec. 31, 2002. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Burke Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the chapel.
Born in Iredell County, he was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran, an electronic engineer with Bell South and a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy B. Harmon; a son Marshall Stanford “Stan” Harmon of Farmville; a daughter, Marsha H. Williams of Morehead City; a brother, Dwight Harmon of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Ailean H. Daniels of Statesville and Frances H. Whitley of Raleigh; and four grandchildren, Abel S. Harmon, Tegan M. Harmon, Gillian M. Williams and Berneice M. Williams.

Madge Smith
Madge Dellinger Smith, 77, of Lincoln Nursing Center, died Jan. 2, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Boger City Wesleyan Church. Burial will follow in the Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. tonight at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, she worked in assembly in the furniture industry.
Survivors include two sons Darrell Dellinger and Don Dellinger, both of Lincolnton; one daughter, Jane Hines of Lincolnton; one brother, Larry Reep of Lincolnton; three sisters, Jackie Reep and Clara Houk of Lincolnton, and Mildred Perkins of Pumpkin Center; six grandchildren, Deedy Fox, Mark Dellinger, LaDonna Jackson, Dustin Sigmon, Melissa Cherry, and Connie Cherry; and six great-grandchildren.

William Sanders
SHELBY - William Edward “Eddie” Sanders, 74, formerly of 214 Buffalo St., died Jan. 1, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the S.T. Enloe Memorial Chapel at Enloe Mortuary. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in York County, S.C., he was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and worked for John McArthur for about 25 years.
Survivors include three sons, Freddie Lee Gill of Atlanta, Ga., William Gill of South Carolina, and Jerry Gill of Virginia; one sister, Ida Bell McClain of Shelby; four grandchildren; and a special friend, Ella Mae Johnson.
Ralph Stilwell Sr.
Ralph Eugene Stilwell Sr., 64, of 211 West Church St., formerly of Mt. Holly, died Dec. 31, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Castanea Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was retired from Union Carbide.
Survivors include four sons, Ralph Eugene Stilwell Jr. of Mt. Holly, Richard Earl Stilwell of Lincolnton, Johnny Dwayne Stilwell of Lowell, and Ronnie Dean Stilwell of West Virginia; a daughter Paula Renee Maldonado of Gastonia; 12 grandchildren; seven sisters, Dorothy Odell Hager of Lowesville, Vida Ilene Hager of Denver, Lola Avery of New Bern, Juanita Mashburn of Mt. Born in Lincoln County, he retired from Leaksville Woolen Mills after 33 years.
Survivors include a son, Jim Robinette of Denver; four daughters, Iola R. Howard of Denver, Jane R. Harris of Lucia, Sarah R. Ballard of Maiden and Rene R. Duckworth of Denver; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Born in Gaston County, he was retired from Talon of Stanley as an overhaul mechanic after 35 years and was a former part-time employee at Cherryville Country Club.

Born in Lincoln County, she was the retired owner/operator of Orfanedes Shoe Shop in Homestead, Fla. and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church where she was in the adult choir.
Survivors include a son, Mike Eaker of Cherryville; a daughter, Penny Homesley of Cherryville; a brother, David Huss of Gastonia; two sisters, Annie Huss Smith of Cherryville and Jenny Huss Godfrey of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Joseph Grzesiak Jr.
Joseph Anthony Grzesiak Jr., 72, of 2813 Woodgate Road, died Jan. 4, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Living Word Penecostal Holiness Church. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery with DAV military grave rites. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He worked as a custodian at S. Ray Lowder Elementary School.
Surviving is his wife, Helen Taylor Grzesiak.

Born in Lincoln County, he attended North Newton Baptist Church and was the owner/operator of Rumfelt Appliance Company. He was a member of the Quarter Century Plus Club with 26 years of service with Carolina Mills.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara C. Rumfelt; two daughters, Pamela Burgin of Alexis and Kathy Girtman of Brunswick, Ga.; three sisters, JoAnn Giles, Shirley Lynn and Pauline Barnhill, all of Lincolnton; and four grandchildren, Candace Burgin, Jeremy Burgin, Ashlee Girtman and Eric Girtman.

Born in Mecklenburg County, he was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church and retired from Duke Power Company after 31 years. After retirement, he was the co-owner of Pope’s Grading Company and Vice-President of Pope’s Quality Landscaping.
Survivors include his wife, Erma Christopher Pope of N. Myrtle Beach; a son, Chris Pope of Denver; a daughter, Ann Pope Shields of New Kent, Va.; a sister, Marie P. Pope of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, John Thomas Auten, Brittany McCrosky, Christopher Lee Pope and Katlin Danielle Pope.
