Lamon Lee Moretz

Lamon Lee Moretz, age 41, of Jake Reese Court, Taylorsville, died unexpectedly Monday, June 2, 2003, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
He was born in Caldwell County April 12, 1962, the son of Gary Austin and Cynthia Moretz, both of Purlear, N.C.
He was a graduate of Alexander Central High School and was owner/operator of C&M Truck Service in Hildebran.
He was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Mixed Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Alicia Matthews Moretz, whom he married March 6, 1993; a son, Dillon Moretz, and a daughter, Lacey Moretz, both of the home; a brother, Eric Austin of Alexander County; two sisters, Robin McAlpin and husband Mike of Chesapeake, Va., and Tina Ross and husband Sam of Vale.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 5, 2003, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Herman Baptist Church, with Rev. Paul Schronce and Rev. Wayne Huffman officiating.
The body will lie in state thirty minutes prior to the funeral hour.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, June 4, 2003, 7:30-9:00 p.m., at Adams Funeral Home in Taylorsville.
At other times, the family will assemble at the residence.

Mary Alice Fox Ingram

Mary Alice Fox Ingram, age 78, of Taylorsville, died Sunday, June 1, 2003, at Valley Nursing Center in Taylorsville.
She was born in Alexander County, May 21, 1925, the daughter of the late John Dallas Fox and Clara Catherine Bowman Fox.
She had been employed as a supervisor in the furniture industry at Lewittes and Broyhill Furniture Industries and had also worked in a cotton mill and at Schneider Mills.
Mrs. Ingram was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Lee Ingram; one brother, Earl Junior Fox; and one sister, Mildred Warren.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Tevepaugh and husband David and Linda Gwaltney and husband David, all of Taylorsville; two grandsons, Charles Tevepaugh of Conover and Jason Gwaltney of Taylorsville; two granddaughters, Dawn Tevepaugh of Conover and Stacy Gwaltney of Taylorsville; three brothers, John Richard “Buck” Fox, Frank Fox, and Jimmy Fox, all of Statesville; one sister, Evelena Lowe of Taylorsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at 4:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, Hwy. 16, South, Taylorsville, with Rev. Dan Spears officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers included David Tevepaugh, David Gwaltney, Charles Tevepaugh, and Jason Gwaltney.

Dr. Clarence Z. Deal

Dr. Clarence Z. Deal, age 69, of Hickory, died unexpectedly Monday, June 2, 2003, at his residence.
He was born in Catawba County July 27, 1933, the son of the late Alfred Deal and Estelle Rector Deal.
He was a lifelong member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, where he served as Chairman of Congregation, Chairman of School Board, Chairman of Elders, Chairman of Long Range Planning, and as a Sunday School teacher.
A retired optometrist, he was owner/operator of Family Vision Centers in both Hickory and Taylorsville.
Dr. Deal received his Doctorate of Optometry from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., in 1960.
He also attended Lenoir-Rhyne College and Appalachian State.
In 1970, he was appointed by Gov. Scott to serve on the Commission for the Blind.
He also served as Chairman of the Insurance Committee of the N.C. Optometric Society, Trustee Director of the Optometric Education Department for the State Society, Vice-President of the Department of Optometric Organization for the State Society, and was past president, secretary, and treasurer of the Catawba Valley Optometric Society.
Dr. Deal was a past member of the Hickory Jaycees and was a past member and president of the St. Stephens Kiwanis Club.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served from 1952 to 1956.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene Shook Deal of the home; one daughter, Jennifer Sherrill and husband Kevin of Hickory; one son, Ashley Deal and wife Vickie of Hickory; four grandchildren, Kristin Deal, Justin Deal, Brendan Sherrill, and Mallory Sherrill, all of Hickory; two step-grandsons, Wesley Wilson and Jimmy Wilson, both of Hickory; one sister, Mazel Bolick of Phoeniz, Ariz.; and one brother, Kenneth Deal of Carolina Beach, N.C.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, June 4, 2003, 6:30-8:00 p.m., at Hickory Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 5, 2003, at 4:00 p.m. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, with Pastor David Guelzow and Pastor Paul FitzPatrick officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Marsha Darlene Hollar Robbins

Marsha Darlene Hollar Robbins, age 53, of Granite Falls, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.
She was born in Catawba County May 7, 1950, the daughter of Mardecia Little Reid of Granite Falls and the late Rev. Henry Hollar.
She was a homemaker and a member of Concord Baptist Church in Granite Falls.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Franklin Robbins, Jr., of the home; one son, Frankie Robbins and wife Dawn of Hickory; one grandson, Mark Robbins of Hickory; two brothers, Rev. Keith Hollar and wife Holly of Wilmington and their children, Adam and Rachel Hollar Biggs, and Rick Hollar and wife Linda of Waxhaw and their children, Cathy, Diane, and Cristy.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning, June 18, 2003, at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. Tom McDonald and Rev. Dean Harold officiating and special music presented by Terry Crouse and Brenda Turner.
Burial followed in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

Robin Lynn Jones, age 37, of Conover, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Wilkes County.
She was born in Woodstock, Ill., April 1, 1966, the daughter of Ronald George Nelsen and Dottie Lou Freeman Stratton.
She was employed with J.C. Penny Warehouse and was a member of Tri City Baptist Church in Conover.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Dottie L. and Cliff Stratton of Taylorsville; her father, Ronald George Nelsen of Milwaukee, Wisc.; her husband, Carl Wayne Jones of Taylorsville; two sons, Joshua and Joseph Jones of Taylorsville; one brother, Ronald G. Nelsen, Jr., of Maiden; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, June 18, 2003, 6:00-8:30 p.m., at Alexander Funeral Service in Taylorsville.

