CONOVER - Jimmy Wayne Lail, 38, of Riverbend Road, Claremont, died Sept. 8, 2001. Born July 6, 1963, he was a son of Shelby Jean McCrary Lail of Conover and the late Kenneth Wayne Lail. He was employed with Highland House Furniture. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Terry Lail and Kenneth Lail, and a sister, Cathy Jean Lail. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Lori M. Lail; a son, Justin Wayne Lail of Claremont; a stepdaughter, Heather Canipe of Claremont; a brother, Ricky Lail of Claremont; and two sisters, Diane Peterson of Claremont and Tammy Lail of Conover. MORGANTON - Lori Morrison Rayfield, 40, of Mount Olive Church Road, died Sept. 9, 2001, at Grace Hospital. Born Oct. 16, 1960, in Burke County, she was a daughter of Ben and Frances Duckworth Morrison of Morganton. A member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, she was a graduate of the nursing program at Western Piedmont Community College. She worked as a nurse at several nursing homes and was a volunteer nurse at the Good Samaritan Clinic. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Terry Rayfield; two daughters, Amanda of Morganton and Lindsay of the home; a sister, Gayle Morrison Rostan of Bethlehem; a grandson, Tyler; a grandmother, Irene Duckworth of Morganton; and two nephews and two nieces. The funeral will be conducted by Rev. Robert Ferguson at 11 a.m. Wednesday at her church. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GRANITE FALLS - Mattie Mask Miller, 86, of Pearl Street, died Sept. 10, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital. Born Dec. 10, 1914, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late James F. and Louisia Starnes Mask. A member of Concord Baptist Church, she retired from Shuford Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton R. Miller; a son, Michael Alan Miller; three brothers, John Clarence Mask, Fred Mask and Cecil Mask; and five sisters, Johnsie Winebarger, Cordie Freeman, Cora Bumgarner, Ethel Shephens and Hattie Johnson. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Norman J. and Carolyn Miller of Granite Falls; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tony Wilkie of Lincolnton; two grandsons, Richard Miller and Danny Miller of Granite Falls; a granddaughter, Christy Crouch of Lincolnton; and a great-grandson, Craig Alan Miller of Granite Falls. MAIDEN - Helen Williams Fish, 81, of Brian Center of Hickory, died Sept. 9, 2001, at Brian Center. Born July 13, 1920, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Will and Bertie Barrier Williams. A member of East Maiden Baptist Church, she retired as a textile employee with Parker Cone Company. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Villas. Survivors include her husband, Larry Fish; a son, Craig Fish of Charlotte; a daughter, Cathy Elliott of Statesville; a sister, Dorcas Harrill of Maiden; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Leslie. A member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Joseph Teles Miller, formerly of Hickory; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dr. Bruce and Pat Miller and Les and Margaret Miller of Gastonia, and Joseph Teles Miller III of San Francisco, Calif.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Robin Miller of Florence, S.C., and Suzanne and Capt. Kevin Albright of LeMoore, Calif.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, John R. VALDESE - James Joseph Romo, 77, of Forty-first Avenue Court, NE, Hickory, died Sept. 9, 2001, at Catawba County Hospice after a period of declining health. Born Sept. 11, 1923, in Hoboken, N.J., he was a son of the late James J. and Wilhelmina Christ Romo. He attended Tabernacle Baptist Church in Hickory and retired as a teamster with Navahoe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Nichols Romo. Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Rose Romo of Hickory; a nephew, Robert Romo of New Jersey; and three nieces, Jackie Tuzzio, Cathy Thorpe and Linda Hoff of New Jersey. Granvel and Carrie McLean Cloer of Hudson. He was employed with Barry Cloer Grading and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Wike Cloer. BENJAMIN F. MYNATT
CONCORD - Benjamin Franklin Mynatt, 69, died Sept. 9, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Born Feb. 10, 1932, in Morristown, Tenn., he was a son of the late Ewin G. and Martha Lee Tucker Mynatt. He owned Ben Mynatt Chevrolet, Cadillac, Oldsmobile Inc. and Ben Mynatt Pontiac, Buick, GMC Inc. He served on the board of directors of the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association and Carolina Chevy Dealers Advertising Association and on the dealer council of Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors Corporation. He served on many boards, including Concord Telephone Company, Cabarrus Concrete Company, Cabarrus County Boys and Girls Club, Cabarrus Credit Bureau, Cabarrus Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, Cabarrus County United Negro College Fund, United Way of the Carolinas, and the Greater Cabarrus Economic Development Council. Past chairman of the Concord Cabarrus County Chamber of Commerce, he was a Paul Harris member of the Concord Rotary Club, lifetime member of Optimist International, trustee of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and Wingate University, and member of the board of visitors of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was a member of the Davidson College Wildcat Club, UNC-C Athletic Foundation, Stokes Lodge No. 32 AF & AM, the Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur A. “Doc” Mynatt, and a brother-in-law, Donald B. Macdougall. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Grace Macdougall Mynatt; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard F. and Julie Waddell Mynatt; a daughter, Cynthia Lee Mynatt; brother and sister-in-law, William G. and Shirley H. LENOIR - Robert Carl Staats, 78, of Fox Winkler Road, died Sept. 10, 2001, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 11, 1923, in Kanawha County, W.Va., he was a son of the late Lloyd and Stacia Whittington Staats. He retired as a truck driver for Chemical Leahman Tank Lines and owned Small Beds Inc. of Delton, Fla. He was preceded in death by a son, James Staats; six brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Forbes Staats of Lenoir; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Staats of Charleston, W.Va., and Connie and Roger Followay of Lenoir; and two sisters, Esther Levinson of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Betty Reynolds of Newark, Del. BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Thelma M. Krause, 85, of Asheville, N.C., died Sept. 6, 2001, in Asheville, N.C. Born Aug. 27, 1916, in Hickory, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Emmitt M. and Mary Brown Smith. She was a collection manager. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Glenn W. Mayor and Jim R. and Carolyn Mayor; a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Rick Eilerts; a number of grandchildren and grandchildren-in-law, Terri Eilerts, Kelli and Tom Keller, Elizabeth and Gary Highfill, Cindy Eilerts, Dean and Raelisa Mayor, Terri and Steve Pippin, Jimmy Mayor, and Mark and Shelley Mayor; and 20 great-grandchildren. FLOYD W. FRY Sr.
