Howard Kary Drum, 80, of Newton died Jan. 6, 2001 at Catawba Memorial Hospital. Born in Caldwell County, Mr. Drum was former owner of Drum s Radio & TV and Drum s Grocery. He was the son of the late Winfield and Roann Barker Drum. Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at Pisgah United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. Bill Taylor officiated, assisted by Rev. Cathy Cook. Survivors included his wife, Juanita Cline Drum; two sons, Larry of Newton and Tracy of Sherrills Ford; one daughter, Denise D. Wright of Newton; one sister, Lantha Drum of Gastonia; ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Mary Louise Cash Graham
Mrs. Mary Louise Cash Graham, 96, of Denver died Jan. 7, 2001 at Brian Center in Lincolnton. Born in Lincoln County, Mrs. Graham was the daughter of the late Sandy and Della Hambright Hunter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cash Graham Sr. , and three sons. Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at Rock Hill United Methodist Church in Lowesville where she was a member. Burial was at Rock Hill/Gold Hill Cemetery. Survivors included two sons, Cash, Jr., and Chester of Charlotte; three daughters, Sarah Hunter of Stanley, Annie Powell ofCharlotte, and Barbara Nixon of Denver; one brother, K. C. Hunter and one sister, Lillian Boyd both of Charlotte; 57 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren and 11 great-great-great grandchildren. E. F. Margaret Price Crutchfield
Margaret Price Crutchfield, 88, of Denver, died, May 15, 2001 at Lakewood Care Center. She was a member of Beth Haven Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband John C. Crutchfield, her parents Henry McIlwaine and Norrie Abernathy Price, two sons and one great-great granddaughter. Funeral services were held at Forest Lawn in Charlotte. Survivors include a son, Laurence Crutchfield of Charlotte;three daughters: Linda Horton, of Denver,Sarah Gregg of Fayetteville, Helene Mettcalf of Gastonia;15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren. James Andrew Reep, Sr.
James Andrew Reep, Sr. , 87, died May 16, 2001, at Brian Center, in Lincolnton. He was born Sept. 14, 1913 in Lincoln County and was a member of Crowell Memorial U. M. C. He was preceded in death by his wife Jettie Schronce Reep, and his parents Jasper Franklin and Liza Jane Schronce Reep. Services were at Crowell Memorial. He is survived by a son, James A. Reep Jr. of Claremont; two daughters, Barbara Ritchie and Dare Lewis of Lincolnton; two sisters, Georgia Lowe of Maiden and Lillie Berryhill of Vale; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren. James Arthur Risser
James Arthur Risser, 64, of Denver, died from cancer on May 18, 2001. Mr. Risser was born Feb. 6, 1937, in Chicago to the late Ivan Henry and Pauline Woodside Risser. Mr. Risser served as damage control officer aboard the fleet oiler U. S. S. Kaskaskia and engineering officer on the landing ship transport U. S. S. Cheboygan County and achieved the rank of Lieutenant j. g. Mr. Risser became the third-generation president of U. S. Bottlers Machinery Company, Inc. , a packaging machinery company founded in 1912 by his grandfather. In 1980 he moved the company's headquarters to Charlotte. Mr. Riser received several patents for filling machines. His passion for woodworking resulted in many heirlooms including furniture and toys that are treasured by his family. A memorial service was heldMay 22, 2001 at Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver. Mrs. Ila Dellinger Abernethy, 98, of Campground Road, Denver, died May 24, 2001. Funeral services were held at Denver Baptist Church. Her grandsons, Dr. Ron Lynch, Rev. Ernest Sisk and Jeff Harris, conducted funeral services. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Emma Dellinger; her husband, Horace D. Abernethy; a daughter, Frances Lynch; a son Richard Abernethy; a grandson Michael Lynch, two brothers and seven sisters. Survivors include: two daughters, Virginia Harris of Pumpkin Center, Marilyn Reid of Maiden; a son H. Ovalene Stroud Belton, 68, of Denver, died May 29, 2001 after a long battle with cancer. Funeral services were held at Warlick Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Minnie Whetstone Stroud. Sarah Spangler, 88, of Denver died July 3, 2001. Funeral services were held July 6 at Bethel United Methodist Church where she was a life long member. A native of Lincoln County, she was a homemaker and daughter of the late John A. and Mamie Gabriel Sigmon. Survivors include two brothers, Henry Sigmon of Connecticut and J. W. Addie Brown Sisk, 89, of Denver died Tuesday, July 10, 2001 at home. Services were held at Forest Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Everette Cooper officiating. Mrs. Sisk was born on June 7, 1912 in Horry Co. , SC to the late Pal and Mary Martin Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Sisk, two daughters, Mary J. Jordan and Lila J. Hill, and one son, Donald Johnson. Linda Ballard Sigmon, 51 of Denver,died Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at Baptist Hospital in Winston, Salem. Services were held Saturday, July 14 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Westfall and Rev. Grady Barringer officiating. Mrs. Sigmon was born on November 3, 1949 in Iredell County. She was a secretary at Duke Power Company. Survivors include: her husband, Tony Sigmon of the home; one son, Jason Lee Sigmon of the home; one daughter, Lauren Paige Sigmon of the home; her parents Lester and Dorothy Ballard of Denver; one sister, Carolyn Sigmon of Sherrills Ford; two grandchildren. Virginia Sherrill Brotherton, 80, of 8387 Hagers Ferry Road, Denver died Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital. Funeral services were held August 17, 2001 at Webb's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tony Matthews officiating. Mrs. Brotherton was born on March 27, 1921 in Catawba County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sullivan and Mamie Dellinger Sherrill, husband, Mack Brotherton, a son, Tommy Brotherton and a daughter, Chippy Brotherton Williams. Nicole Ann Bowman, 16, of Vesuvius Furnace Road in Iron Station died Thursday, August 16, 2001. Her funeral service was held Monday, August 20, 2001 at St. Dorothy's Catholic Church. Miss Bowman was born in Stevens Point, Wis. She attended East Lincoln High school where she was an honor student, softball player, basketball player, volleyball player, member of the Pep Club and Mustang Pride and the homecoming court. Donald Rudolph Wolf, 72 of Christopher Road, Denver died Friday, August 17, 2001. A memorial service was held on August 23, 2001 at Revival Tabernacle in Stanley. Mr. Wolf was born on July 11, 1929 in Wisconsin to the late Rudolph and Florence Shultz Wolf. He worked for Holiday Acres Resort. E. E. “Tony” Hayes
Emerald "Tony" Ellerby Hayes, 82, of Denver, died May 10, 2002 at Stanley Total Living Center in Stanley. A native of Hendersonville, he was the son of the late Clarence and Eula Mae Levi Hayes. He was retired from Sherrill Industries where he worked as a sales representative. Mr. Hayes served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton. He is survived by his wife, Corrie Juanita Merrill Hayes; two sons, Don M. Hayes of Dalton, GA, and John M. Hayes of Denver; two sisters, Vivian Setzer and Marie Yelton, both of Spindale; and by five grandchildren. A memorial service was be held The Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors on May 13 with the Rev. Dr. Charles Brown officiating. Joan Thornburg Cash
Joan Catherine Thornburg Cash, 61, of Lincolnton died May 8 at her home. She was born April 16, 1941 in Lincoln County, the daughter of the late Carl Lee Thornburg. Funeral services were held May 10 at Laboratory United Methodist Church with Rev. Ron Lytle officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Cash was secretary at East Lincoln Middle School. Survivors include her husband, Ken; a son. Mark; and daughters, Mrs. Beth Sipe, Mrs. Lou Beal, and Mrs. Lynn Gilbert all of Lincolnton; her mother, Mrs. Beulah Thornburg Abernethy of Lincolnton; and eight grandchildren. Amber Brooke Millsaps, 10, of Lincolnton died May 3 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Funeral services were held May 5 at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Hamrick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Born April 27, 1992 in Catawba County, Amber was a fourth grader at Pumpkin Center Elementary School where she was a cheerleader for the Pumpkin Center Panthers. She also was selected for school Beamer for the upcoming school year. J. W. Sigmon, 78, of Denver died May 5 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held May 8 at Bethel United Methodist Church with Rev. Ted Hendrix officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Sigmon was born December 24, 1923 in Catawba County to the late John and Mamie Sigmon. He worked in the landscaping business and was a farmer. Russell Thompson Hager
