GEORGE T. CORNWELL
MORGANTON - George Thomas Cornwell, 95, of Morganton, died Oct. 29, 2000, at his residence.
Born March 3, 1905, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late George L. and Julia Gold Cornwell.
A member, life deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member and music department chairman of First Baptist Church in Morganton, he was a graduate of Mars Hill College and the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy.
He served as a member of the board of trustees at Mars Hill College for 25 years and, in 1973, had a classroom building named in his honor.
President and treasurer of Cornwell Drug Stores, he was a past member of the Consolidated Pharmacy Fund Committee of the N.C. Pharmaceutical Association. A trustee of the UNC School of Pharmacy, he established the Cornwell Scholarship to provide grants to state students attending the School of Pharmacy.
He was named the first Alexis de Torgueville Society Member by the Burke County United Way in 1999. A benefactor and founder of the Huffman-Cornwell Foundation, he served as its chairman for many years. He also served on Grace Hospital's board of trustees and established an endowment fund there for nursing scholarships.
He was a past president of Burke Freezer Locker Company and Burke County Merchants Association. He served on the Morganton City School Board and the Morganton Zoning Commission. He was on the board of directors at Drexel Enterprises, Wachovia Bank, Mimosa Hills Golf Club, Morganton Chamber of Commerce, Morganton Parks and Recreation Foundation and Morganton Kiwanis Club. He also served as vice president and director for the Burke County Fair Association for several years.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Mary Louise Huffman and Louise Elizabeth Grill; a daughter, Ann Cornwell Patton; five brothers, Dr. A.M. Cornwell, Lee W. Cornwell, A. Hal Cornwell, James F. Cornwell and Robert Cornwell; and seven sisters, Clemma Elmore, Mrs. Guy Hull, Mrs. Claude Stamey, Mrs. Claude Gettys, Mrs. Yates Horn, Margaret Mull and Mrs. Harvey Warlick.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Louise and J.H. McCombs Jr. and Barbara C. and Jerry Norvell of Morganton; 10 grandchildren, Mary Lou McCombs Hudspeth, James McCombs III, Tom McCombs, Julie McCombs Garner, Jan Norvell Stephanides, Lou Norvell Crouch, Jay Norvell, Brad Norvell, Richard Avery and Anna Avery-Leagan; two stepchildren and stepchildren-in-law, Renee G. and Jack Gravel and Charles A. and Peggy Grill; five stepgrandchildren, Jack Gravel, Katie Gravel, Bo Gravel, Troy Grill and Jake Grill; 17 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday in Forest Hill Cemetery.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Revs. Dr. Thomas Bland, Bob Shepherd and Caroline Grisette after the graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at his church.
The family will remain at the church after the services.

LENOIR - Myron Craig Smith, 78, of Kincaid Hill Road, died Oct. 28, 2000, at Caldwell County Hospice.
Born Oct. 14, 1922, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late Walter and Lulu Craig Smith.
A member of Central Baptist Church, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and he retired from Fairfield Chair Company.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Coolidge Smith and Wyatt Smith; and a half-sister, Mae Haas.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Haigler Smith; two daughters, Janice S. Lovins of the home and Sheila S. Church of Lenoir; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. John M. Jernigan at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

CONOVER - Irene Silver Dixon, 84, of the Abernethy Center, died Oct. 28, 2000, at the Abernethy Center.
Born June 7, 1916, in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late George A. and Mary Elizabeth Mashburn Silver.
A member of North Newton Baptist Church, she retired as an inspector from Ridgeview Hosiery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Graham Oates Dixon.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Lewis Hollar of Conover; three grandchildren and two grandchildren-in-law, Kellie and Doug Vinson, Martin and Alicia Hollar and Kirk Hollar; and three great-grandchildren, Megan Hollar, Grant Vinson and Noah Hollar.

Annie Laura Rhodes Sigmon, 81, of Hickory, died Oct. 28, 2000, at Catawba Valley Hospice House following a brief illness.
Born March 30, 1919, she was a daughter of the late John R. and Laura Harris Rhodes.
She was a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church in Hickory.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Francis Sigmon; two brothers, Howard Edward Rhodes and Eugene Harris Rhodes; and a granddaughter, Amy Beth Sigmon.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, C. MAIDEN - Albert Austin Hodge, 77, of Mays Chapel Church Road, Newton, died Oct. 29, 2000, at Hospice of Catawba Valley Home.
Born May 19, 1923, in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of the late John L. and Jenny Chandley Hodge.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was employed in the maintenance department of Glen Oaks Golf Course.
He was preceded in death by a half brother, James Hodge; a sister, Ruby Putman; and a half sister, Clara Scronce.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Lineberger Hodge; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Eugene Long of Newton, Delores “Dodie” and Floyd Hicks of Maiden and Darlene and Glen Stuart of Jefferson; a brother, Paul Hodge; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