Floyd William Fry Sr., 92, of Highland Avenue, NE, died Sept. 9, 2001, at the Lutheran Home's Hickory unit. Born July 26, 1909, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Hubert D. and Minnie Yount Fry Sr. A lifelong member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, ELCA, he taught Sunday school for more than 60 years. He retired as owner of Fry Floor Covering and served 20 years as a St. Stephens Volunteer Fireman and 30 years as treasurer of the Firemen's Relief Fund. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Evelyn Reed Fry; a son, Harold D. Fry; a brother, Hubert Dan Fry Jr.; and five sisters, Vernice F. Reed, Bonnie F. Propst, Ina F. Abernethy, Jewel F. Eidenmiller and Mildred F. Haupt. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Floyd W. and Jeannette Fry Jr. of Concord; a sister, Rubye F. Born Sept. 10, 1946, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late James P. and Magalene Baker Dula. A member of Dulatown Presbyterian Church, USA, he retired from 1450 Transportation Co. in personnel management. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served as a technical sergeant during the Vietnam War. He also was a member of the National Guard. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Dula, and a brother, Stanley Micheal Dula. Born Aug. 30, 1908, in West Frankfort, Ill., she was a daughter of the late Charles F. and Mae Henson Martin Sr. A member of First Church of God in Drexel, she was a member of the Mary and Martha class and the women of the Church of God. A teacher for 26 years in southern Illinois, she was third-grade teacher at Emerson School in Bloomington, Ill, for a number of years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Martin and Eugene Martin; and a sister, Evelyn Paulk. Survivors include two sisters, Margaret McCaw Deal of Valdese and Mildred Jones of Alton, Ill.; three nephews; and five nieces. Born Sept. 22, 1908, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Effie Harbison Kincaid. A member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church, she was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walton Kincaid; a brother, Alexander Kincaid; and a sister, Theresa K. Silver. Born Nov. 16, 1941, in Iredell County, he was a son of Carmen Morrow Holler of Statesville and the late Lawrence Houston Holler Jr. A member of New Bethany Baptist Church, he was employed by Wheeling Steel the Statesville branch of Pittsburgh Steel in West Virginia. He also was a maintenance supervisor with Mallard Creek Apartments. A member of Christ United Methodist Church, he retired from Drexel Heritage after 36 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Williams; four brothers, Neil Williams, James Willams, Willie Elbert Williams and Earl E. Williams; two sisters, Ruth Clark and Ozelle Oxford; and a grandson, Ronny Cornett. A fourth-year student at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, she was studying industrial engineering. A member of Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering Society, she was a former member of Alpha Omega Epsilon and Society of Women Engineers. She worked in the industrial engineering department with Alcatel. LENOIR - Betty Ann Medley Greer, 61, of McMillan Place, died Sept. 11, 2001, at her residence. Born July 31, 1940, in Ashe County, she was a daughter of the late William T. and Annie Shatley Medley. She was employed at the Shaire Center. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Claude Medley, Winford Medley and James Medley; and four sisters, Viola Medley, Josie Turnmire, Blanche Bowers and Edith Blackburn. Survivors include her husband, Earl David Greer; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Debra and Randy Barrier and Lisa and Shawn Williams of Lenoir, Theresa Greer of Woodbridge, Va., and Brittany Greer of the home; a sister, Shirley Calloway of North Wilkesboro; and eight grandchildren. ERNEST K. HEFNER Sr.