Russell Thompson Hager, 93, of Campground Road, died Sept. 21, 2002 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at Denver United Methodist Church where Mr. Hager was a lifelong member. Rev. Jeffrey W. Johnsen officiated. Burial was in the Denver Community Cemetery. Mr. Hager was born July 25, 1909 in Lincoln County, the son of the late Ivey Nathaniel and Ottie West King Hager. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margie Cashion Hager, later by his second wife, Vatha Navey Hager. He was retired from Union Carbide. Survivors include a son, Charles R. Hager of New London, NC; three daughters, Jacquelyn Price of Mount Holly, Ann Cloninger of Denver, and Emily Murr of Fort Mill, SC; two stepdaughters, Jane Thomas of Green Mountain, NC and Sue Sherrill of Denver; 8 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren. Caitlyn Reed Painter
Caitlyn Reed Painter, 5, of Lebanon Road in Maiden, died Sept. 21, 2002 at N. C. Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem. Caitlyn was born Oct. 18, 1996 in Catawba County. She attended Mt. Anderson Baptist Church where funeral services were held on Sept. 23. Rev. Charles Ingles and Rev. Raymond Hamrick officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include her parents, Todd and Melanie Lawing Painter; paternal grandparents, Bobby and Phoebe Painter of Maiden; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Winifred Lawing of Maiden. Paul S. Sherrill
Mr. Paul Shellem Sherrill, 79, died at home Nov. 26, 2002. He was born June 12, 1923 in Lincoln County and was the son of the late Thomas Sullivan and Mamie Frances Sherrill. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Mr. Sherrill was a US Army veteran serving in the 551st AAA Anti-Aircraft Battery C in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Eamet Campaign Medal with five bronze service stars. He worked at H. K. Porter of Charlotte until his retirement. Funeral services were held Nov. 29 at Webbs Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Merle Collins Sherrill; son Jim Sherrill; two daughters Kaye Eurey and T'Lene Barker; niece Michelle Newman; brothers Keith Sherrill and Harry Sherrill; sister Pansy Wilson; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Louis Todd McConnell
Mr. Louis Todd McConnell, 42, of 3732 Brent Trail, Lincolnton, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002. Services were held at 2 p. m. Sunday at Boger City Baptist Church with Rev. Eric Reel officiating. Mr. McConnell was born Sept. 13, 1960 in Lincoln County to Louis E. and Barbara Moore McConnell. He worked side-by-side with his parents at McConnell Service Station on Highway 150 and was currently employed at Bass Grading. He was a lifetime member of Boger City Volunteer Fire Department, serving since the age of 16. He was currently serving as assistant chief, a position he held for the past 10 years. He was a dedicated community servant. Survivors include his wife, Darlene Gibson McConnell; daughter, Andrea; son, Brent, all of the home; his parents, and a sister, Julie Spake, all of Lincolnton. Paul S. Jonas
Paul Stevenson Jonas, 57, of Taylorsville died June 10, 2003 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Born Sept. 8, 1946, in Alexander County, he was the son of the late Butler and Effie Bentley Jonas. Jonas was owner and operator of The Sign Shop in Denver. Funeral services were June 13 at Friendly Baptist Church in Taylorsville where he was a member. Rev. Harold Ashe officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Stephania Warren of Union Grove; a son, Aaron Jonas of Charlotte; two brothers, Melvin Jonas of Thomasville and Carroll Jonas of Southport; three sisters, Ruth Tyndall of Newton, Anne McDonald and Faye Jonas both of Taylorsville; and two grandchildren. Leon E. Singletary
