Cecil Milton Deal, 79, of Fifteenth Street Drive, NE, died Nov. 5, 2000.
Born July 31, 1921, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Thomas P. and Destimona Price Deal.
A member of Highland United Methodist Church, where he was a choir member and Sunday school teacher, he was employed by Drexel Heritage Furniture as a wood worker. A graduate of Clevenger College, he was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and institutional representative of Boy Scouts of America.
He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Coast Guard and earned American Defense Service Medal Bronze Service Star, American Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and an Eamet Campaign Medal with two Bronze Service Stars.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esmer Hudson Deal; four brothers, Carl Deal, Alvin Deal, Solon Deal and Arnold Deal; and a sister, Elaine Crowell.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Lt. Col. Gene M. and Diane H. Deal of Winston-Salem and Ray L. and Claudia M. Deal of Hickory; a half brother, Robert Deihl of Raleigh; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Andrea D. and Robert J. Duggins of Winston-Salem; and a stepgrandson, Chris McGee of Newton.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Jim Church at 1 p.m. today at his church.
The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Betty Jean Herman, 65, of San Diego, Calif., died Nov. 2, 2000, in Escondido, Calif.
Born June 19, 1935, in Calhoun, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Chester and Linnie Simpson McAlister.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Claude McAlister; and a sister, Clara Swafford.

Fred Long Waters, 80, of Hickory, died Nov. 5, 2000, at Pell Care Nursing Facility.
Born Oct. 8, 1920, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Cora Waters Bowman.
A member of Central Baptist Church, he retired as sales manager of Rhades & Beal Oil Company.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ferguson Waters.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Danny L. and Thelma C. Waters of Conover; a daughter, Sandra A. Waters of Newton; six brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; a grandson, Bryan T. NEWTON - Mary Margaret Rhyne, 93, of the Abernethy Center, died Nov. 6, 2000, at the Abernethy Center.
Born Aug. 21, 1907, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Robertus G. and Mary Craig Rhyne.
A member of St. James Lutheran Church, where she had taught Sunday school and served on the church council, she retired as an elementary school teacher. She also was a graduate of Mount Holly High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College, and was a member of The Thursday's Book Club.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Robertus Rhyne and Henry Andrew Rhyne; a sister, Katherine Kohn Rhyne; two half brothers, Willie Efird Rhyne and Greer Kendall Rhyne; and a half sister, Edna Rhyne.
Survivors include a sister, Betty R. McComb of Hickory; a sister-in-law, Mary H. Rhyne of Albermarle; a number of nephews and nieces; and a number of great-nephews and great-nieces.

A member of Union Chapel Baptist Church, she was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Ellis; four brothers, Lee Keller, Jackson Keller, George Keller and Clinard Keller; four sisters, Annie Wooten, Cecil Reeves, Alice Richardson and Ethel Keller; and a great-granddaughter, Susan Estes.

He worked in the furniture manufacturing industry and served in the U.S. Air Force.

Born Dec. 6, 1955, in Burke County, he was a son of Sam and Jean Clay Rudicill of Morganton.
A member of First Baptist Church in Morganton, he was a member of the Serendipity Sunday school class.

Born Aug. 25, 1934, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Merlin L. and Bertha Berry Aiken.
A member of Welcome Chapel Baptist Church, she was the bookkeeper for Wilson Home Remodeling. Active in the North Carolina Women’s Bowling Association (N.C.W.B.A.), she served as an officer or director on the board of N.C. Women’s Bowling Association for 20 years and was a member of 40 years. A young bowlers’ instructor, she was honored as a lifetime member.
Survivors include her husband, Clifton “Bill” Wilson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ernest L. and Susan Wilson of Hickory and Berlin G. and Laura Wilson of Charlotte; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa W. and James Hartzoge of Maiden; a brother, Billy L. He was a son of the late Frank and Grace Carpenter Bolton.
A U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, he retired from Federal Express after 24 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Bolton; two brothers, Wayne Bolton and Stan Bolton of Newton, N.C.; and a sister, Lottie Beyer of Fairbanks, Alaska.

