James Edward Huffman, 52, of Surfside Beach, S.C., died Dec. 29, 2000, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C., after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 19, 1948, in Morganton, he was a son of Annie Vanhorn Huffman of George Hildebran and the late Daniel A. Huffman.
A member of Mount Hebron Lutheran Church in Hildebran, he was a former traffic manager at Impact Furniture in Hildebran and he previously owned and operated Jump Transportation in Hildebran. In Myrtle Beach, S.C., he had worked as a terminal manager with Frederickson Transportation Company and was employed by Canteen Service.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Edward Huffman Jr.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Patricia Noel Landis Huffman; three daughters, Apriale H. Clark of Connelly Springs, Kelly H. Hamby of Denver, Colo., and Sharon Clark Huffman of Hildebran; two brothers, Clarence Vanhorn and Daniel Huffman of Hildebran; three sisters, Shirley Bumgarner of George Hildebran, Gladys “Kay” Mosteller of Lenoir and Betty Lowman of Drexel; nine grandchildren, Joshua L. James, Abbie K. James, Patrick R. Clark, Jessica Martin, Cory Martin, Cody Martin, Heather Hamby, Kristen Hamby and Spencer D. Huffman; and a number of nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be conducted by Pastor Gary Coble at 2 p.m. today at his church.
Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park.

Perry L. Cole Sr., 86, of Warlick Church Road, Connelly Springs, died Dec. 30, 2000, at Oteen Veteran's Affairs Hospital in Asheville.
Born April 14, 1914, in Avery County, he was a son of the late David A. and Irene Buchanan Cole.
A member of Warlicks Baptist Church, he retired from Shuford Mills as a fixer. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater and was awarded an American Defense Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and a Philippine Liberation Ribbon Good Conduct Medal.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Cole, Lonnie Cole and John Cole; a twin sister, Mary Bell Parker; and three grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Lippard Cole; three sons, Robert Cole of Granite Falls, Ronnie Cole of Hildebran and Perry Cole Jr. of Gastonia; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Phyllis McAlister and Susie and Henry Jenkins of Gastonia, Doris and Andy Bradley of Shelby and Sindy and Mohammed Al-Melhem of Kuwait; a stepson, Johnny “Buck” Lynn of Hickory; a stepdaughter, Bobbie Lynn and Johnnie Reece of Connelly Springs; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice and Clinton Dockery of Marion and Martha Willis of Venice, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 13 stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

He retired as a carpenter from Drexel Heritage Furniture.
Survivors include four brothers, Louie Wright of Taylorsville, Earl Wright of Claremont, Clyde Huffman of Bethlehem and Donald Huffman of Hickory; and three sisters, Pearl McKinney of Conover, Evelyn Gantt of Hickory and Linda Abernathy of Morganton.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Richard Yaussy at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Conover.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Steele Leonard.

A member of Parkway Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, she was an assistant manager at the 321 Texaco and she formerly worked for Sharpe Motor Lines.She was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and Mitchell College.

ADRIAN L. SHUFORD Jr.
CONOVER - Adrian Lafayette Shuford Jr., 90, died Dec. 30, 2000, at Abernethy Center in Newton after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 23, 1910, in Hickory, he was a son of the late Adrian L. and Annie Warlick Shuford.
A member of Trinity United Church of Christ, he served on all the church's boards and committees. He also was superintendent of the church school and served as an elder for many years. A former mayor of Conover, he was a member of the Catawba County Board of Commissioners and was elected to the board of trustees in 1944. He served as secretary of the board of trustees and served as its chairman for 26 years.
A trustee emeritus, Catawba College honored him with a doctorate of humanitarian services for his outstanding leadership. The performing arts center on the campus was named for him and his wife.
A state Senator, he served two terms and was chairman of the committee on higher education. He also helped with the expansion of the University of North Carolina system.
He was honored in September 1999 by the city of Conover with the establishment of the Adrian L. Shuford Jr. Conover Citizenship Award for recognition of extraordinary citizenship. He was cited for his business career in the community for the manufacturing of socks and gloves and in banking.
He was the founder of the YMCA of Catawba Valley and was the first president of the local YMCA. He served as president of Conover Knitting Mill and secretary of Warlong Glove Company. Chairman of the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers, he also was director of Riegel Textile Corporation and the Southern Hosiery Manufacturers Association.
President of Shuford National Bank, he was director of First National Bank of Catawba County, which merged with First Union.
A lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He established Jackson Buff Corporation in 1959. The first president of Newton-Conover Rotary Club, he also served as president of the Blowing Rock Country Club and was the second president of the former Eastern Catawba County United Way. He was a member of the board of trustees of Catawba County Library.
The security and director's offices at the Salvation Army campus in Hickory were named in honor of him as a result of a gift made in his honor to the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter Capital Campaign.
A supporter of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he served on the development board and was active in fund-raising roles. A supporter of Catawba Valley Community College and the performing arts, he served on the board of the Western Piedmont Symphony. He also was Catawba County's fundraiser for the North Carolina School of the Arts and for North Carolina Public Television.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Cilley Shuford.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Lewis-Griffith Shuford; a son, Adrian L. Shuford III of Newton; a daughter, Dorothy Anna Shuford of Newton; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Griffith of Banner Elk; a brother, Dr. Wade Henry Shuford of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Betty Shuford Yount of Winston-Salem, Mary Shuford Palmer of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Annie Shuford McBride of Laurinburg; and two stepgrandchildren, Cole Curtis and Locke Curtis.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Revs. Carroll Bartholomew and Kenneth Clapp at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Church of Christ in Conover.
A private burial was held Monday in Conover City Cemetery.
The family will be at his residence, 609 First Avenue Place, NE, Conover, from 5 to 7 tonight.