Leon Edward Singletary, Jr. , 44, of Denver died June 12, 2003 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. He was born Oct. 15, 1958 in Rockingham, the son of the late Leon Edward and Doris Graham Singletary. He was co-owner of L & R Corporation in Charlotte. Leon was best known for his zest for life and love for his wife and two daughters. His smile, laughter and enthusiasm will remain in our hearts forever. Funeral services were held June 14 at Denver United Methodist Church where he was a member and on June 15 at Jesus First Freewill Baptist Church in Hamlet. Burial followed in Richmond County Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Rene E. Mary Rich Amberson, 80, of Charlotte died November 8 at Presbyterian Hospital. Funeral services were held November 11 in the Chapel at Raymer Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Rich Family Cemetery. Survivors include one son James E. Amberson of Charlotte; four daughters, Joyce Walker of Stanley, Mary Ervin of Charlotte, Alice Lagasse and Ellen Deese of Locust; one brother, Ernest Rich of Charlotte; and one sister, Ruby White of Midland.

Robert J. Cashion
Robert J. Cashion, 73, of Davidson died Nov. 8, 2003 at Huntersville Oaks. Services were held November 11 at Mimosa Cemetery in Davidson. He was a 1950 graduate of Davidson High School and attended Davidson College. Cashion was a US Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Edith Hobart Cashion; one son, Robert Douglas Cashion of Huntersville; and two sisters, Joan Cashion Knox of Denver and Frances Cashion Rudisill of Davidson. Everette B. Wilkinson
Everette Blair Wilkinson, Jr. , 87, of King Wilkinson Rd in Denver died May 27, 2004 at Lincoln Nursing Center. Funeral services were held May 30 at Macedonia Baptist Church where he was a member, served as a deacon, Sunday School director, and teacher. The Rev. Ken Jones and Rev. Ken Gibson officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Born in Lincoln County to the late Everette and Zanie Dellinger Wilkinson, he was employed as a timber buyer for McClure Lumber Co. before he worked as a parole and probation officer for the State of North Carolina. He became a hearing officer for western North Carolina before he retired. For his many years of dedicated service, he was awarded the North Carolinas Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Mr. Wilkinson served as a county commissioner from 1946 to 1950, was on the Lincoln County School Board in the 1950s, and on the board of trustees for the planning and construction of the Lincoln County Hospital from 1966 to 1970. He was instrumental in organizing the Pumpkin Center Community Building and served as a trustee. He was a lifelong resident of Lincoln County and loved serving his community. Survivors include his wife, Zellie B. Wilkinson; one son, Rodney Wilkinson of Denver; one daughter, Pauline Phillips of Sophia; one sister, Leila W. Hager of Lowesville; three grandsons, Dale and David Wilkinson of Denver and Michael Deaton of Shelby; two granddaughters, Cindy Lambert of Shelby and Alisa Phillips of Sophia; and three great-grandchildren. Collen S. Dellinger
Mrs. Colleen S. Dellinger, 75, of Burton Lane in Denver died May 26, 2004 at Lincoln Medical Center. She was born in Lincoln County in 1929 to the late Hugh and Luna Fish Sherrill. She was a homemaker. Funeral services were held May 29 at Webbs Chapel United Methodist Church where Mrs. Dellinger was a longtime member. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Rev. Hubert Clinard officiated. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Everette E. Dellinger of the home; two sons, Gary Dellinger and Tim Dellinger of Denver; two daughters, Janet Abernethy of Denver and Gail Timmerman of Charlotte; one brother, Rudy Sherrill of Denver; three sisters, Iris Burgin of Alexis, Billie June Hooper and Sharon Quinn both of Denver; and ten grandchildren. Marion M. Cherry
