Arthur “Art” Augustus Deal, 76, of Twenty-fourth Street Circle, NE, died Aug. 23, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 26, 1924, in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Percy E. and Hattie Ann Bowman Deal.
A member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church ELCA, he was a Sunday school teacher for more than 50 years. He retired as manager from Hickory International Furniture Company Inc. A member of Tuesday Morning Mens Group, he worked part time for Winn Dixie.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother; and a sister, Myrtle Austin.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dot Drum Deal; a son, Retired Lt. Col. Lewis Deal, USMC, of Stafford, Va.; a daughter, Jeane Cooke of Sylva; a brother, Davison Deal of Hickory; two sisters, Gilda Pennell of Conover and Linda Baker of Hickory; three grandsons, Jay Cooke and Jeffrey Cooke of Sylva and Forrest Deal of Stafford, Va.; two granddaughters, Jodie Cooke James of Waynesville and Kaitlan Deal of Stafford, Va.; a great-grandson, Hunter Cooke of Sylva; and a great-granddaughter, Katilan Pangle of Dillsboro.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Craig Saltzer and Pastor Alice Johnson Curl at 2 p.m. today at his church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Douglas Hefner, Jeffrey Cooke, Jay Cooke, Kevin Yount, Alan Pennell, Kevin Austin and Eric Deitz.

Born July 26, 1912, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Effie Jane Whisenant Chester.
She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Conley Saulmon; a son, Donald “Squeak” Saulmon; four brothers; and two sisters.

A member of St. John Baptist Church, she was a teacher in Alexander and Iredell counties, High Point, Cleveland, Ohio and Atlanta City, N.J.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kent Andre' Rowe.

Born Jan. 1, 1919, in Anderson, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Jessie and Sarah Hammond Williams.
A member of McElrath Chapel A.M.E. Church, she was a member of the Ladies Aide Club, stewardess board and a missionary. She retired from the housekeeping department at the North Carolina School For the Deaf after 25 years of service. She was a charter member of the Pride of the West No. 581 and the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Lytle; five brothers, Paris Williams, Artis Williams, Elias Williams, Bud Lee Williams and James Williams; and a sister, Mamie Lee Williams Ickard.
Survivors include a son, James Lytle of Morganton; three daughters, Dianne E. Gillette of Evanston, Ill., Linda Lytle-Allen and her husband, Fletcher Allen, of Alexandria, Va., and Dorothy Rene Lytle of the home; two sisters, Romel O. Beatty of Morganton and Beulah W. Born Jan. 30, 1920, in Pekin, she was a daughter of the late Clarence L. and Viola F. Preston Preston.
A member of First United Methodist Church in Las Vegas, Nev., she was a former member of First United Methodist Church, the Celestial City Chapter No. 333 of the Order of Eastern Star and Bethel No. 55 of Job's Daughters where she was past Honor Queen. She also was a former chairwoman of women's golf at the Park Ridge Country Club in Park Ridge. A homemaker, she was a beautician for a number of years.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Rowland Preston and Russell Preston.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon K. “Sharry” and Stephen Myers of Florissant, Mo.; two grandchildren, Stephen D. Myers of Saint Louis, Mo., and Wells of Florissant; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Wells and Tyler Wells; a nephew; and two nieces.

A member of Drexel First Baptist Church, he was a former school teacher and was employed by Drexel Furniture Company.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theatre and received a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Clasp, Bronze Battle Star of the Bougainville Campaign and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre ribbon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Franklin Sutton.
Survivors include two brothers, Wilton Sutton and Jack Sutton of La Grange; four sisters, Lorena Sutton, Grace Sutton and Thelma Sutton of La Grange and Lenora Yates of Winston-Salem; seven nephews; and 10 nieces.

SALISBURY - Joseph Frederick Comer Sr., 84, died Aug. 23, 2001, at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center.
Born April 20, 1917, in Dobson, he was a son of the late Walter S. and Mattie Woltz Comer.
A member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury, he served as a deacon and was a member of the men's adult Sunday school class. He retired as a veteran representative from the North Carolina Employment Commission where he received many awards for outstanding service.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theatre. He was also a member of the Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006 and the Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342. Before his illnes, he was an active member of the Salisbury Kiwanis Club, where he served on the board of directors from 1990 to 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Foreman Comer; a son, Joseph Frederick Comer Jr. of Hickory; two daughters, Anna Burns Comer Stidham and Catehrine Efird “Kitty” Comer of Raleigh; and four grandchildren.

She was a retired school counselor from the North Carolina School of the Death in Morganton.

Born March 27, 1921, in Alexander County, he was a son of the late Robert P. and Mae Elizabeth Barnette Childers.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he retired from Kewaunee Scientific Corporation in Statesville and was a former wheat rancher in Washington.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Comer Childers, Bard Childers and John Deal “J.D.” Childers.
Survivors include a sister, Gay Costner of Taylorsville; a special friend, Zettie Mitchell; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Born Dec. 16, 1911, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Roby and Rosa Deal Davidson.
A member of Mount Hebron Baptist Church, she was a homemaker and formerly employed by Holly Farms in Hiddenite.
She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Hubbard; an infant son, Felix Wayne Hubbard; four brothers; a sister; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

A member of Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, she retired as a teacher at Oakwood Elementary School of Hickory City Schools.