Ernest Kenneth Hefner Sr., 80, of Hickory, died Sept. 15, 2001, at his residence. Born May 14, 1921, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late John and Jennie Lael Hefner. He was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, where he served as a former treasurer and member of the men's club. A retired parts manager with Western Carolina Truck Center, where he had 15 years of service, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Hefner, Ira Hefner and Dewey Hefner; and a sister, Evelyn Craig. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Jones Hefner; a son, Ernest “Skip” Hefner Jr. of Conover; a daughter, Elizabeth Buchanan of Hickory; two brothers, Harold Hefner of Conover and D.C. Hefner of Granite Falls; two sisters, Cleo Killian of Conover and Alma Lee Isenhour of Hickory; a granddaughter, Ricci Hefner of Conover; a great-grandson, Cody Hefner Henderson of Conover; a great-granddaughter, Haley Adams of Hickory; and a number of nephews and nieces. The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. David Guelzow and Paul Fitzpatrick at 11 a.m. Monday at his church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. MORGANTON - Fred Garland Keaton, 82, of Polly Street, died Sept. 13, 2001, at Valdese General Hospital after a period of declining health. Born Dec. 10, 1918, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Walter and Fannie Moses Keaton. A member of North Morganton Baptist Church, he retired from Drexel Heritage Furnishings Company after 46 years of service. He was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Howard Keaton and Nellis Keaton. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Margaret Dale Keaton; a daughter, Jean Elizabeth Baker of Lilburn, Ga.; a brother, Lynn Keaton of Greensboro; a sister, Drucella Jackson of Morganton; two granddaughters, Beth Connors of Holiday, Fla., and Debbie Lopes of Lilburn, Ga.; and a great-grandson, David Krisphor Lopez of Lilburn, Ga. LENOIR - Cora Jeanette Mikeal, 65, of Kingtown Road, died Sept. 13, 2001, at Grace Hospital in Morganton. Born April 28, 1936, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late William C. and Ola Messer Franklin. A member of Flemings Chapel Baptist Church, she worked in the cabinet room at Broyhill Furniture. She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Franklin. Survivors include her husband, Ernest Ralph Mikeal; a son, William Bruce Franklin of Morganton; two daughters, Reba Jeanene Mikeal of Lenoir and Joetta Lynn church of Raleigh; two brothers, Carol Franklin and Johnny Franklin of Morganton; two sisters, Gladys Page of Hickory and Ellamae Dishman of Lenoir; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. CONOVER - Edith Aberdeen Jackson, 70, of Thirty-third Street, NE, Hickory, died Sept. 14, 2001, at her residence after a period of declining health. Born July 2, 1931, in Johnston County, she was a daughter of the late Albert and Betty Spivey Jackson. A member of New Life Baptist Church, she retired as a metal grinder with Newport News Ship Building in Newport News, Va. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda L. and Eric Briggs of Hickory; a sister, Betty H. Capps of Newport News, Va.; and a granddaughter, Kayla Briggs. FOUNTAIN INN, S.C. - Carl Bumgarner, 64, of Grandview Drive, Simpsonville, died Sept. 13, 2001, at his residence. He was a son of the late Carl D. and Fannie Mae Goodman Bumgarner. A Baptist, he was owner and president of Preferred Fire Protection Company. A member of the Fox Run Country Club, he served in the 101 Airborne with the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Bumgarner, Thomas Bumgarner and Fred Bumgarner; and two sisters, Betty Craft and Ruby Carstarphen. Survivors include his wife, Sarah McReynolds Bumgarner; a son, David T. Bumgarner of Simpsonville; a daughter, Kristi J. MORGANTON - Betty Pitts Beach, 73, of Herring Road, Goldsboro, died Sept. 13, 2001, after a period of declining health. Born April 4, 1928, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Alfred L. and Margaret Morrow Pitts. A retired cafeteria worker with Burke County Public Schools, she worked for a number of years as a nursery supervisor at Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Forest Wilson Rockett; two brothers, Robert Pitts of Morganton and Edward Pitts of Concord; and two sisters, Pauline Zepp of Baltimore, Md., and Rose Morrow of Valdese. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Beach of Morganton and Bruce and Sherry Rockett of Valdese; two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggy Beach of Raleigh and Susan and Dale Overman of Goldsboro; a sister, Frankie Giles of Morganton; a granddaughter, Caitlin Rockett of Valdese; and a number of nephews and nieces. A member of Taylorsville Church of God, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, she retired from Carolina Glove Mill. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William David Shook; her second husband, the Rev. Larry Kilby; a son, Clifford Shook; a daughter, Doris Shook Jolly; a step-daughter, Jane Kilby; three brothers, Jason Icenhour, Pleas Icenhour and James Icenhour; and a grandson, David Shook. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Jody Shook of Taylorsville; two stepsons, Joe Kilby and John Kilby; a daughter and son-in-law, Ruth S.and Gary Teague of Taylorsville; two stepdaughters, Remonda Kilby Williams and June Kilby; a brother, R.L.
