Harold Edison Whitener, 81, of Burke County Road, Hickory, died May 29, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born May 24, 1920, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Fred and Grace Ashebranner Whitener.
A member of Royal Chapel Church of God, he retired as a traffic manager from Johnson Supply Company. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theatre.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Carroll Huffman.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Townsend Whitener; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gene and Mary Whitener of Greenville, S.C., and David and Peggy Whitener of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Glenn Rhoney of Cookesville; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Jim Leatherman of Hickory; two grandsons, Jeffrey and Tracie Rhoney of Hickory and Kevin and Nikki Whitener of Easley, S.C.; and four granddaughters and three grandsons-in-law, Sandra and Andy Towery of Vale, Janice and Joey Tucker of Chesnee, S.C., Wendy and Jay Earley of Flower Mound, Texas, and Julie Whitener of Charlotte.

A member of Pisgah United Methodist Church, he retired as a farmer. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 69th division of the 273rd infantry. A recipent of the Purple Heart, he was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 68 of Iredell County.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Jane Clanton.

Born Dec. 31, 1921, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late James S. and Bessie Lee Gaston Baker.
A member of Dulatown Presbyterian Church USA, she was a former elder, deacon and member of the Presbyterian women. She was a self-employed CNA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Paul Dula; a son, Stanley Michael Dula; two brothers, Stanley Baker and James Baker Jr.; a sister, Ernestine Baker.
Survivors include five sons and three daughters-in-law, James Allen Dula, Robert A. and Hazel Dula and Nathan E. and Selma Dula of Lenoir, Leslie M. and Jackie Dula of Greensboro and Paul Stewart Dula of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Madeline G. and Joe Hendrix of Lenoir, Cheryl Regina Dula Eubanks of Charlotte and Eleanor Dula Liles of Newton; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Issac G. Moore Jr. at 2 p.m. Saturday at her church.
Burial will be in Dulatown Community Cemetery.

GRANITE FALLS - Grace “Aunt Grace” Woods Estes, 91, of North Main Street, died May 30, 2001, at Caldwell County Hospice.
Born Nov. 16, 1909, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Ida Keller Woods.
A member of Clover Baptist Church, she was a former primary Sunday school teacher, a faithful “Prayer Warrier” and member of the Baptist Women. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Estes; and three brothers, Ed Woods, Ralph Woods and Jim Woods.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Estes of Hickory and Johnny Estes of Senoia, Ga.; two daughters, Betty E. Klutz of Granite Falls and Bennie E. Kincaid of Hudson; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Jim Kilby, Dean Harrold and Bill McNeill at 3 p.m. Saturday at her church.
Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

MAIDEN - Robert Neal Settlemyre, 57, of Hawthorne Drive, Statesville, died May 30, 2001, at his residence.
Born June 20, 1943, in Iredell County, he was a son of Vivian Eades Settlemyre of Sherrills Ford and the late Elmer Eugene Settlemyre.
A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a self-employed landscaper.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Andy Settlemyre.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include three daughters, Kimberly Williams of Denver and Tara Altman and Wendy White of Sherrills Ford; a brother, Tommy Settlemyre of King; and five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Revs. David Mills and Jeff Roberts at 11 a.m. Saturday in Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will remain at the church after the service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Raymond Pope; a daughter, Hilma Pope Deal; a son-in-law, Donald E. Deal; seven brothers, Lawrence Brinkley, Arthur Little, Marshall Little, Earl Little, Clarence Little, Charlie Little and Roy Little; two sisters, Winnie Little and Bessie Stafford; a grandson, Dennis Deal; and a granddaughter, Diane Deal Harris.

A member of Wallace Grove Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Virgil Smith Sr.; a son, William Virgil Smith Jr.; six brothers; and three sisters.

A member of A.R.P. Church in Taylorsville, he retired as owner and operator of Matheson Plumbing Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Coleman Matheson; two brothers, Frank “Red” Matheson and Hal Matheson; and three sisters, Willie Matheson Brown, Pink Matheson Moose and Mary Matheson Teague.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Matheson and Reita M. and Patrick Bryant of Taylorsville; a brother and sister-in-law, Allen M. “Mack” and Phyllis Matheson of Taylorsville; a sister and brother-in-law, Jean M. and Harold Rufty of Taylorsville; a grandson, Zachary H. and Elise Bryant; two great-grandchildren, Harrison Coleman Bryant and Colin McClain Bryant; and a number of nephews and nieces.

A Baptist, he retired as founder of Bumgarner Septic Tank & Grading.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Reid Bumgarner; twin sons; three brothers, James “Jim” Bumgarner, Ernest Bumgarner and Lloyd E. Bumgarner; and two sisters, Hope Martin and Inez Myers.
Survivors include two sons, Michael William Bumgarner of Hickory and Marty Dean Bumgarner of Granite Falls; a brother, John Bumgarner of Hickory; a sister, Lola B. Employed by Boyles Furniture Company in Hickory, he served in the U.S. Army and was a member of 82nd Airborne.

A former employee of Joan Fabrics of Hickory, he retired from Ivey Weavers.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles Randy Odom.
