CONOVER - Reece Allen McKown, 77, of N.C. 10 West, Hickory, died Oct. 19, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 14, 1923, in Houston, Texas, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Liberty Sam McKown.
A member of Corinth Baptist Church, he was the owner of AAA Heating and Cooling.
A member of Masonic Lodge in Vale, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Constance Bell Powers McKown.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice “Bea” Jenkins McKown; two sons, Daniel McKown and Carlyle McKown of Hickory; a daughter, Teresa Gower of Hickory; two stepsons, Charles McNeese of St. Louis, Mo., Lynn McNeese of Hickory; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Glenda and Maurice Jenkins of Statesville; a sister, Florence Nestor of Vallenicto, Calif.; six grandchildren, Amy J. Cummings, Maury Jenkins, Tommy Gower, Connie Connolly, Allen McKown and Jennifer Parnell; and five great-grandchildren.

Marie Allison Worley, 79, of Kingston Residence, died Oct. 20 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born May 15, 1921, in Marshall, she was the daughter of the late Perry A. and Cora Ramsey Allison.
A member of Viewmont Baptist Church, she taught the 6-year-old children's Sunday school class. She was assistant to the chaplain at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. Worley Jr.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter H. and Lana Lee Worley III and John R. and Jill Worley of Hickory; a sister Helen Tweed of Pontiac, Mich.; and a grandaughter, Jane Marie Worley of Hickory.

Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Hillary J. and Ola Blanche Sigmon.
A member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, she was employed for 43 years at Southern Hoisery Mills.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ollie Bowman Propes; a sister Viola Powell; and four brothers, Everette Propes, Howard Propes, Harold C. Propes and Grady Propes.

Catherine Hodge, 69, of Twenty- eighth Street, SW, died Oct. 19 at Catawba Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health.
Born May 19, 1931, in Hickory, she was the daughter of the late John and Amanda Little Hodge.
A member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, she was a trustee, former choir member and lay president. She retired from the Hickory City School System.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Henry Hodge Jr.
Survivors include husband, M.T. Hodge; a son, Perry Hodge of Hickory; two brothers Richard Hodge and Theodore Hodge of Hickory; two sisters, Savannah Washburn and Johnnie Mae Rinehardt of Hickory; and several nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Helen Nadine Bumgardner Greenhill, 62, of Hickory, died Oct. 20, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Born Aug. 1, 1938, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Wilma Sue Austin Bumgardner.
A member of Viewmont Baptist Church, she was involved in many church activities and was a former deacon and director of the preschool.
A member of Alpha Delta Kappa, she was a teacher at Brookford, Highland and Oakwood schools for 33 years.
Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Jones Greenhill; a son, Jeffery Jay Greenhill of Hickory; two brothers, James Wayne Bumgardner of Hudson and Lewis Edward Bumgardner of Hickory; a nephew, Stephen Bumgardner of Bethlehem; and three nieces, Susan Bumgardner and Denise Prince of Hudson and Carole King of Hickory.

Born Jan. 13, 1915, in Ashe County, she was a daughter of the late Marion S. and Flora Watson Phillips.
A member of Abee's Grove Baptist Church, she was a homemaker and retired as a nurses aide from Valdese General Hospital. She was also a former employee of Frances Louise and Pineburr Hosiery mills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Barus; a stepmother, Kiter Nichols Phillips; a brother, Smith Phillips; and a sister, Ora Lee Phillips Livingston.

A member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, she was a seamstress for a clothing manufacturer.

A member of Fellowship Baptist Church, he retired from General Motors Corp. and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Porter, Roland Porter and Bobby Porter; four sisters, Dorothy Hendricks, Carol Lauder, Vera Winkle and Beatrice Olinger.

A member and deacon of Gold Hill Missionary Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Army and retired from McClure Lumber.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, George Arthur McLean, James Monroe McLean and Carl McLean; and a sister, Virgie McLean.

