Lois Hines
Lois Hines, age 81, of Greensboro, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Blumenthal Jewish Home in Greensboro. She was born in Alexander County July 27, 1921, the daughter of the late Derr L. Hines and Grace White Hines. She was retired from Sears and Roebuck Company in Greensboro and was a member of New Salem Presbyterian Church in Stony Point. Survivors include three sisters, Ruth Martin of Greensboro, Frankie Joyce of Westfield, N.C., and Doris Martin of Stony Point, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at New Salem Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ronald Vaughn officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Robert Glynn Martin
Robert Glynn Martin, age 79, of Harris Bridge Rd., Stony Point, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. He was born in Iredell County November 24, 1923, the son of the late James Washington Martin and Julia Lackey Martin. He was a retired farmer and was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 88th Infantry Division, 349 Infantry Regiment, 2nd Platoon Company D, with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in Italy during World War II. Mr. Martin was a member of V.F.W. Post 10,000 of Hiddenite, where he served on the Honor Guard. He was raised a Master Mason in 1954 and was a member of Stony Point Masonic Lodge #593. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Payne Martin; four brothers, Marsh Martin, Rance Martin, Charlie Martin, and Gilbert Martin; and one sister, Rachel M. Goodwin. Survivors include one son, Barry Martin and wife Marie of Stony Point; two daughters, Debra M. Miller and husband Terry and Jill M. Rufty and husband Randy, all of Stony Point; one sister, Emma M. Lumm of Kernersville; and five grandchildren, Grant and Noah Miller, Bobby and Brandon Martin, and Joe Rufty, all of Stony Point. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 11, 2003, at Pisgah United Methodist Church with Dr. Gary Revels and Rev. Harold McAlpin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Masonic Burial Rites provided by Stony Point Masonic Lodge #593 and Military Burial Rites provided by V.F.W. Post 10,000. Memorials may be made to V.F.W. Noah Edward Sipes
Noah Edward Sipes, age 81, of Statesville, died Friday, April 11, 2003, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. He was born in Caldwell County August 30, 1921, the son of the late Noah Sipes and Ivey Jackson Sipes. He was educated in the Iredell County Schools and was retired from Southern Screw in Statesville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II, and was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnessess.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a number of brothers and sisters. Survivors include five sons, Noah Edward Sipes, Jr., of Stony Point, Daniel William Sipes of Atlanta, Ga., and James David Sipes, Timothy Keith Sipes, and Jerry Wayne Sipes, all of Statesville; thirteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Norma Jane Tinsley Corn
Norma Jane Tinsley Corn, age 54, of Statesville, died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. She was born in Buncombe County October 4, 1948, the daughter of the late James Tinsley and Georgia Bailey Tinsley. She was a teacher assistant and bus drivier for Scotts Elementary School. She was a member of V.F.W. Post 2031 Ladies Auxiliary in Iredell County and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Lee Corn. Survivors include one son, Jason Corn and wife Paula of Statesville; two daughters, Jan (Bunnie) Patterson and husband Todd of Statesville and Brittany Corn of the home; one brother, Joseph Browning of Asheville; three grandchildren, Tyler and Joseph Patterson and Patricia Corn, all of Statesville; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service was conducted Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville with Rev. Mister Charles Brantley officiating. Nell Rimmer Weaver
Nell Rimmer Weaver, age 81, of Ruritan Park Rd., Stony Point, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville following an extended illness. She was born in Iredell County August 23, 1921, the daughter of the late Roy Hayward Rimmer and Gertrude Murdock Rimmer. She was retired from Valley Nursing Center as a health care worker and was a member of Millersville Baptist Church. Mrs. Weaver was also a member of Stony Point Eastern Star #58. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Paul Deal; one son, Jimmy Deal; two brothers, James Knox Rimmer and Robert Leo Rimmer; and one sister, Helen Adams. Survivors include her husband, Albert “Bo†Weaver of the home; one son, Tommy Deal and wife Rebecca of Hollywood, Fla.; one daughter, Judy Sweet and husband Earl of Taylorsville; one brother, Franklin Rimmer of Stony Point; three sisters, Doris Overcash of Stony Point, Margie Moore of Statesville, and Willie Little of Taylorsville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 30, 2003, at Millersville Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Orren and Rev. Eddie Jolly officiating. Burial followed in the Stony Point Cemetery.

