Jack Barnett, 66
Jack Barnett, 66, of Hendersonville, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 4, 2002. He was born in Mills River, the son of the late Allen and Irene Barnett. He was a graduate of the former Mills River High School and Western Carolina University. He served four years with the Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Susan; two sons, Greg Barnett and his wife, Kim, of Charlotte and Mike Barnett and his wife, Cheryl, of Mills River; two granddaughters, Brittyn and Sarah Ashley Barnett, both of Charlotte; a grandson, Hunter Barnett of Mills River; two brothers, Jim Barnett of Mills River and Joe Barnett of Mountain Home; two sisters, Shirley Dockery and Mary Ashe of Hendersonville and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mills River Presbyterian Church where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. A graveside ceremony will immediately follow in the church cemetery. George E. Jorda, 77
George Edward Jorda, 77, of Knoxville, Tenn., and formerly of Hendersonville and New Jersey, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. He was a radar technician in the Marine Corps in the Pacific, during World War II. He served 28 years in the Newark, N.J., fire department and was promoted to captain. He received seven commendations for heroic measures. He retired in 1977. He then resumed his education and achieved a degree in nursing and worked in this field as director of cardiac services for the Northern Ocean Hospital System, including Pointe Pleasant Hospital and Brick Township Hospital in Ocean County, N.J. He was a dedicated volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He also served as a docent for the Historic Johnson Farm of Henderson County. He was a member of West Emory Presbyterian Church, West Knoxville Civitan Club and the Marine Corps League. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Betty Huddleson-Jorda. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, grandchildren and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at West Emory Presbyterian Church on Westland Drive. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Gates. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall. Dorothy S. Massey, 87
Dorothy Southard Massey “Dot,” 87, of Southport, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at her home in the Shipwatch Villas of St. James Plantation. She was born on April 6, 1914, in Marysville, Ohio. She was the youngest of the five children of Burleigh and Minnie May Turner Southard. She completed Maryville High School and attended Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. She met and married William G. Massey Jr. and spent 62 wonderful years with him, living in Akron, Ohio, Larchmont, N.Y., and Hendersonville. She raised two sons, Bill and Tom, and lived a very full life. She is survived by two sons, William G. Massey III and his wife, Gail, of Portland, Ore., and Thomas S. Massey and his wife, Susan, of St. James Plantation, Southport; five grandchildren, Lisa, Colleen, Jennifer, Kim and Chris; a great-grandchild, Regan, and two sisters, Martha Asman of Marsyville, Ohio and Mary Huffman of North Palm Beach, Fla. A private family service will be held at a later date. Brunswick Funeral Service and Crematory, Shallotte, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jennie E.C. Perkins, 98
Jennie Elizabeth Cross Perkins, 98, of Hendersonville, died on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Lake Pointe Landing Retirement Community. She was born Aug. 23, 1903, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, the daughter of the late William Webb Cross and Olive A. Fralick Cross. She attended Bridgton High School in Maine and graduated from the University of Maine at Farmington in 1925. She taught in the Maine school system for several years before her marriage to the late George Stanley Perkins. They lived in Lexington, Mass., for many years before moving to Hendersonville in 1972. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lois Clay Perkins; a son, Charles W. Perkins; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Clyde Richardson; a daughter, Ollie A. Fortier; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Marion K. Phillips, 91
