MAIDEN - Clara McGee Spencer, 95, of Mount Olive Church Road, Newton, died June 3, 2001, at Abernethy Retirement Center. Born May 26, 1906, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late David L. and Hattie Brady McGee. The oldest member of Mount Ruhama Baptist Church, she worked in the textile industry for 39 years. She retired from Conover Glove and worked for Warlong Glove. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Ervin Spencer; two brothers, Robert McGee and John McGee; and two sisters, Eula Wesson and Grace Setzer. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, George H. and Dottie Spencer of Calabash, and Clifford and Iris Spencer and James and Jackie Spencer of Newton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Robert Isenhour and Jeanette and Johnnie Shubert of Newton; two sisters, Ethel Spencer of Newton and Edna Black of Conover; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren. KINGS MOUNTAIN - Joan Thomasson Ramsey, 66, of Monroe Avenue, died June 2, 2001, at her residence. Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Wesley Thomasson of Kings Mountain and the late Katherine Jones Thomasson. A member of First Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, she retired from the state of North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement Agency. She was preceded in death by a brother, Jackie Thomasson. Survivors, in addition to her father, include her husband, Ralph Ramsey; a son and daughter-in-law, Luke and Lorie Owens of Gastonia; a daughter and son-in-law, Keia O. and Floyd Payseur of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Johnny Thomasson of Kings Mountain, Danny Thomasson of Wilmington and Gerald Thomasson of Bessemer City; and four grandchildren, Chloey Payseur, Michael Woods, Marcas Owens and Marisa Owens. FALLSTON - Donell Daves, 82, of Eric Road, Shelby, died June 3, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 20, 1919, in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late James T. and Lala Hamrick Daves. A member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, he retired from the textile industry and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Irene Richards Daves; four daughters and sons-in-law, Deloris and J.W. “Jake” Bridges of New House, Verlene and Charles Suttles of Gastonia, Glenda and James Beaver of Shelby and Cynthia and Steve Watts of Fallston; five brothers, Homer Daves of Bostic, Huber Daves of Atlanta, Ga., and Jim Daves, Howard Daves and Jessie Daves of Shelby; three sisters, Doris Turner and Elaine Whitaker of Shelby and Patsy Long of Spartanburg, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. LINCOLNTON - Melvin T. McCleave, 75, of Ramseur Road, Maiden, died June 1, 2001, at his residence. Born Sept. 27, 1925, in Kings Creek, S.C., he was a son of the late James McCleave and Eula Bell Byers McCleave Fulton. A member of Hinton Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee, church treasurer and member of the United Methodist Men, he retired from Hickory Springs and served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Reed McCleave; two sons, Melvin McCleave and Edward William McCleave; and two brothers, J.B. McCleave and Quady McCleave. MORGANTON - Billy Joe Edwards, 32, of Mountain View Boulevard, died June 2, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Burke County, he was a son of Louise Gortney Edwards of Morganton and the late Boyd Edwards. He was a carpenter with Carolina Shelter. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Edwards. VALDESE - Dorothy Ada Brown Reid, 94, of Brookside Lane, Morganton, died June 2, 2001, at Grace Hospital. Born Aug. 3, 1906, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late John and Jennie Sherrill Brown. A member of Morganton Church of God, she was active in the Ladies Auxiliary and as secretary of her Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Jay Reid; a son, William Haskell Reid; and a daughter, Sandra Jean Reid. Survivors include five sons, Winfred B. Reid of Ocala, Fla., Ernest L. Reid and Lanny D. Reid of Lenoir, Jerry L. Reid of Forest City and Ronald J. Reid of Morganton; three daughters, Geneva R. Wilson of Valdese, Rita C. Roberson of Burton, Mich., and Louise H. Harry L. Whisnant, 89, of West N.C. 10, Newton, died June 2, 2001, at his residence. Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Robert L. “Bob” Whisnant and Genevieve Whitener. A lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church, he retired as the owner of Whisnant Grocery after 41 years. He also was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Whisnant, and two brothers, Fred Whisnant and David Whisnant. Born Aug. 15, 1924, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Lester and Ollie Blanton. A member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church, she was a homemaker. Nevert Propst Workman, 83, of Hickory, died June 4, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 23, 1917, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Dink H. and Mary Hudson Propst. A member of Sardis Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school, served on the altar guild and was a member of WELCA, she was employed with Spainhour6s for 36 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Scott Workman. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Scott and Cecil W. WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. - Wesley W. Holden, 70, died June 3, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction. Born June 30, 1930, in Highgate, he was a son of the late William D. and Gulida Clapper Holden. A member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where he served as deacon, elder and teacher, he worked in construction. He served nine years in the U.S. Army as a tank commander and 11 years in the U.S. Air Force as a flight engineer and airplane mechanic. Survivors include his wife, Crystal J. Mills of Vale, N.C.; two sons, Calvin Holden of St. Albans, W.Va., and Wesley Holden of Sissonville, W.Va.; three stepsons, Robert Mills of Wausau, Wis., Scott Mills of Arden, N.C., and Tony Mills of Watertown, Mass.; a sister, Beverly Dennis of Rutland; an uncle, Robert Holden of South Pomfret; and five grandchildren. Born Jan. 22, 1903, in Rockingham County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Nannie Elizabeth Brincefield Green. A member of Abernethy Memorial United Methodist Church in Newton, she was active with the Catawba County Republican Party, Meals on Wheels and the Senior Citizens group. HIGH POINT - John William “Dick” Slate Jr., 84, of Country Club Drive, died June 4, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Born May 10, 1917, in Walnut Cove, he was a son of the late Dr. John W. and Martha Meadows Slate. A member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, where he served as a junior warden and on the vestry, he was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He attended Wake Forest University and graduated from the University of North Carolina with a bachelor's degree in business. Vice president and treasurer of Marsden Slate Inc., he retired from Dick Slate Associates. He served on the board of directors for Crimestoppers, as a former member of the AMBUCS Club, and as a member of the High Point and Willow Creek country clubs, String and Splinter Club and Wake Forest Deacon Club. A member of Milford Hills Baptist Church and the Salisbury Moose Lodge, she worked at Parrish Bakery and was owner of Jay's Restaurant. She retired from Eddie's Deli. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Oulton Pinkham, and a daughter, Arlene Foster. Survivors include two sons, Charles L. Fellows and Clarence B. Born Jan. 28, 1922, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Marvin and Vera Lail Stroupe. She was a member of Bible Gospel Baptist Church in Connelly Springs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Hildebrand. Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Loren and Eva Etta Watts Setzer. He retired from Hickory Construction Company. He was preceded in death by two stepsons, James Avery Minton and Roger Sidney Minton; two brothers; and four sisters. Survivors include his wife, Lillie Adams Minton Setzer; a stepson, Kenneth Ray Minton of Hickory; a sister, Margie Setzer of Catawba; eight stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild. DEMAROY STREET Jr.