Marion Malynda Gabriel Cherry, 82, of North Highway 16 in Denver died May 29, 2004 at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home. She was born in 1921 in Catawba County to the late Orland Wilson Gabriel and Margaret Annie Lou Sanders Gabriel. A graduate of Appalachian State University, she taught at Thomasboro Elementary School in Charlotte before becoming a homemaker. Funeral services were held June 1 at Unity Presbyterian Church where she was a member. Rev. Carol Clark officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Survivors include her sons, Alfred Cherry and wife Rita of Denver and Ernie Cherry and wife Theresa of Winston Salem; daughters Virginia Dellinger and husband Gary of Denver, Malynda Hollar of Catawba and Sharon Reddick and husband Wiley of Greensboro; brother Orland Gabriel, Jr. of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Lee Cherry. Memorials may be made to Unity Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 8210 Unity Church Rd., Denver, NC 28037. Viola M. Reeder
Viola McKenzie Reeder, 75, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, after a two-year battle with myelodysplastic syndrome. Mrs. Reeder was born August 23, 1928 in Randolph County, shethe daughter of the late Raleigh and Florence McKenzie. She was a lifelong member of Midway Wesleyan Church of Randleman, NC. While attending there, she was the organist for over 40 years. She also taught Sunday School and served on the church board. She was a retired worker. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, William D. Reeder, Jr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Grover Nunnery of Denver; a granddaughter, Savannah of Denver; a sister, Jane Slack of Denton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Sue McKenzie, Cape Coral, FL; John T. (Tommy) and Wilma McKenzie, Asheboro; Reece McKenzie, Randleman; Violet Stutts, Randleman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at June 2, 2004, at Midway Wesleyan Church in Randleman. Anne E. McCall Callaway
Anne Elizabeth "Tis-A-Babe" McCall Callaway, 85, of Denver died August 18, 2004. Funeral services were held Aug. 21 at Denver United Methodist Church where she was a member, with Revs. Jeff Johnsen and Tim Killian officiating. Mrs. Callaway was the daughter of the late Fred Garson McCall and Fannie Howard McCall. The Salutatorian of the Sherrills Ford High School Class of 1936, she and her husband, Dwight Callaway, Sr. , were married in a surprise ceremony at the school's annual banquet two years after their graduation. She was one of North Carolina's pioneering female athletes. As a standout high school basketball player, she accepted an athletic scholarship to Charlotte's Geyer's Business College where she played four years. The team played against YWCA teams, textile mill squads and a few other local college women's teams where they always drew crowds. She continued to be a sports fan all her life cheering on teams on TV as well as her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren when they participated in sports. After graduation, she worked for Charlotte's American Trust Company (now Bank of America) and Associated Transport before joining her husband in founding Callaway Homes in Denver in 1969. Mrs. Callaway was preceded in death by her husband Dwight, a brother, Lewis Grundy "L.G." McCall; sister Ada Lee McCall Sigmon and grandchildren Kent and Paige Cherry. Survivors include brothers, Fred McCall, Jr. of Buies Creek, Ned McCall of Charlotte; four children, Gailya Cherry, Dwight Callaway, Jr, and Annette Lawing of Denver and Forrest Callaway of Saluda; 8 and 8great-grandchildren. Emily D. Kulan
Emily D. Kulan, 84, died August 18, 2004 at her home in Huntersville. Survivors include Angela and Dean Kammler of Denver. Services were held at Raymer Funeral Home and mass at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Huntersville. Rose Marie Barciz
Mrs. Rose Marie Barciz, 76, of Graystone Lane in Maiden died Aug. 21, 2004. A memorial service was held Wednesday at Denver United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Edward of Maiden; three daughters, Lori Nunex, of Texas, Kathleen Jones of Indiana, and Debbie Montana of Michigan; two sisters, two brothers, and six grandchildren.