Marion Karr Phillips, 91, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Pardee Care Center following a period of declining health. She was a native of Watertown, N.Y. She was a daughter of the late Ernest Karr and Lucy May Halladay Karr and was the wife of the late Roscoe Steele Phillips, who died in December. She attended Wellesley College and graduated from Simmons College in Boston with a bachelor’s degree in secretarial science. Following her graduation, she was the secretary to the superintendent of schools in Hudson, N.Y., for many years. While there she met and married her husband, who was then the director of music in the Hudson Public Schools. Later she served as a secretary to the mental health department of the Rip Van Winkle Clinic in Hudson. While a resident of Babylon, N.Y., she was the financial secretary of the Babylon United Methodist Church for 10 years and was a volunteer for several charitable organizations. She retired with her husband in 1972 to Hendersonville where she continued volunteering with the Red Cross and with Pardee Hospital. She was a member of the Hendersonville First United Methodist Church and the Women’s Society where she served in Group 3. Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Wilkerson of Hendersonville and Deborah Esposito of Rocky Point, N.Y., and three grandchildren, Samantha Wilkerson of Hendersonville, and Mark and Sarah Esposito of Rocky Point. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shepherd Memorial Park by the Rev. Ed Briggs. Carl R. Nelson, 91
Carl R. Nelson, 91, of Hendersonville, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Park Ridge Hospital following a period of declining health. He was born in Grand Traverse County, Mich., and was the son of the late Hewitt Kent Nelson and Lalu Grace Kidder Nelson. He was a member of the Arden Seventh-day Adventist Church. Prior to moving to Hendersonville eight years ago, he had lived in Greenville, S.C., for several years. He retired after 25 years as a metallurgist with Precision Heat Treating Company in Kalamazoo, Mich. In addition to his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy Crowell Nelson, he is survived by two daughters, Nita Wise and her husband, Darrell, of Hendersonville, Arlene Peterson and her husband, Elton, of Goldbar, Wash.; one brother, Clyde Nelson, of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today in the Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Uffindell officiating. Donald L. Walker, 71
Donald L. Walker, 71, of Hendersonville, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Pardee Hospital. A native of Saxonburg, Pa., he had lived in Greenville, Pa., and Chicago, Ill., before moving to Henderson County in 1992. He was the husband of the late Marilyn J. Walker, who died in 1997. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lorretta Lenkler. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a member of the Widowed Persons Service. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. Biskup; two brothers, LeRoy F. Walker of Niles, Ohio and the Rev. James E. Walker of Rochester, Minn.; nine step-children and 19 step-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Angels chapel at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park. Delia A. Camp
Delia A. Camp, a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in her home from a sudden illness. She was a daughter of the late Ernest F. Bayne and Delia Ward Bayne and the wife of William Hoyt Camp, who died in 1996. She lived most of her life in Henderson County. She was also preceded in death by her son, Leon Camp, who died in 1997. She was associated with the Green River and J.P. Stevens Mill, retiring in 1981 with 40 years of service. She was a member of Mountain Valley Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Donivie Barnett of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Vera Wise of Zirconia; two sisters, Ida Mae Fowler of Pickens, S.C., and Jewell Bayne of Travelers Rest, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Lloyd G. Edney, 86
Lloyd Glenn Edney, 86, of Apple Valley Road, Edneyville, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in his home following a period of declining health. He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, a son of the late William Creighton Edney and Lilly Maxwell Edney. He was preceded in death by nine brothers, John, Ovid, Plato, Clarence, Fred, Claude, Walter, Otto and Arthur; four sisters, Annie Edney, Gertie Edney, Della Edney Suttles and Daisy Edney Lyda; his stepmother, Ruth Wall Edney; and two stepbrothers, Bobby Wall and Woodrow Wall. He was a retired apple grower and farmer. He was a retired member of the Blue Ridge Apple Growers’ Association. He attended Anderson Chapel Church of God. He was a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved and highly respected. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Delane Freeman Edney; a son, Hal Edney and his wife, Frances Young Edney, of Edneyville; a daughter, Frances Edney Hoots and her husband, Ervin Hoots, of Edneyville; a grandson, Brently Edney and his wife, June Jackson Edney, of Edneyville; a granddaughter, Lori Edney Gonce and her husband, Douglas Gonce, of Edneyville; two great-grandsons, Kyle Gonce and Austin Edney; nine nieces; four nephews; and three stepbrothers, Dean Wall and Herman Wall of Marion and Alvin Wall of Charleston, S.C. Madelyn W. Harper, 94
