Mary Agnes Pentecost Smith

Mary Agnes Pentecost Smith, 72, of 1031 Providence Road died February, 2, 2016. She was born in Person County to the late John and Sallie Harris Pentecost. Mrs. Smith was also preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Pentecost and one sister, Mabel Buchanan. She was an animal lover, avid gardener, and loved to cook and sew. Mrs. Smith was a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Howard Smith, of the home; three children, Kim Welch and husband Linwood, of Timberlake, Karl Smith and wife Sandy, and Joel Smith, and wife Cindy, both of Roxboro; four sisters, Sybil Wooten, Rachel Parrott, Alice Wilborn and husband R.B., all of Roxboro, and Carolyn Miller, and husband Ira, of Durham; one sister-in-law, Nellie Pentecost; five grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Sarah Smith, Kate Smith, Joshua Welch, and Matthew Welch.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, February, 5, 2016 at Providence Baptist Church by Rev. Dennis McDonald and Rev. Raymond Wooten. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6:30-8:00 PM Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Providence Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Welch, Matthew Welch, and Donald Parrott, Tommy Pentecost, Ronnie Henderson, and Merritt Buchanan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 1319 Virgilina Road, Roxboro, NC 27573.
Wanda Jo Aiken
Born: 06/01/1948 Durham County, NC
Died: 01/15/2016 and resided in Roxboro, NC
Wanda Jo Aiken, 67, died Friday, January 15, 2016 after an extended illness. She was born in Durham County to the late W.D. and Elizabeth Clayton Aiken. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother, Jimmy Aiken. Ms. Aiken graduated from Northern Durham High School and later retired from Northern Telecommunications. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are one daughter, Carmen Carden, of Roxboro; and one granddaughter, Savannah Davis; special cousin, Debbie Mangum, of Roxboro; lifelong best friend, Linda Cash, of Rougemont; and many loving friends that were her family.
A memorial service will be held 7:00 P.M. Thursday, January 21, 2016 at the Brooks and White Chapel with Dr. M. David Chambers officiating. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service.

Beth Lanier Knott

Today the family of Beth Lanier Knott takes time to give thanks for her life and her love.
Beth was born in Richmond, VA to Samuel Frederick Lanier and Elizabeth Lanier Sullivan. She grew up in Oxford, NC and after high school graduation, enrolled in a two-year business course at East Carolina University. She was then married to Stephen Edwin Knott, and there were fortunate to have fifty-two years together.
Beth was a bookkeeper at Community Pharmacy Services in Roxboro for over twenty years. She enjoyed reading, and loved playing bridge until health problems prevented her from doing so. She had many back problems, and later fought an amazing battle with the effects of COPD and heart failure. She constantly worked at staying as healthy as possible in order to have more time with her family.
She treasured each of her daughters: Lynn Knott Coates, Stacey Knott Paith and Ashley Knott Douma. "Nana Knott" also adored her five grandchildren: Sara Elizabeth Coates, Noah Thomas Paith, Stephen Joseph Paith, Jackson Lanier Douma and Christopher Jordan Douma. Other loved family members include: two brothers, Thomas F. Lanier and Jerry W. Lanier; one sister, Nancy H. Wagnon, and three sons-in-law: Steve M. Coates, J. Scott Paith and Donovan P. Douma.
The family extends special thanks to Dr. Tom Long, Hospice Nurse Crystal Martin and in-home care-givers: Penny McKeithan, Carrie Shull, Lydia Royster and Lucia Strickland for the wonderful care they provided for Mom.
A special "thank you" is also extended to the following friends who were so supportive and invaluable in their help with meals for Mom (and Dad) for many months, and who will serve as honorary pallbearers: Peggy Baker, Kay Bugnar, Sandy Dunevant, Ellen Harris, Linda Masten, Becky Oakley, Greta Paith, Jane Phillips, Susan Satterfield, Carol Lee Talbert and Carolyn Williams.
A memorial service to celebrate and honor the life of Beth Lanier Knott will be held at Roxboro Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 16, at 11:00AM. Visitation will be held in the fellowship hall at Roxboro Baptist Church prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:45AM.