TAYLORSVILLE - Leola Bobby Smith McCurdy, 65, of Odell Street, North Wilkesboro, died Oct. 17, 2000, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.
Born June 7, 1935, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie E. and Tallie Linney Smith.
Retired from Tyson Foods, she attended Macedonia Baptist Church and Smith Grove Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George McCurdy; and a daughter, Gaynell McCurdy.
Survivors include four sons, Mike McCurdy and Richard McCurdy of Wilkesboro, Allen McCurdy of Statesville and Larry McCurdy of Hiddenite; two daughters, Lisa McCurdy and Bernice McCurdy of Wilkesboro; two brothers, Pleas Smith of Taylorsville and Charlie Ed Smith of Stony Point; a sister, Mary Edna Lewis of New York; 19 grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a number of nephews and nieces.

A member of West Hickory Baptist Church, he retired from Piedmont Corrugated Specialty Company in the shipping department. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Thomas Brittain; and a son, Luther William Brittain.
Survivors include a brother, Clifford G. Brittain of Conover; four sisters, Cathern Parsons and Betty Cannon of Charlotte, Dorothy Todd of Marshall, Va., and Lorraine Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a number of nephews and nieces.

A member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Steadfast Sunday school class, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. A past chapter commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 43, he was a member of American Legion Post 21 and Masonic Lodge 316 of Morganton. He retired as a state employee.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Chevis Curtis; and three sisters, Dorothy Scruggs, Minnie Padgett and Ruth Bridges.

A former South Carolina Insurance Man of the Year, he was a member of Myrtle Beach Kiwanis, a former Jaycee and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Constance “Connie” M. Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, James A. and Irene Smith Jr. of Charleston; two stepchildren, David E. Moshoures of Myrtle Beach and Diane M. LENOIR - Wayne M. Davis, 69, of Canterbury Place, died Oct. 22, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 7, 1931, in Wilkes County, he was a son of the late Walter C. and Sally Hall Davis.
A member of Tabernacle Advent Christian Church, he was a carpenter and he played Minor League baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1950s. He also was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam Davis and Carl Davis.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Sherrill.

She was preceded in death by a son, J.D. Lutz; four brothers; three sisters; and a grandchild, Treasa Lutz.

LENOIR - Dorothy W. Tate, 91, of Bethesda Road, Winston-Salem, formerly of Lenoir, died Oct. 23, 2000, at the Oaks in Winston-Salem.
Born Nov. 13, 1908, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late William W. and Emma Lassiter Tate.
A lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, she worked as a secretary in the furniture industry until her retirement. She was educated in the Lenoir schools and Woman's College.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Fletcher Tate, Edwin Tate, Earl Tate, Vann Tate and Thad Tate; and three sisters, Ruth Henderson, Maude Adkins and Virginia Tate.
Survivors include four nephews, Thad W. Tate of Williamsburg, Va., William W. Tate of Lenoir, William V. Tate of Brunswick, Ga., and James R. Adkins of Burlington; and four nieces, Patricia T. Weaver and Emma Louise Henderson of Winston- Salem, Virginia T. Compton of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jane A. Norman of Greensboro.

Ervin “Mackie” Hedrick, 79, of J.A. Yount Farm Road, Conover, died Oct. 25, 2000, at the Brian Center East.
Born April 10, 1921, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Clarence L. and Anna Lee Lafone Hedrick.
A member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church, he was a former council member, Sunday school superintendent, choir member and served on the building committee. A member of American Legion Post 16 in Newton, he retired as a construction superintendent after 37 years from Herman Sipe Construction Co.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served with the American Division on New Guinea, three of the Philippine Islands and Japan. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal, Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He was also a former employee of Stone & Webster Engineers Corp. at Oak Ridge Tenn, Atomic Plant.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Hutter.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Hoke Hedrick; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Becky Hedrick of Conover; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Tom Miller of Concord; two nieces, Cynthia Burke of Colorado and Diane Streuling of Utah; three grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law, Todd Hedrick and Shawn Hedrick of Conover and Roderick and Beverly Miller of Richmond, Va.; and a granddaughter, Joy Miller of Charlotte.

