Mrs. Eloise Carter Blackburn, 84, of 213 Forest Trail, formerly of 285 Old U.S. 701 Highway, Clinton, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Ingold Baptist Church with the Rev. Aubrey Quakenbush and the Rev. Gene Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in the Ingold Cemetery.
Mrs. Blackburn was born in 1916 in Sampson County to the late Eugene and Lollie Cain Carter. She was a member of Ingold Baptist Church and a member of the Golden Age Fun Club. She was a retired employee with Gayle Fashions. She was the widow of the late Clarence I. Blackburn. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Willa Dean Hansford; and her son, Ronald Blackburn.
She is survived by two daughters, Sue Marshburn of Wallace and Anita Louise Oakes of Raleigh; three sons, Gene Blackburn of Portland, Ore., Charles Blackburn of Lakewood, Ohio, and Larry Blackburn of Greensboro; four sisters, Francenia Carter and Roslyn Keith, both of Raleigh, and Marietta Robinson and Ruth Jernigan, both of Garland; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Michael Thomas Burke, 38, of 633 Eight St. North, formerly of Clinton, died Monday, March 26, 2001, in his home.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday in Mr. Gilead Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Dorothy Rudd officiating.
Mr. Burke was born in 1962 in Johnston County to Hilda S. Burke and the late Clarence C. Burke. He was a computer technician.
He is survived by his mother, Hilda S. Burke of Clinton; and his sister, Nancy Rose Burke of Clinton.

Dr. Morris Lucian Bell, 77
CLINTON — Dr. Morris Lucian Bell, 77, of 301 West Main St., died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. today (April 3) at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hugh Cameron officiating.
Dr. Bell was born in 1923 in Sampson County to the son of the late Irving Samuel and Macy Matthews Bell. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a former member of the Topsail Beach rescue squad and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and graduated from the University of Maryland Dental School. He was a retired dentist.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Bass Bell; one daughter, Lesa Bell Moore of Clinton; two sons, Dr. Joe Bell and Jeff Bell, both of Clinton; one sister, Peggy B. Reynolds of Raleigh; one brother, Irving S. Bell Jr. of Raleigh; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Boyette was born in 1919 in Sampson County to the late Jimmy Issac and Sudie Byrd Boyette. He was a retired farmer.

Mr. Barefoot was born in 1942 in Sampson County to the late Rev. Leo Barefoot. He was the owner and operator of George Barefoot Utility Co. and a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his brother, Wesley Barefoot.
He is survived by his stepdaughter, Carla Martin of Raleigh; his stepson, Ryan Martin of Raleigh; his mother, Octavie R. Barefoot of Clinton; four sisters, Edith Sasser and Garnell Brogden, both of Mount Olive, Frances Jernigan of Clinton, and Iris Costin of Maple Hill; and four brothers, Shelton Barefoot, Floyd Barefoot and Gerald Barefoot, all of Raleigh, and Glenn Barefoot of Pennsylvania.

ROSEBORO — Mr. David Ramson Batts Jr., 75, of 303 Pleasant St., died Monday, July 9, 2001, in his nephew's home in Smithfield.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Roseboro Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Ray Jernigan officiating.
Mr. Batts was born in 1926 in Wilson County and was the son of the late David Ramson and Rena Bell Batts Sr. He was a retired railroad employee, school maintenance supervisor, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by his son, Michael Batts of Los Angeles, Calif.; his daughter, Kimberly Batts; three sisters, Dorothy Mae Turner of Chadbourn, Bonnie Finch and Clare Bell Brantley, both of Wilson.

CLINTON — Miss Elizabeth James Chesnutt, 86, of 2889 Rowan Road, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in Sampson Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today in Rowan Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. R.L. Kivett officiating.
Miss Chesnutt was born in 1914 in Sampson County to the late Bruce and Callie Malpass Chesnutt. She was a member of Rowan Baptist Church. She was a retired lieutenant and nurse in the U.S. Army having served in World War II. She was a nurse with Highsmith Rainey Hospital in Fayetteville and a retired nurse from Sampson Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ervin Chesnutt, Gilbert Chesnutt, Elliott Chesnutt, and Charles Chesnutt.
She is survived by her sister, Eleanor Clark of Graham.

Born in 1929 in Amherst County, Va., Mr. Cooper was the son of Calvin Everette and Nellie Gracie Tyree Cooper Sr. He was retired from the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean War and Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Mamie B. Cooper; three daughters, Patsy Alcorn of Bay City, Mich., Cheryl Pilgrim of Ocala, Fla., and Karen Cantinari of Savona, N.Y.; three sons, Jerry Cooper of Washington, Mich., Mike Cooper of Rochester, N.Y., and Steve Cooper of Sterling Heights, Mich.; two stepsons, Henry Allen Matthis of Clinton and Robert B. Matthis of Salemburg; one brother, Franklin D. Cooper of Ohio; nine grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Cooper was born in 1920 in Cumberland County to the late Allen Judson and Mahala Harris Butler. She was a member of Rowan Baptist Church and a housewife. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert L "Bud" Matthis; her second husband, Calvin E. "Pete" Cooper; and two daughters, Vicci Gail Matthis and Leone M. Carden.
She is survived by two sons, Henry Allen Matthis of Clinton and Robert B. Mrs. Carter was born in Lenior County in 1910 to the late Jake and Lillie Moody Hill. She was a member of the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church and former employee with Sampson Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of the late George Carter and preceded in death by two sons, Lonnie Carter and Victor Carter.