LENOIR - Jara Oxford Smith, 62, of Union Baptist Road, died Dec. 30, 2000, at his residence.
Born Feb. 23, 1938, in Guilford County, he was a son of Vera Oxford Smith of Lenoir and Clarence Lee Smith.
A member of Union Baptist Church, he retired as a self-employed mechanic.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Stuart Bryson Smith.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two sons, Gregory Oxford Smith of the home and Todd Eric Smith of Lenoir; and a granddaughter, Kayla Marie Smith of the home.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Scott Thomas and Dr. David Boan at 2 p.m. today at his church.

CONOVER - Rita Ann Abernethy Killian, 58, of Thomasville Road, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 4, 1942, in Catawba County, she was a daughter of the late Bryant J. “B.J.” Abernethy and Jewel Robinson Kleinhenz.
A choir member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church in Conover, she served as the church's librarian for a number of years. A former member of the Hickory Choral Society, she was employed by Southwood Reproductions for 24 years.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Louise W. Abernethy.
Survivors include her husband, Leroy Killian; a son, Bryant Killian of Granite Falls; two daughters, Samantha Killian Duckett of Hudson and Annette Killian Medlin of Catawba; a brother, Reggie C. Abernethy of Hildebran; a stepmother, Reba Abernethy of Hildebran; a half brother, Rusty Lindsay of Morganton; three half sisters, Angie Harless of Charleston, W.Va., Jeanie Duncan of Newton and Kathy Lee of Taylorsville; three grandchildren, Tabitha Duckett, Michael Duckett and Austin Medlin; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Angela Blackwood Keller, 28, of Lacy Road, Granite Falls, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 9, 1972, in Atlanta, Ga., she was a daughter of Ray Blackwood of Bethlehem and the late Bonnie Melton Blackwood.
A member of Temple Hill Baptist Church in Dudley Shoals, she was a homemaker.

James Roy Seitz, 85, of Hickory, died Jan. 2, 2001, at Brian Center in Viewmont.
Born April 21, 1915, in Catawba County, he was a son of the late Herbert L. and Jennie Ward Seitz.
A member of Zion Lutheran Church, he retired from Joan Fabrics. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 48.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Naomi Morrison Seitz; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Ina Bowman Hefner, 87, of Bethlehem, died Jan. 2, 2001, at her residence.
Born April 10, 1913, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Espie White Bowman.
A member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, she was a former Sunday school teacher and was active in the church Senior Citizens Club. Retired from Alexander County School System, she worked in food services.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam E. Hefner; a son, Maynard Hefner; a brother, Earl Bowman Jr.; three sisters, Irene Bolick, Leona Bowman and Edna Reid; and two grandsons, Michael Hefner and Stanley Hefner.

A member of First Baptist Church, she was the church librarian. A member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, she retired as the church secretary from Hudson United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dewey Reid; a son, Van Lee Reid; four brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include a son, Hight D. Reid of Lenoir; a sister, Virginia Lashmit of Lenoir; and three grandchildren.

Born Feb. 16, 1934, in Caldwell County, he was a son of the late John R. and Frankie Clark Curtis.
A member of Confidence Advent Christian Church, he was the owner of Curtis Automotive for 43 years. A race car owner and builder, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry M. Curtis and John M. Curtis of Connelly Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon C. and Ken Poarch of Wilkesboro; three brothers, George C. Curtis, Norman E.