Madelyn Walker Harper, 94, of Tryon, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House. She was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of the late Eva Ellis Graham Walker and Richard Clendenning Walker. She was married for 56 years to her late husband, Dr. A. Reed Harper. She was a member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, an active member of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Opera Workshop, a horsewoman, a breeder of champion cocker spaniel dogs and an accomplished portrait and landscape artist. She had three children, Patricia Harper Neuenschwander of Flat Rock, Richard Walker Harper of Ruxton, Md., and the late A. Reed Harper Jr. She was also loved by her eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A private interment will be held at Tryon Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden. James A. Luke, 87
James A. Luke Jr., 87, of Hendersonville, died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House following a short illness. He was a native of New Orleans, La., and lived in Henderson County the last six years. He was a son of the late James A. Luke Sr. and Josephine Madere Luke. He was a member of the Hendersonville Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was the past president and active member of the California Association of Residential Resources. The focus of his attention was to help those people who needed assistance. In California, he was influential in creating legislation to benefit developmentally disabled people. As a member of the Young at Heart Club of the Hendersonville Seventh-day Adventist Church, he developed a program to provide transportation for people in need, particularly single mothers. If he saw a need and was able to fulfill it, he did. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Grace Luke; four sons, Virgil A. Luke of East Flat Rock, Jim A. Luke III and Dale E. Luke of Hendersonville and William P. Luke of Clovis, Calif.; four sisters, Ardath Burkhardt of Chalmette, La., and Betty Jane Taylor, Annette Bowyer and Dorothy Wilcox of Cleburne, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Ruby P. Bailey, 76
Ruby P. Revis Bailey, 76, of Arden, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital at Asheville after a period of declining health. She was a native of Haywood County, but lived most of her life in Buncombe County. She was a daughter of the late Steril W. and Rosa Lee Burnett Pressley. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Jim Revis, who died in 1987; two sisters, Mae Hightower and Ellen Fowler; four brothers, Jack Pressley, Lawrence Pressley, Earl Pressley and Oscar “Buster” Pressley; a grandson, Jimmy Clinton Nichols; and a granddaughter, Tabitha Revis. She retired from Magnavox in 1987 as a quality control inspector with 23 years of service. She previously attended Long Shoals Baptist Church and loved flowers, gardening and reading. She is survived by her husband of five years, Paul Bailey; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Rod Craig of Arden and Cathy and David Nichols of Hendersonville; two sons and their wives, Gary and Freida Revis of Bethel and Glen and Gail Revis of Weaverville; a brother, Hubert Pressley of Canton; and six grandchildren, Jamie Revis, Brandon Craig, April Nichols, Nicole Revis, Seth Nichols and Matthew Revis. Edward V. Bakanas, 70
Edward V. Bakanas, 70, of Hendersonville, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in his home. He was born April 15, 1932, in New Britain, Conn., the son of John and Agatha Bakanas. He was a 1949 graduate of New Britain High School and attended Dallas College of Southern Methodist University. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving with the 25th Machine Records Unit of the Adjutant General Division. He subsequently worked with the Hartford Fire Insurance Group for 41 years, serving offices in Dallas, Chicago, Memphis and retiring from Home Office in Hartford, Conn., in1994. He moved to Hendersonville in August 1994. He enjoyed hiking, golfing, bowling, feeding the birds and chasing chipmunks and squirrels. He leaves his loving wife, Corliss Bakanas; his daughters, Dr. Erin Bakanas of St. Louis, Mo., and Lisa Bakanas, attorney, of Middletown, Conn.; his sons, Allan Bakanas of Selden, N.Y., Mark Bakanas of Bolton, Conn., and Mathew Bakanas of Eugene, Ore.; his stepdaughter, Cristin Gagne Boynton of Gilbert, Ariz.; and seven stepgrandchildren. Evelyn Patricia “Pat” Childress, 75, of Hendersonville, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital at Asheville following a period of declining health. She was born in Surry County, the daughter of the late Gilbert Tillotson and Bessie Adams Tillotson. She was the wife of Claude S. Childress Jr., who died March 24. She was a resident of Henderson County since 1967 and was of the Quaker faith. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Whorton of Atlanta; and her two sons, C. Swanson Childress III of Hendersonville and John Childress of Edneyville. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville. The Rev. Margaret M. Groover, 97