Mamie Brown Kennedy
Mamie Brown Kennedy, age 77, of Kenansville, N.C., departed this life Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She joins her husband of fifty years, Oliver Allen “Ted†Kennedy, who preceded her to Glory on July 4, 1997. She will be remembered always for her unconditional faith in God. She is survived by one child, Donna Kennedy Hedrick and husband Edward Lawrence Hedrick, IV, of Taylorsville; one grandson, Edward Lawrence Hedrick, V, whom she loved dearly; two brothers, Norman Brown and wife Lessie and Richard Brown and wife Grace, all of Beulaville, N.C.; two sisters, Francis Brock and husband J.C. of Wallace, N.C., and Virginia Cottle of Teachy, N.C. She also is survived by many, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews. She loved each and everyone of her family members deeply. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Community Funeral Home in Beulaville with burial at East Duplin Memorial Gardens in Beulaville. Edward Earl Stout
Edward Earl Stout, age 78, of Taylorsville, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Johnson County, Tenn., September 15, 1924, the son of the late Alexander Stout and Sarah Shoun Stout. He was employed as Maintenance Supervisor for the Town of Taylorsville for twelve years. Prior to his employment with the Town of Taylorsville, he was employed with Westinghouse for twenty-two years. Mr. Stout was a veteran of the U.S. Airforce, serving during World War II, and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed playing the guitar and was an accomplished gardener and master woodworker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Stout and Spencer Stout, and one sister, Maude Kyte. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Kathryn Denney Stout of Taylors-ville; one sister, Ona Peters of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 2, 2003, at the Alexander Funeral Service Chapel in Taylorsville with Rev. Gary Jennings officiating. Burial followed in the Taylorsville City Cemetery. Carolyn Flowers Mayes
Carolyn Flowers Mayes, age 68, of Radio Rd., Taylorsville, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory following an illness of six months. She was born in Watauga County February 20, 1939, the daughter of the late Haskell George Flowers and Aretha Grimes Flowers. She was a former employee of Carolina Glove Company and was retired from Shurtape Technologies. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary, Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the senior choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Annie Mae Green Flowers McNeil. Survivors include her husband, Willis Mayes; three daughters, Clarissa Nell Causey of Taylorsville, Theresa Ann M. Lackey and husband Craig of Hiddenite, and Ingrid Regina Smith and husband Marvin of Taylorsville; a son, Willis Mayes, Jr., and wife Tonya of Taylorsville; a step-daughter, Zenobia Gaines and husband Chris of Lenoir; two brothers, Ronald G. Flowers and wife Vivian and Robert G. Flowers and wife Paula, all of Washington, D.C.; and twelve grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 30, 2003, at New Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Vincent Linney, Rev. Ardeal Roseboro, Rev. Jeffrey Miller, and Rev. William Little officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Effie Hendren Levan
Effie Hendren Levan, age 98, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 2, 2003, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville following a brief illness. She was born in Hiddenite, Alexander County, January 28, 1905, the daughter of the late William Baxter Hendren and Minnie Adams Hendren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of seventy-two years, Jefferson Marsh Levan; a son, Kenneth Marsh Levan; a sister, Flora H. Millsaps of Hiddenite; two brothers, Glenn Hendren and W.B. Hendren, Jr., of Hiddenite and Clay Hendren of Statesville. Survivors include a son, Alfred Landon Levan and wife Maxine of Statesville; three daughters include Robena Levan Lackey of Winston-Salem and Loretta Levan Englebert and husband Howard and Patricia Levan Crider and husband Jim, both of Statesville; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Kenneth (Jean) Levan of Statesville; nine grandchildren, Janice Lackey Pickeral, Gary Lackey, Jeff Levan, Terry Levan, Kent Englebert, Lori Englebert Hawkins, Michael Levan, Melissa Crider Bass, and Phillip Crider; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lona H. Teague of Statesville and Ruth H. Fox and Thelma H. Russell, both of Hiddenite. Mrs. Effie was known to her family and friends as a loving mother and a fine Christian lady who upheld God’s work in everything she did. For fifty years, Mrs. Effie resided in the Trinity Community off Wilkesboro Hwy. Her interests included gardening, needlework, and quilting. In her spare time, she crocheted afghans for residents in the nursing home for Christmas gifts. Fifteen months ago, Mrs. Effie suffered a massive stroke which paralyzed her right side and her ability to speak. At this point, she became a resident of Autumn Care in Statesville. Although unable to speak, she continued to make friends and to bless the lives of fellow residents, nurses, and doctors. Mrs. Effie was privileged to have many great caretakers some who included Jane Forsyth, Helen Cashion, and Gay Hendren. Mrs. Effie and her children thought of these ladies as family. Mrs. Effie would not want us to mourn her death but to celebrate her life, for now, she is in the presence of the Lord.Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at Yadkin Baptist Church in Statesville with Dr. J.B. Parker officiating. The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, June 4, 2003, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville. At other times, the family will assemble at the home of a daughter, Pat Crider, 126 Ashbrook Rd., Statesville.