PENSECOLA, Fla. - Kenneth R. Erickson, 49, of Conover, N.C., died Oct. 22, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla.
Born in 1951, in Duluth, Minn., he was a son of the Kenneth B. and Betsy Erickson and Joan and David Halstead of Duluth.
He worked for several companies in Duluth, Minn., and later for companies in Lincoln, Neb., Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg areas. He was a territory manager for Tidewater Healthcare in Conover.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Reidar Lund and Mabel and Bert Erickson.
Survivors include two sons, Nicklaus of Gainesville, Fla.. and Nolan of Pinellas Park, Fla.; his children's mother, Beth Ann Erickson of Pinellas Park, Fla.; a brother, Del Erickson of South Range, Wis.; a grandmother, Fern Lund of Duluth, Minn.; and a companion, Tracy Beerkircher of Conover.

A member of First Advent Christian Church, he was a deacon and usher. Retired as owner and operator of Madaris Hosiery, he was named the 1990 Distinguished Service Award of the Catawba County Hosiery Association.
A member of American Legion Post 48, Hickory Moose Lodge, Voiture 915 of the 4 & 8, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Buford Huffman, Cecil Huffman, Claude Huffman and Edwin Huffman; and four sisters, Bleka Lutz, Edith Herman, Zelma Flowers and Doris Detter.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Madaris Huffman; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bill Huffman and Daivd M. and Sherry Huffman of Hickory; a daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Steve Pope of Hickory; two sisters, Melba H. Born Sept. 17, 1927, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Allen H. and Eletha McVae Ramseur.
A member of Moore's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, he was a lifetime missionary and served as a local preacher. An associate minister to her former pastor, she retired from Cleveland Memorial Hospital after 25 years of service.
She was preceded in death by a son, the Rev. Sylvester Cansler Jr.; two brothers, Fredrick Ramseur and Leonard Ramseur; and a sister, Ruby Ramseur.
Survivors include her husband, Sylvester Cansler Sr.; a son, Linton Lamar Cansler of Lincolnton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glynnis and Curtis Jr. Ledbetter of the home and Bonita and William Hooper Jr. of Shelby; a foster daughter, Patricia Morris England of Maryland; two sisters, Clemetine Foster of Shelby and Helen R. Gary Lee Johnson, 52, of Teague Town Road, Taylorsville, died Oct. 23, 2000, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Born April 12, 1948, in Iredell County, he was a son of William E. and Arcola Goble Johnson of Taylorsville.
A member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, he served as president of United Methodist Men and was a Sunday school teacher, layperson, chairperson of pastor parish committee, UMYF counselor, choir member and chairman of administrative council. He also was a member of the building committee, cemetery committee and church softball team.
A service manager, he was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars with four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Army Commendation Medal for Valor.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Nancy Teague Johnson; a son and daughter-in-law, Andrew “Drew” L. and Emily Johnson of Hickory; a daughter, Cantresa “Candy” Lynn Johnson of the home; two sisters, Frances Johnson Sherrill of Catawba and Patricia Johnson Hoke of Claremont; and two grandsons, Dawson Troy-Lee Johnson of the home and Andrew Blake Johnson of Hickory.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Michael G. Purdy, 53, of Avon, Ind., formerly of Hickory, N.C., died Oct. 22, 2000, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 16, 1947, in Anderson, he was a son of Jack Purdy and Kathleen Hastings of Anderson.
He served with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War and was a self-employed plumber.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Bridget Purdy; a daughter, Treva Purdy of North Carolina; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, David and Tina Cox; a brother and sister-in-law, Steven and Peggy Purdy Sr. of Daleville; two granddaughters, Megan and Bradi; and a number of nephews and nieces.
A private memorial service was held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the V.F.W. in Anderson.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Lou Jolly Earp; seven sons, Richard Earp, Larry Earp and William Earp of Taylorsville, Paul Earp, Roy Earp, Ned Earp of Hiddenite and Raymond Earp of Lenoir; two daughters, Minnie Earp Levan of Hiddenite and Diane Chapman of Stony Point; a sister, Mamie McLelland; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