LENOIR - Blanche Blevins Winkler, 63, of Grandin Road, died Oct. 28, 2000, at Caldwell County Hospice.
Born Dec. 8, 1936, in Ashe County, she was a daughter of Ruth Miller Blevins of Fleetwood, and the late Clinton L. Blevins.
A member of First United Methodist Church of Lenoir, she retired as a school teacher with Caldwell County Schools. A member of the Lenoir BPW, Caldwell Memorial Hospital volunteers and Caldwell County Retired School Personnel, she graduated from Appalachian State Teacher's College and acted as the “Weather Lady” for WJRI for many years.
She also served as a Red Cross board member, Caldwell Memorial Hospital Auxiliary member, Caldwell County Historical Society member and NCAE member, and she was active in the Community in Schools Program.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joe Blevins; and a sister, Maude Anne Blevins.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, R.H. Winkler; two daughters and a son-in-law, Ann Winkler of Granite Falls and Susan and Randy Mittelstaedt of Waterville, Wash.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Max Padgett of Hickory and Nell and Tom Baldwin of Fleetwood; and two grandsons, Miles Mittelstaedt and Derek Philyaw.

A member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, she was a homemaker and was a member of the Drowning Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Born June 28, 1914, in Whitmire, N.C., he was a son of the late Miner E. and Bessie Campbell Horne.
A member of First Baptist Church of Fort Mill, he was a member of Catawba Masonic Lodge 56 in Fort Mill. He served in the Maritime service during World War II, and was a member of American Legion Post 43.
He was a former owner and operator of Horne's Laundry and Cleaners in Fort Mill.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Harkey Horne.

TAYLORSVILLE - Mitchell Ray Bryant, 30, of River Shoals Drive, died Oct. 28, 2000, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.
Born Oct. 22, 1970, in Catawba County, he was a son of Penny Yount Davis of Granite Falls and the late Shea Bryant.
A member of Smyrna Baptist Church, where he was a member of the young adult Sunday school class, he was a sales representative with CommScope of Hickory. He also was the president of Blue Ridge Horseman Association and was a certified R.E.I.N.S. volunteer. He was a graduate of Kings College in Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lenoir and Irene Yount; and paternal grandfather, Dave Bryant Sr.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Kim Bostian Bryant; paternal grandmother, Dessie Dula Bryant of Granite Falls; and a number of uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.

Born Aug. 26, 1928, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late William C. and Magdalene Roberts Barlow.
A member of Lower Creek Baptist Church, he was self-employed and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Barlow; and a sister, Mildred Smith.

VALDESE - Earl Goins, 65, of Sugar Loaf Road, Connelly Springs, died Oct. 29, 2000, at his residence after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 3, 1935, in Burke County, he was a son of the late Zero I. and Pearl Fredell Goins.
He retired from the maintenance department of the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Goins; and a sister, Geneva Sigmon.

CHARLES H. LEACH
Charles Henry Leach, 84, of Hickory, died Oct. 29, 2000, at Brian Center in Viewmont.
Born Sept. 3, 1916, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late James L. and Bertha Sewell Leach.
A member of First United Methodist Church and its men's Bible class, he retired from Hickory Auto Parts as a salesman for the Lenoir area. A former member of a Moose Club, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, during which time he served in the Pacific Theater, flew PBMS as a flight engineer and gunner, and received two distinguished flying crosses and air medals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Parlier Leach; two brothers, John Luther Leach and Frank Sewell Leach; and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Leach and Nancy Leach Brown.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Ann Leach of Tinley, Ill., and Mary Susan Leach of Hickory; and a number of nephews and nieces.

LENOIR - Indiana Isabella Gragg, 96, of Foothills Drive, died Oct. 29, 2000, at her residence.
Born Feb. 23, 1904, in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Larkin and Lee Ella Gragg Henderson.
A Baptist, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt Gragg; four sons, Russell “Ted” Gragg, Robert Gragg, Rule Gragg and Shirley Gragg; and two daughters, Judy Gragg and Rosaline Gragg.
Survivors include a son, Ashburn Ashley Gragg of Pineola; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kathleen and the Rev. Max Greene and Christine Coffey of Lenoir and Justine and Obie Gragg of Collettsville; 25 grandchildren; 58 great- grandchildren; and 46 great-great- grandchildren.

Burial will be in the Gragg Family Cemetery at Grandfather Mountain.

RACHEL F. FRAZIER
MORGANTON - Rachel Flack Frazier, 87, of Tenth Street, NE, Hildebran, died Oct. 27, 2000, at Cambridge House in Hildebran after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 31, 1913, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Max and Bessie Avery Flack.
Retired as a domestic worker, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Frazier; a brother, Charles Flack; and two sisters, Hattie F. Toppin and Amelia F. Evans.
Survivors include a son, Robert Flack of Salisbury; a sister, Delia F. Lewis of Morganton; four nephews and three nieces-in-law, Carl and Hazel Evans, Daniel and Paronia Evans Sr. and Bill Lewis of Morganton and James and Rachel Lewis of Thomasville; two nieces and a nephew-in-law, Maxine and Forney Happoldt Sr. and Jean L. Brown of Morganton; and a number of great- nephews, great-nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
A graveside service was held Monday in Olive Hill Cemetery.