MORGANTON — Nell James Elmore, 82, of Lenoir Road, died Nov. 7, 2000, at Brian Center East in Hickory.
Born Jan. 20, 1918, in Burke County, she was a daughter of the late Walter A. and Elizabeth Hood James.
A member of First Presbyterian Church, she taught the ladies adult Sunday school.
A retired school teacher, she taught first grade in Morganton for more than 20 years.
An active member of the Burke County Chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederate, she was a key contributor to the Burke County Historical Record and a supporter of the ASPCA and Burke County Friends of Animals.
Survivors include her husband, William Elmore; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Louis W. and Patty James of Morganton; a foster brother, Lewis Ross of Drexel; and a grandson, Louis Walter-William James II.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he retired as a mechanic and worked at Winn-Dixie in Hildebran.

CONOVER — Merlie Jane Griggs, 57, of Utica, Ohio, died Oct. 23, 2000.
She was a daughter of Zelphia Hughey Minnich of Utica, Ohio, and A.C. Griggs of the Balls Creek community.
A member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Granville, Ohio, she retired as a teacher from the North Folk School System in Ohio after 24 years of service. She also was the author of a published children’s book.

A member of Three Forks Baptist Church, he retired from Schneider Mills in 1996 and he was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dallas Kerley and Dillard Kerley; and five sisters, Doris Odom, Delma Deal, Dolah Patricia Stout, Delores Lafone and an infant sister; a grandson, Michael Gregory Kerley.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Nell Moose Kerley; a son, David Michael Kerley of Taylorsville; a sister, Dora White of Elizabethton, Tenn.; a grandson, James Matthew Kerley of Winston-Salem; and a number of nephews and nieces.

ANITA L. WILSON
MORGANTON — Anita Loftin Wilson, 83, died Nov. 7, 2000, at Grace Ridge Health Care after a period of declining health.
Born May 27, 1917, in Palmetto, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Charles C. and Lois Howe Smith.
A member of First United Methodist Church of Morganton, she attended Davenport College and Mitchell Junior College.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Smith and Jack Smith.
Survivors include her husband, Harry L. Wilson Jr.; four daughters and a son-in-law, Gayle Loftin Butler of Morganton, Susan Wilson Simpson of Wilson, Carol L. and Don Sayers of Salisbury and Cookie Wilson Irvin of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Caroline Butler, Hank Butler and Ayden Butler of Morganton, Holly Sayers Hartzog of Raleigh, Elizabeth Riggs Pace of Indonesia, Wilson Riggs of Auburn, Ala., Kelly Sayers of Charlotte and Julie Simpson of Chicago, Ill.; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at her church.
Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will remain at the church after the service.

FLORENCE T. MULL
MORGANTON — Florence Tallent Mull, 87, of Autumn Care of Drexel, died Nov. 7, 2000, at Autumn Care after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 16, 1913, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Junnie Miller Tallent.
A member of Brookwood Baptist Church, she served as the church clerk, secretary and trustee and was a member of the finance committee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Russell Mull Sr.; a son, William Russell Mull Jr.; four brothers, Charles Tallent, James Tallent, Ralph Tallent and Forrest Tallent; and two sisters, Mae Sain and Minnie Lineberger. Survivors include a daughter, Rachel Mull Lunday of Matthews; a brother, Sam Tallent of Lawndale; three sisters, Edna Tallent of Charlotte, Helen Tallent of Hickory and Betty Mosteller of Drexel; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Earl Cross and Deacon Warren Bailey at 11 a.m. Friday at Sossoman Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.
RALPH E. LUTZ
Ralph Eugene Lutz, 93, of Robinson Road, Newton, died Nov. 7, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1906, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Jacob O. and Essie Propst Lutz.
A member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, he was self-employed in the trucking business.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Lutz; a daughter, Jean L. Rudisill; and two brothers, Carl Lutz and Harold Lutz.
Survivors include a daughter, Joy Lutz Brittain of Newton; three brothers, Charles Lutz and J.B. Lutz of Newton and Richard Lutz of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Violet Hollar and Dorothy Sigmon of Newton; two grandsons; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; and three great-granddaughters.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Randall Cauble at 11 a.m. Friday at his church.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Bass-Smith Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.

DAVID E. CROUSE
LINCOLNTON — David Ersmus Crouse, 75, of King Wilkinson Road, Denver, died Nov. 7, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born April 9, 1925, in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Charlie and Emily West Crouse.
A member of Amity Baptist Church, he was a musician.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Bridges Crouse.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Crouse and Richard Crouse of Denver; three daughters, Dianne C. Heffner of Gastonia and Debbie C. Lewis and Cheryl C. Barker of Denver; a sister, Allie Crouse Varner of Stanley; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted by the Revs. Larry Little, Jan Heermans and Robert Wensil at 2 p.m. Friday at his church.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Warlick Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight.