MAIDEN - Demaroy “JR” Street Jr., 56, of Balls Creek Road, Claremont, died June 4, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born March 5, 1945, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Demaroy and Estelle Canipe Street. A member of Center United Methodist Church, he was employed by Commscope for 19 years and a salesman for Electric Supply Co. A U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he received a Bronze metal. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Hubbard and Jane Street. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Street; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jody and Darla Street of Maiden and Dennis Street of the home; a brother, Bill Street of Valdese; two sisters, Lib Butler of Newton and Mary Alice Bumpas of Amarillo, Texas; and two grandchildren, Kole Street and Dylan Street. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Dave Cash and Nick Rochester at 6 p.m. Thursday at his church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LUCY W. PARKER
MAIDEN - Lucy Beatrice Weaver Parker, 83, of Buffalo Shoals Road, Newton, died June 5, 2001, at the Abernethy Retirement Center. Born Aug. 21, 1917, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Audie E. and Jessie Rebecca Moss Weaver. A member of East Maiden Baptist Church, she was a member of the choir and WMU. She retired from the textile industry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Pritchard “R.P.” Parker; four brothers, Ray Weaver, Howard Weaver, James Weaver and John Weaver; and a grandchild, Michelle Lynn Parker. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Peggy Parker of Maiden and Lanny and Judy Parker of Sherrills Ford; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ken Lineberger of Iron Station; a brother, Walter Weaver of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Alma Gaffney of Elkin, Katherine Fletcher of Lincolnton and Jean Menscer of Polkville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Nathaniel Austin and E.B. Elmore at 3 p.m. Thursday at her church. Burial will be in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery. MARGARET A. MORROW
MORGANTON - Margaret Alice Morrow, 81, of Morganton, died June 4, 2001, at Grace Hospital. Born Nov. 4, 1919, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Henry T. and Alice Phillips Morrow. An active member of the North Morganton Baptist Church, Lydia Sunday school class and Ladies Circle, she retired from the sales division of Lance Packing. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Morrow Jr. and James L. Morrow; and a sister, Blanche Gale. Survivors include a brother, Phil Morrow of Dyer, Ind.; four sisters, Ethel Kincade and Betty Calloway of Morganton, Myrtle Huss of Charlotte and Jo Baird of Lancaster, S.C.; and several nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Kenny Baker at 3:30 Thursday at Kirksey Funeral Home. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Thursday and at the residence of Linda Yoder, 1200 Watermill Road, at other times. STEVEN P. CLARK
CONOVER - Steven Prescott Clark, 49, of Creek Path Place, Linden, died June 1, 2001, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville. Born Oct. 12, 1951, in Stafford County, N.H., he was a son of Herbert Willis and Mona Euphrasia Lambert Clark of Rochester, N.H. He was the owner, operator and CEO of Freedom Painting. He was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Clark. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Owensby Clark; four sons, Christopher Clark of Newton, Justin Clark of Claremont and Steven Clark and Chad Owensby of Conover; a daughter, Chelsea Clark of Claremont; a brother, Richard Clark of Rochester, N.H.; a sister, Charlene C. Favreau of Linden; and a granddaughter. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Eller at 2 p.m. Thursday in Cherry Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Christopher Clark, Justin Clark, Chad Owensby, Jamie Senter, Wesley Rice, Mark Sexton, Mike Sexton and Robin Peck. The family will be at Drum Funeral Home from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

JOHN L. WHITENER
John Lewis Whitener, 85, formerly of Fourteenth Avenue, NW, died June 4, 2001, at Brian Center in Viewmont. Born March 27, 1916, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Theodore L. and Bertha Stevens Whitener. A member of First United Methodist Church in Hickory, he retired as a self-employed sales represenative at Hickory Mobile Homes Sales. He also was a member of Hickory Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Messick. Survivors include three sons, John David Whitener and Christopher Scott Whitener of Hickory and Richard Lewis Whitener of Peachtree City, Ga.; and a daughter, Elizabeth Jane Whitener Hale of Hickory. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Paul Starnes at 11 a.m. today in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C. 28658. LOUIS C. CUNNINGHAM
LINCOLNTON - Louis Charles Cunningham, 82, of Catawba Street, died June 1, 2001, at her residence. Born Sept. 22, 1918, in Bishopville, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John and Rebecca Holmes Charles. A member of Lovely Holy Temple Church, she retired as a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Willie Cunningham; five brothers, David Charles, Willie Charles, the Rev. James Charles, Cecil Charles and John Charles Jr.; and two sisters, Cleola C. Hush and Margaret Holmes. Survivors include a son, Aubrey Jean Cunningham of Gastonia; a daughter, Cynthia Mauney of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, Isaiah Charles of Washington, D.C., and Leroy Charles of Newark, N.J.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. The funeral will be conducted by Bishop O.B. Brintley at 2 p.m. Friday at her church. Burial will be in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will be at Ebony & White's Funeral Service from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