MORGANTON - Lucy May Chapman Waldrop, 91, of Blanton Road, died Oct. 29, 2000, at Autumn Care in Drexel after a period of declining health.
Born Oct. 9, 1909, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late William L. and Caroline Carswell Chapman.
A member of Mountain Home Baptist Church, she was a former employee of Broughton Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hershel Waldrop; a son, Robert J. Waldrop; a son-in- law, Bennie H. McNeely; two brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Edwin H. and Helen Waldrop of Morganton; a daughter, Margaret McNeely of Statesville; seven grandchildren, Faye W. Powell, Edwin H. Waldrop Jr., Vicky Adkins, Deborah Guibault, Donna Lancy, Ronald McNeely and Joseph McNeely; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Jerry Gamble at 2 p.m. Wednesday at her church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

George Walter “Walt” Lingerfelt, 65, of Hickory, died Oct. 30, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born April 23, 1935, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Grady F. and Lorene Hattie Kiser Lingerfelt.
He was formerly employed by Jack Sipe Construction of Hickory.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Sue Hefner Lingerfelt; four sons, Walter Randall “Randy” Lingerfelt, Doyle Hefner and Jimmy Scott Hefner of Hickory and Richard Mirtsching of Vale; three daughters, Tina Mirtsching of Hickory, Sandy Powell of Hildebran and April Hall of Statesville; five brothers, J.D. Lingerfelt, Scotty Lingerfelt, Floyd Lingerfelt Sr. and Raeford Lingerfelt of Vale and Bobby Lingerfelt of Hickory; two sisters, LouElla Craig of Vale and Linda Mull of Claremont; and 13 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Catawba Funeral Home.

LENOIR - Blanche Coffey McGee, 90, of Lenoir, died Oct. 30, 2000, at Gateway Nursing Home.
Born March 7, 1910, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of the late Finley and Effie Turnmire Coffey.
A member of Antioch Baptist Church in Burke County, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. McGee; two brothers, Lloyd Coffey and Cloyd Coffey; and a sister, Coline Coffey.
Survivors include four brothers, Clyde F. Coffey, Vilas L. Coffey, Ernest E. Coffey and Hal Coffey of Lenoir; and two sisters, Irene Hartley and Lois Coffey of Lenoir.
A graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Brady Adkins at 2 p.m. today in her church cemetery.

PALM HARBOR, Fla. - Donald L. Hamacher, 62, of St. Petersburg, died Oct. 23, 2000.
Born in Ohio, he was a Methodist who was a truck driver and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hamacher; a son, Christopher Hamacher of Montana; three daughters, Terri Hamacher, Laura Hamacher and Holly Hamacher of Washington; a stepmother, Roseanne Hamacher of Washington; two brothers, Wayne Hamacher of Hickory and Gary Hamacher of Washington; two sisters, Donna York of West Covina, Calif., and Carol Harger of Everett, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. today at Abbey Parklawn Funeral Home.
Burial will be Wednesday in Parklawn Memory Gardens.

NEWTON - Clyde Oliver McGee, 88, of North Spring Avenue, died Nov. 1, 2000, at Hospice House.
Born July 10, 1912, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Oliver D. and Hattie Elizabeth Witherspoon McGee.
A member of First Baptist Church, he was a former deacon, Sunday school teacher and usher. A member of Newton Lions Club, he retired as a supervisor from Century Furniture in Hickory.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe McGee and Lee McGee; and a sister, Catherine McGee Houser.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Edna Robinson McGee; a son and daughter-in-law, John O. and Barbara V. McGee of Newton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Elizabeth “Betsy” McGee of Asheboro and Diane M. and John B. Byrd of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Noah McGee of Conover and Mervin McGee of Newton; six grandchildren, John Eric Gray of Level Cross, Christopher Robinson Gray of Blacksburg, Va., John Patrick McGee of Greenville, Martin Vaughn McGee of Newton, Parks Robinson Byrd of Raleigh and Raleigh Craig Byrd of Clearwater, Fla.; two great-granddaughters, Julia Ann Louhoff and Alexandra Elizabeth Gray of Blacksburg, Va.

Born Dec. 11, 1900, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Lida Walker Johnston Lore.
A lifelong member of Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, she was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Halycion Bridge Club, Fortnight Bridge Club, Executives Club and the Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Schrum; a daughter, Bess Lore Schrum; four brothers, Rob Z. Lore, James V. Lore, Joseph C. Lore and David G. Lore; and four sisters, Mrs. Kent Turbyfill, Mrs. Hugh Williams, Mrs. Kenneth Spicer and Mrs. Fred Hartness.
Survivors include two sons, Ed Schrum of Newton and Frank Schrum of Kingsport, Tenn.; and a daughter, Dorothy “Dot” Hamond of Newton.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. David Bowling at 3:30 p.m. Friday at her church.

A member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, he was a brick machine operator and he served in the U.S. Army.

A member of New Bethel Baptist Church, he retired as co-owner of Price and Huss Masonry and Construction after 45 years of service.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, J.P. Price and Paul Price; and two sisters, Edna Price and Virginia Price.