Charles Terrell Howerton "Skeeter"

Charles Terrell Howerton "Skeeter", 60, of 139 Sleepy Hollow Lane, died Saturday, March 5, 2016. Mr. Howerton was born in Durham County and was the son of the late Donald Ray George and Barbara Jean Mason Howerton, who survives; he is also preceded in death by his adopted father, Fred Howerton. He was a member of Gateway Baptist Church. He was retired from NAPA Walker Auto Parts as a manager, after many years of service and various positions throughout the company.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Howerton is survived by his wife, Fay Wood Howerton, of the home; one goddaughter, Lyn Wilkins, of Roxboro; one brother, Freddie Howerton and wife Teresa, of Durham; one sister, Ruth Coltrane and husband John, of Wake Forest; several in-laws; several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.
The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 PM Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Gateway Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at Gateway Baptist Church by the Rev. Phillip Adams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Freddie Howerton, Ray Hayes, Phillip Clements, Chris Holder, Donnie Moore, Jr., and Bobby Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be John Coltrane, Adam Howerton and Peter Taylor.

Clayton Shull
Born: 07/05/1925 Burke County, North Carolina
Died: 02/27/2016 and resided in Roxboro, North Carolina
Mr. Clayton Shull died Saturday, February 27, 2016. He was an honest and trustworthy man full of love and of pride. He owned and operated Shull's Garage for 58 years where he worked with his son Randy. He took pride in his work and helping those in need.
He most enjoyed time spent with his family. He often said that if he knew grandchildren would have been this much fun, he would have had those first.
He had a passion for cooking. He is known far and wide for his pinto beans and cornbread. He created traditions for his family and friends such as New Year's Day lunch at the shop, Shull's Garage, consisting of black eyed peas and potato soup and corn bread of course. Breakfast Christmas Eve morning was another of his cherished traditions he enjoyed with his family. This is when he had roses delivered to his loving wife, one for each year of marriage and an extra for him. He would always say, "One for me!"
He hosted the first ARC Fish Fry in Person County. This event was held at the shop, Shull's Garage.
He owned and drove his own race car for years. He enjoyed racing at Person County Speedway and other nearby race tracks. Once he retired from driving, he enjoyed watching Nascar on Sunday afternoons.
He was a member of New Brook UMC for over forty years.
He was born July 5, 1925 to the late Dorsey and Frances Shull. He had five brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by, the love of his life, his loving wife of 66 years, Estelle Carr Shull. They were married December 24, 1949.
In addition to his wife, he had one daughter Donna Shull Harris and husband Gary, and one son Randy Clayton Shull and wife Lindy.
He was blessed with four grandchildren, Michelle Poole and husband Scottie, Tina Evans and husband Jamie, Amanda Green and husband John, and Alice Pittenger and husband Brandon.
He was even more blessed with seven great grandchildren, Garrett Poole, Addison Pittenger, Jackson Green, Gracen Pittenger, Walker Green, Malana Evans, and Kennedy Green.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday March 1, 2016 at the Brooks and White Chapel with the Rev. Tyler Daniels and the Rev. Hal Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7:00-8:30 PM Monday, February 29, 2016 at Brooks and White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Brian Holeman, Steve Bray, Reggie Carr, Randy Shull, Lacy Compton, Rickie Humphries, Carl Carr, and Terry Gentry. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Huff, Joe Shull, Darrell Shull, James Roberson, Jimmy Slaughter, Gary Royster, Tommy Bowes, Pete Clayton, Calvin Oliver, Pete Whitt.

Brent James McCracken

Died: 02/09/2016 and resided in Roxboro, NC
Brent James McCracken, 52, died Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Duke University Hospital after a long battle with kidney and vascular disease. He was born in St. Lawrence County, New York to the late Charles Walter McCracken and Louise Maye Roberts. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Rodney McCracken, Nancy Jane McCracken, Norma June McCracken, Danny Lee McCracken, and Brian Timothy McCracken. Over the years, he worked at Loxcreen, Treyburn Country Club, and Medical Supply Store of Durham.
Surviving are two children, Mary McCracken Flores and husband, Oscar, of Hurdle Mills and James Thomas McCracken, of Roxboro; four brothers, Harvey Glen Strate, of TX, Randy McCracken, of Roxboro, David McCracken, of FL, and Teddy McCracken, of FL; four sisters, Janice Weber, of Roxboro, Elizabeth Marcellus, Penny Watson, and Katey Blodgett, all of NY; and four granddaughters, Angela Flores, Hayleigh-Jane Flores, Yessenia Flores, and Destiny McCracken.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