Margaret Middleton Groover, 97, of Highlands, formerly of College Walk, Brevard and Miami Beach, Fla., died Friday, July 26, 2002. She was born in Savannah, Ga., the daughter of the late Porter Middleton and Sally Virginia Campbell Middleton. She was the wife of Gene Groover, who passed away in 1969. She was a homemaker and worked with her husband in Groovers Pharmacy in Miami Beach for 20 years and at Boca Raton Hotel Drug Store. She was a graduate of Georgia State College for women. She is survived by her two daughters, Peggy Cowherd of Highlands and Billie Olesen and her husband, Robert, of Hendersonville; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Ruth H. Guinn, 84
Ruth Horney Guinn, 84, of Canaan Land Drive, Fletcher, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in an area hospital. She was a native of Avery County, a daughter of the late Lydia Carver and Frank L. Horney and the wife of Ira Guinn Sr., who died July 16, 1992. She was also preceded in death by her children, Thelma G. Fox, Phyllis G. Conner and Roy Guinn. She retired as a nurse’s aide from Park Ridge Hospital and was a member of Fletcher First Baptist Church for 55 years, having served as a Sunday school teacher of the Dorcas Class. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Survivors include a daughter, Betty G. Allen of Penrose; three sons, Paul Guinn of Swannanoa, Ira Guinn Jr. of Rosman and John Ray Guinn of Fletcher; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Fleta Parlier of Morganton and Rosa Hodges and Ethel Gwyn of Banner Elk. Grace S. Hampton, 71, of Hendersonville, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in her home after an extended illness. She was a native of Madison County and a resident of Henderson County for more than 45 years. She was a daughter of the late Junie Shook and Maggie Gentry Shook and the wife of Samuel H. Hampton, who died in 2000. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Shook, Clyde Shook and Ed Shook; twin sisters, Ora Shook and Nora Shook; and a grandson, Mark Eugene Hampton. She was employed by the Royal Steak House for 15 years before retiring in 1986. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, Michael Hampton and his wife, Lynn, of Hendersonville; a daughter, Carolyn Hampton of Hendersonville; four brothers, Jimmy Shook and Robert Shook of Asheville, Donald Shook of Upper Laurel and Guy Shook of Jefferson City, Mo.; four sisters, Ethel Thomas of Myrtle Beach, S.C., June Milton and Ruth Rice of Asheville and Shirley Fisher of Black Mountain; three grandchildren, Ronnie Nesbitt of Mills River and Stephanie Nesbitt and Kenneth Hampton of Hendersonville; three great-grandchildren, Megan and Hannah Hensley of Hendersonville and Joshua Nesbitt of Mills River. Tally Milstrey, 79
Tally Goldberg Miklowitz Milstrey’s remarkable life of 79 years came to an end Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in the Elizabeth House. She was born and bred in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late Max Goldberg and Beatrice Sandler Goldberg. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Goldberg. From 1946 to 1978, she made her home in Schenectady, N.Y. She lived in Danvers, Mass., from 1978 to 1985 and lived in Hendersonville for the past 17 years. She will be remembered for her sense of style, her grace and rhythm, her wit and humor, her candor and her radiant beauty. She is survived by her adoring husband, Win Milstrey; her devoted daughter, Laura Miklowitz and her husband, Rick Vidal, of Hendersonville; a sister, Enid Sugarman of Lauder Hill, Fla.; two brothers, Murray Goldberg of Palmdale, Calif., and Norman Goldberg of Sweden; and the loving embrace of Win’s children, Rae and Chuck Burometto and Linda and Chris Buss of Schenectady, N.Y., and Glenn and Maria Milstrey of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and their beautiful children. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Kirby Memorial Chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. A gathering will follow at the Milstrey home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, P.O. Box 2395, Hendersonville, N.C. 28793-2395. Shuler Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael A. Hickson, 43