Mrs. Fipps was born in 1954 in Sampson County to Edith Carter Starling and the late Ellis M. Starling. She was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Sammy Claude Foushee, 79
CLINTON — Mr. Sammy Claude Foushee, 79, of 406 Pineview Road, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. William L. Hawkins and the Rev. Leighton McKeithen officiating. Burial will be in Burchwood Cemetery in Roxboro at 3:30 p.m. with the Rev. Michael E. Berryman officiating.
Mr. Foushee was born April 22, 1922 in Person County to Roy C. and Ruth Tillman Foushee of Roxboro. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was active in the Boys Scout youth program, a member of the Southeastern Golf Association and a member of the Clinton Rotary Club, which he served as president. He worked for CP&L for more than 40 years and was an area manager before retiring in 1987. He was awarded the Boss of the Year by the Clinton Jaycees. He was an elder at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church and treasurer for more than 20 years. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Edward Foushee, Merritt Foushee and Maynard Foushee.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Woodward Foushee; two sons, Douglas R. Foushee of Rocky Mount and Jack T. Foushee of Clinton; three sisters, Elsie F. Timberlake of Winston-Salem, Arlene F. Long of Hurdle Mills and Ann F. Solomon of Roxboro; two brothers, Terry Foushee of Roxboro and Gardner Foushee of Rougemont; and three grandchildren.

GREENSBORO — Mrs. Grace Johnson Gagne, 79, of 2402 Bridgette Court, formerly of Wallace, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, in Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery in Wallace with the Rev. Roger Paxton officiating.
Mrs. Gagne was born in 1921 in Duplin County to the late John Perry and Alice Rouse Johnson. She was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church in Greensboro. She was a graduate of Meredith College and retired as chief dietitian with Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She was also the former chief dietitian with Sampson Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her brother, John E. Johnson of Raleigh.
She is survived by her sister, Esten Gillis of Caswell Beach; and her brother, Edward J. Johnson of Willard.

CLINTON — Mr. Franklin Edison Gainey, 65, of 501 Fulton St., died Monday, July 9, 2001, in his home.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Tyson officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Cemetery with military honors.
Mr. Gainey was born in 1936 to the late Marshall and Mary Catherine Pope Gainey. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He attended Kansas State University and was a field superintendent with Watson Electric Construction Company. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Verdie Gainey Powell and Eloise Gainey Falatovich; and four brothers, Felton Gainey, Jimmy Gainey, Alvin Gainey, and Edgar Gainey.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Corbett Gainey; one daughter, Catherine Cheryl Gainey of the home; five sisters, Minnie Lou Gainey, Thelma Gautier, Irene Darden and Gladys Martin, all of Clinton, and Shirley Cordes of Fayetteville; and six brothers, Austin Gainey, Wilbert Gainey, Marvin Gainey, Prentice Gainey, Milton Gainey, and T.M. Gainey, all of Clinton.

HARRELLS — Mr. Deleon Theodore Gurganious, 81, of 941 Wilmington Highway, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001 at Woodberry Wellness Center, Hampstead.
The funeral will be held Sunday (August 19) at 2 p.m. at the Royal-Hall Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Donald Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrells Community Cemetery.
Mr. Gurganious was a native of Sampson County, the son of the late James N. and Anne Matthis Gurganious. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Rhodes Gurganious; son, Robert "Bobby" Gurganious of Harrells; daughter, Eunice Dickens of Burgaw; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Born in 1912 in Sampson County, Mr. Hudson was the son of the late George W. and Mamie Dudley Hudson. He was a member of the Turkey Baptist Church, a former member of the Board of Deacons and a Retired Farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II & a former member of Board of Directors at Harrells Christian Academy.

Mr. Hudson was a native of Sampson County and the son of the late Marcus and Ruby Davis Hudson. He was a retired Master Sgt. with the National Guard. He was the retired owner of Hudson's T.V. Service. He was preceded in death by his brother, M.J. Hudson.

Born in 1911 in Sampson County, Mrs. Honeycutt was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Rosa Simmons Royal. She was a member of Piney Green Baptist Church and a seamstress at Topmode in Salemburg, NC. She was the widow of Olgie Lee Honeycutt.
She is survived by four daughters: Willa Dean Tew and Jeanene Allen, both of Clinton, Elois Williams of Autryville and Elva Jean Honeycutt of Dunn; four sons, Harrison L., Donald N. and J.D. Honeycutt, all of Roseboro, and Rev. Paul Honeycutt of Salemburg; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lucille Harbison and 3 grandchildren: Robert Godwin, Jennie Honeycutt and Leigh Ann Honeycutt.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hood's Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Frank Sandy and the Rev. Allen Overton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
A native of Johnston County, Mr. Hudson was the son of the late Isaac Vernon and Hattie Hood Hudson. He was a member of Hood's Grove Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Carolina Power and Light Co. after 40 years of service.
Mr. Hudson was the widower of Mary Lee Hudson. He is survived by two daughters, Jan H. Johnson of Clinton and Debbie H. Champion of Greenville; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends today from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Royal-Hall Funeral Home and other times at the home.