Paul Stevenson Jonas, age 57, of Taylorsville, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
He was born in Alexander County September 8, 1946, the son of the late Butler Jonas and Effie Bentley Jonas.
He was owner/operator of The Sign Shop and was a member of Friendly Baptist Church in Taylorsville.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephania Warren and husband Dustin of Union Grove; a son, Aaron Jonas and wife Stephanie of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Jarreth Warren and Kendra Warren, both of Union Grove; two brothers, Melvin Jonas of Thomasville and Carroll Jonas of Southport; three sisters, Ruth Tyndall and husband Earl of Newton, Anne McDonald and husband Wayne of Taylorsville, and Faye Jonas of Taylorsville.

Trisha Ann Szymanski Tart

Trisha Ann Szymanski Tart, age 27, of Baltimore, Md., died Friday, May 16, 2003, at her residence following a nine-month battle with Stage IV Gastric Adenocarcinoma (stomach cancer).
She was born in Baltimore, Md., November 22, 1975, the daughter of John and Susan Cromwell and the late William Szymanski.
Survivors include her husband, Jason Wayne Tart, and their son, Tyler Jason Tart, age eighteen months, of Baltimore, Md.
Other survivors include Jason Wayne Tart’s grandmother, Lahoma W. Warren, and aunt, Trenna Warren, both of Hiddenite, and other family, Herb and Barbara Tart of Baltimore, Md., Bill and Glenda Wiseman and Brian and Emily Wiseman, all of Taylorsville, and Dana W. Lineberger of Maiden.
Trisha was laid to rest at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Baltimore, Md.

Marie Frances Martin Fink

Marie Frances Martin Fink, of Salisbury, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Magnolia Gardens in Spencer.
She had been in declining health for four months and seriously ill for a week.
She was born in Anson County, the daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Martin and Nicey Frances Richardson Martin.
She was educated in the Stanly County Schools and was a homemaker.
She was of the Methodist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Eugene Fink, and two brothers, Parmer Cleveland Martin and Andrew Thomas Martin.
Survivors include three daughters, Frances Ann Roberts and husband John Richard of Gastonia, Janet Yvonne Dry of Mt. Pleasant, and Rebecca Louise Fink of Tarboro; four sons, Harold Eugene Fink and wife Carolyn Ann of Concord, Donald Mitchel Fink of Granite Quarry, and Michael Dale Fink and wife Debbie and Tommy Fink, all of Salisbury; a sister, Betty Jean M. Lively of Charlotte; twelve grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Gold Hill with Rev. Floyd Bost officiating.
Burial followed in the Cole Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery in Concord.

Bertha Mae Hammer Cockrell

Bertha Mae Hammer Cockrell, age 80, of Calhoun Rd., Stony Point, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
She was born in Alexander County, December 20, 1922, the daughter of the late Marsh Hammer and Sarah Vickers Hammer.
She was a retired furniture worker and was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Stony Point.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Parks Cockrell, and one brother, Clyde Hammer. Survivors include one son, Tommy Cockrell of Stony Point; one daughter, Barbara Troutman of Statesville; one brother, Paul Hammer of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Ruth Hagler of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Chad Cockrell of Stony Point, Deedra C. Downs of Stony Point, Amy Ray of Mooresville, Kelly Moore of Statesville, and Buddy Troutman of Statesville; and ten great-grandchildren, Josh, Justin, Kasey, David, Baxter, Parker, Zoe, Kamryn, Colby, and Zackary.

Ossie Bowman Preslar

Ossie Bowman Preslar, age 100, of Hickory, and formerly of Bethlehem, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at Conover Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born in Caldwell County, July 22, 1902, the daughter of the late Daniel Wesley Bowman and Della Satterwhite Bowman.
A member of First Advent Christian Church in Hickory, she served as a Deaconess, a Sunday School teacher, and as a member of the WH & FM Society.
She was a homemaker but had previously been employed at Bethlehem Elementary School in the cafeteria.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey W. Preslar; an infant daughter; four brothers, Leroy Bowman, Ed Bowman, Dexter Bowman, and Sam Bowman; and three sisters, Veola Sherrill, Ora Starnes, and Essie Mundy. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Spencer and husband Kenneth of Hickory; a son, Ned Preslar and wife Marie of Monroe, Louisiana; four grandchildren, Ken W. Spencer, Deborah Munday, Donna Underwood, and Terry Preslar; five great-grandchildren, Geoffrey Underwood, Steven Spencer, Ben Munday, Regan Spencer, and Rex Spencer; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 13, 2003, at First Advent Christian Church in Hickory with Rev. Ronald Wong and Rev. Floyd Boston officiating.
Burial followed in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.
