Judy Dunn Evans, 57, of 1705 Chambers Loop Rd., Timberlake, died Monday, April 11, 2016. Born in Person County, Mrs. Evans was the daughter of the late Noah Thomas Dunn, Sr. and Jean Creech Dunn. Mrs. Evans worked in the Department of Medicine at Duke University Hospital.
Mrs. Evans is survived by her husband Bernie Evans; one daughter, April Chandler and husband Travers, of Timberlake; two step-children, Tammy Lewis and husband Richard, of Clayton and Bernie Evans, of Arkansas; six grandchildren, Autumn Chandler, Candace Chandler, Aaron Capell, Jade Lewis, Ronnie Scoggins and Daniel Scoggins.
A memorial service will be held 2 PM Friday, April 15, 2016, at Brooks & White Chapel by the Dr. M. David Chambers. The family will receive friends following the service.
Betty Jean Barnes Garrett

Betty Jean Barnes Garrett, 89, died Wednesday, March 9, 2016. She was born in Detroit, MI to the late Clarence Masten Barnes and Cora Lee Moore Barnes. Mrs. Garrett was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Eric Stokes Garrett; step father, Marvin Hinson; and one sister, Virginia Stewart. She worked in retail and later in home health. Mrs. Garrett and her husband owned and operated Eric's Drive-In. She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Woody Garrett, Ronnie Garrett and wife Amanda, and H.B. Garrett, all of Roxboro; one grandchild, Ron Garrett; and two great-grandchildren, Payne Thomas Garrett and Davis Eric Garrett.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, March 11, 2016 at Brooks and White Funeral Home by Rev. Jeff Nash and Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:45-10:45 AM, prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be sons and grandson.

Hermann Wilhelm Schmidt

HERMANN Wilhelm SCHMIDT, 82, of 145 KELLY CARVER RD, ROXBORO, died Monday, March 7, 2016 at the Roxboro Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Mainz, Germany, Mr. Schmidt was the son of the late Hermann Wilhelm and Paula Maria Dolge Schmidt and husband of the late Joyce Spake Schmidt for 45 years. Mr. Schmidt served in the US Army during the Korean War. He was the manager of engineering at the Kennedy Space Center for 20 years; Director of Audio Visual Installation and Repairs in Satellite Beach, Fl; and later retired from Person County School Systems as a IT advisor. He was of the Methodist faith for over 50 years and a lay speaker, presently attended Theresa Baptist Church; and he was a volunteer clergy at Person Memorial Hospital. Mr. Schmidt volunteered for Home Health and Hospice of Person County and the Medical Reserve Corp, he also volunteered for the Person County Farmers Market with the proceeds going to the Person County Group Homes and the Christian Help Center. Mr. Schmidt was a valuable member of Person County and will be missed my many.
Mr. Schmidt is survived by his extended family, Bill and Angela Cole, Austin Cole, and Kelsey Cole all of Timberlake; Myrtle Cole, of Durham and Nancy Stone, of Roxboro; his wife's sister, Shirley Crumpton and husband Jack of Roxboro, and the Crumpton's family.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Brooks and White Chapel with the Rev. Herbert Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Ruth Cook Barrett

Ruth Cook Barrett of Hyco Lake, Semora, N.C., Died on Monday, March 7, 2016. She was born in Johnston County, N.C., February 28, 1929 to Roy and Kathleen Cook. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Clifford Edwin Barrett, Jr., three children, Clifford E. Barrett, III of Singapore, Raymond Charles Barrett of Thomasville, Ga., and Lisa Barrett Stumpf of Apex, N.C., six grandchildren and one great-grandson. She is also survived by one sister, Dr. Catherine Ponder of Palm Springs, Ca. and her sister-in-law, Sybil Cook of Ft. Payne, Al. She is preceded in death by one brother, Floyd Cook of Ft. Payne, Al. Ruth grew up in Fayetteville, N.C. and graduated from High Point College. Her career in education included teaching first grade at Burlington City Schools, Lillburn Elementary School, Gwinnett County, Ga., The Gov't School on Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, and in an International School in Tehran, Iran. One of her favorite pastimes was quilting.
A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at Brooks and White Funeral Home in Roxboro, N.C.

Nathaniel Thomas Hargis Sr.

Nathaniel Hargis, 64, of 25 Sugar Bear Dr., died Saturday, March 5, 2016. Mr. Hargis was born in Person County to the late George Edward Hargis and Lillian Parrott Hargis. He is also preceded in death by his first wife, Dale Evans Hargis and one brother, Stanley Hargis. Mr. Hargis was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. He was also a former member of the Baptist Men and sang in the choir. Mr. Hargis worked with Coca-Cola for thirty-nine years.
Mr. Hargis is survived by his wife, Angela Elliott Hargis, of the home; one daughter, Bridget H. Goodwin and husband Jimmy and one son, Nate Hargis and wife Amanda, both of Timberlake; three brothers: Terry Hargis of Leasburg, Richard Hargis of Southerlin, VA, and Mark Hargis of Roxboro; two sisters: Lona H. Lockhart of Roxboro, and Lila H. Martin of Prospect Hill; five grandchildren: Jessica Goodwin, Gavin Goodwin, Cayden Goodwin, Aubrey Hargis, and Emory Hargis, all of Timberlake.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM Sunday, March 6, 2016 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, March 7, 2016 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Barry Chambers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Michael Hargis, Kenny Lockhart, Glenn Owens, Marvin Hawkins, Ronald Glasscock, William C. Long, Tommy Hargis, and Ricky Eubanks. Honorary pallbearers will be Mt. Harmony Baptist Men.

Christine Davis Clayton

Christine Davis Clayton, 84, of 5056 Clayton Rd., Rougemont, died Friday, March 4, 2016. Born in Granville County, Mrs. Clayton was the daughter of the late William Oscar and Lola Blalock Davis and wife of the late Alvis Lee Clayton. Mrs. Clayton retired from Murdoch Center and was a lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU and a Sunday School Teacher. She was also preceded in death by her companion, Ervin Oakley.
Mrs. Clayton is survived by her children, Brian Clayton and wife Debbie, of Henderson, Cathy Winstead and husband David, of Timberlake; Blanche Mangum, of Rougemont, William E. Clayton, of Oxford and Cheryl Champion, of Kittrell; one sister, Margaret Daniel, of Hopewell, VA; ten grandchildren, Gary Clayton, Chris Clayton, Nichole Clayton, Kelly Chambers, Brian Winstead, Kyle Winstead, Tony Woodlief, Brad Woodlief, Mystie Gray and Jodi Mangum; and twenty two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3 PM Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Hagar. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 1:30-3 PM, Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church prior to the service and at other times at the home of Blanche Mangum, 152 Cothran Hicks Rd., Rougemont.