Michael Allan Hickson, 43, of Knightdale, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in his home. He was born Nov. 28, 1958, in Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., to Dorothy Perkins Hickson of Medford, N.Y., and the late Alvin Jack Hickson. He was a 1976 graduate of Buffalo High School. He worked at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, N.Y., as an EMT for 14 years before moving to North Carolina. He worked as an engineering technician at Cree Inc., a semiconductor manufacturing company in the Research Triangle Park. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Lorri Brill-Hickson, formerly of West Islip, N.Y.; a brother, Jay Hickson and wife, Lucy, of Medford, N.Y.; a sister, Cynthia H. Miller and husband, Ronald, of West Chazy, N.Y.; four nephews, John and Joseph Hickson and Ronnie and Paul Miller; a niece, Kira Miller; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jerome and Lorraine Brill of Hendersonville, formerly of West Islip, N.Y.; and a brother-in-law, Jeff Brill and wife, Kimberly, of Cleveland, Ohio. A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, N.C. Eddie Bing will officiate. Family and friends are invited to the home following the memorial service. The family has suggested that flowers be omitted and memorials made to the Brain Tumor Center at Duke University Medical Center, 3828, Durham, N.C. 27710, attention Patty McKenna in memory of Michael, supporting Team Hickson, made payable to “Duke 03BT,” or Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary’s St., Fourth Floor, Raleigh, N.C. 27605. Montine W. Prather, 88
Ruth Montine Whitmire Prather, 88, of Carolina Village Road, No. 115, formerly of Spartanburg, S.C., died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in her home. She was a native of Toccoa, Ga., the daughter of the late Rufus Melvin Whitmire and Bertha Marilla Garland Whitmire. She retired from Family Security Life Insurance Company. She was a member of Central Methodist Church in Spartanburg, S.C., from 1944 to 1982, where she was active in the Women’s Society, the Altar Guild and the children’s Sunday school. she was currently a member of Hendersonville First United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, John W. Prather Jr.; a son, John William Prather III and his wife, Cindy, of Wilmington; a grandson, Robert Whitmire Prather of Wilmington; a granddaughter, Ashley Louise Prather of Wilmington; a brother, Melvin Whiteside of Asheville; four nieces; and two nephews. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Carolina Village. The Rev. Ed Heard will officiate. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. Friday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, S.C. The Rev. Mike Vandiver will officiate. The family will receive friends after the graveside service Friday, and at other times will be at the home. Herbert Whitbeck, 87
Herbert Van Allen Whitbeck, 87, of Double Oak Court, Horse Shoe, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002. He was a native of Union, N.J., until 1982, when he and his wife, the late Elaine A. Whitbeck, moved to Hendersonville. In 1994 they moved to their current address in Horse Shoe. They were married for 53 years. He was a graduate of the University of Newark, School of Business Administration (now Rutgers University), Class of 1946, and was a member of the International Business Fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. His education was interrupted by World War II, from April 1941 through December 1945. He served both stateside and in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps as a non-commissioned officer. After World War II, he progressed to finance office manager for the Krueger Beverage Company, senior accountant for the Keansburg Water Company, and later retired from the Kean State College Comptrollers’ Office in 1979, all while living in New Jersey. Locally, he was the past president of the Stoney Brook Home Owners Association, a member of the American Legion Post 77 and a member of Hendersonville First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his daughters, Pamela A. Whitbeck Blease of Easton, Pa., and Kathleen E. Whitbeck Ward of Norfolk, Va.; and four grandchildren, Kevin J. Blease of Easton, Pa., Amy J. Blease Strockoz of Nazareth, Pa., Tara A. Ward McWhorter of Birmingham, Ala., and Sarah E. Ward of Norfolk, Va. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel. Dr. Tim Porter will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 204 Sixth Ave. W., Hendersonville, N.C. 28739.

James B. Hickman, 82
James B. Hickman, 82, of Brevard, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, in Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital at Asheville. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time.
