Esther Bowes Chandler age 94 died Saturday morning at Person Memorial Hospital. She was born in Person County to the late John and Della Painter Bowes, Mrs. Chandler was wife of the late Victor T. Chandler, Sr. She attended Surl Primitive Baptist Church and later joined Rock Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are six children, Thomas Chandler, Linda C. Tuck, Bobby Chandler, and Ricky D. Chandler all of Timberlake, Becky Oliver Fox and Tony Chandler both of Roxboro; 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be 11:00 AM Monday, February 29, 2016 at Brooks and White Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Pulliam and the Rev. Vernon Wilkerson officiating. Burial will be in the Surl Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at her home 777 Victor Chandler Road, Timberlake, NC 27583.

Elva Chandler Buchanan

Elva Chandler Buchanan, 96, of 2176 Halifax Rd., Roxboro, died Thursday, February 18, 2016. Born in Mecklenburg County, VA, Mrs. Buchanan was one of 12 children of the late Louis and Bertha Crenshaw Chandler, wife of the late Robert J. Buchanan, Jr., mother of the late Gloria Vernon and grandmother of the late Anthony Munday. Mrs. Buchanan retired from textiles and was an active member of Providence Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, WMU and Bible School. Elva was a person who thoroughly enjoyed life. She took great pleasure in her family; enjoyed visting, traveling, and cooking. She was known as a happy person who brightened everyone's life with her trademark smile.
Mrs. Buchanan is survived by her children and their spouses, Ronald Buchanan and wife Linda, of Roxboro, Eric Buchanan and wife Shelby, of Greensboro, Linda Mansfield, of Raleigh, L. Fred Buchanan, of Denver, CO and Sandra Munday and husband Andy, of Raleigh; her son-in-law, Thomas Vernon, of Myrtle Beach, SC; eight grandchildren, one step-grandchild, nine great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; her special caregivers, Frances Short and Barbara Wallace.
Funeral services will be held 3 PM, Sunday, February 21, 2016, at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis McDonald. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held after the service.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Britt Garoni, Bill Garoni, Steve Buchanan, Brent Buchanan and grandsons-in-law Drake Evans and Greg Harmon.

Theresa Josephine Gisotti Bent

Theresa Josephine Gisotti Bent, 87, of 1597 Willow Oak Drive, Roxboro, died Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Bent was born in Albany County, NY, to the late Dominick and Maria Estell Dipiero Gisotti. She was a member of Sts. Mary & Edward Catholic Church.
Mrs. Bent is survived by her three children: Douglas Leonard Bent, Marie Bent Jansen and husband, Mitch, and Pauline Bent Porterfield and husband, Mike, all of Roxboro; four grandchildren: Paul Jansen, Tedd Jansen, Chad Jansen, and Chris Bent; three great-grandchildren: Meg, Harley, and Hailey Jansen.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, March 17, 2016 at Sts. Mary & Edward Catholic Church by the Father William Rodriguez. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

David Solomon Clay

Died: 04/21/2016 and resided in Hurdle Mills, NC
David Solomon Clay, 88, of 6939 Hurdle Mills Road, Hurdle Mills, died Thursday, April 21, 2016. Mr. Clay was born in Halifax County, VA, to the late Solomon Clay and Gracie Griffin Clay. He is preceded in death by three grandchildren: Terry Clayton, II, Donny Bowen, and Jack Helbig. Mr. Clay was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Mr. Clay is survived by his three children: Gwen C. Obriant of Roxboro, David S. Clay, II, and wife, Corina of Hurdle Mills, and Wendy C. Thaxton and husband, Haywood of Roxboro; one sister, Dorothy Grunke of Durham; seven grandchildren: Angel Long, Jamie Obriant, Kelly C. Helbig, Cindy Laws, Robert Jason Clayton, Tisha Pogioli, and Donald Thomas; fourteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:30 PM Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, April 24, 2016 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Kent Miller. Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Obriant, Douglas Clayton, Justin Helbig, Jason Clayton, Zack Clayton, Donald Thomas, Terry Clayton III, and Mike Laws.
Steven Michael Slade

Died: 04/19/2016 and resided in Timberlake, North Carolina
Steven Michael Slade, 71, of Timberlake formerly of Binghamton, NY, died April 19, 2016 following an extended illness. Born in New York, NY, Mr. Slade held various positions in the retail shoe business. He was an avid reader and sports fan who loved to talk politics and tell jokes. He attended Dickinson College. He was a member of Advisory Council of the Person County Senior Center and he delivered Meals on Wheels for Person County.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Gaffney-Slade, of Timberlake and his children, Greg Slade of Timberlake, Kristina Slade and husband Enno Jacobsen of San Francisco, CA, stepson Garth Flannigan and wife Jennifer of Raleigh, one granddaughter Holley Slade, three sisters, one nephew, several nieces, and brother-in-law Donald Gaffney, Jr.
Funeral services will be private. The family would like to express their thanks to the staffs of Roxboro Dialysis, UNC Physicians Network and Liberty Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.

Michelle Lynn Altenburger Watson-Council

Michelle Lynn Altenburger Watson-Council, 46, of 2215 Blalock Dairy Road, died Sunday, April 17, 2016. Born in Allen County, OH, Michelle is survived by her parents, Gary Lee Altenburger of Thailand, Judy Ann Brinkman Godwin and Richard "Dick" Godwin of Rougemont. Michelle's first priority was being a mother and loving wife, she was tough and always kept her faith. She was also an animal lover. Michelle worked as a nursing assistant for many years and also spent many years caring for the nursery at Roxboro Baptist Church and was a Christian.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Bryan Council of the home; four children: Tiffany Watson Perry, and husband Robert of Roxboro, Ryan Thomas Watson of Durham, Rebecca Ann Watson of Roxboro, and Evan Keith Council of Roxboro; five brothers: Gary Altenburger and wife, Sherry, of West Virginia, Jarrod Godwin of Alaska, Jason Godwin of Alaska, Thomas Godwin and wife, Catherine of Norway, and Michael Godwin of Burlington; father of her oldest three children, Clyde Watson, Jr. of Roxboro.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Dion Loving.
We would like to thank all family and friends for all prayers and support through the years, all those who participated in fund raisers, Duke Hospital for the great care they gave to Michelle, and to Dr. James Short for all the great support and care for Michelle. All was greatly appreciated.
