Raymond Newman (Bud) Cobb age 59 of 861 Mise Road died Sunday morning at his home. He was born in Rockingham County to the late Louis Raymond Cobb and Mary Webster Cobb. Bud was a member of the Beulah Baptist Church in Yanceyville. He was employed by the US Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier after his retirement from Tobacco Farming.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Barrett Cobb of the home, his daughter, Emily Cobb Russell and his son, Aaron Newman Cobb, 2 grandchildren, Brendan Newman Hoback and Mical Cole Russell all of Yanceyville; one brother, John Louis Cobb of Greensboro, and three sisters, Evelyn C. Oakley and Peggy C. Briggs both of Leasburg, and Barbara L. Cobb of Yanceyville.
The family will receive friends 7 PM to 8:30 PM Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other time at the home.
The funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at the Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Buddy Hall officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery located off of Mise Road, Yanceyville.
Pallbearers will be John Kelly Cobb, Mike Cobb, Mark Cobb, Nick Briggs, Joey Lynch, Sam Wilson, Sr., Joel Lynch, Horace Carter, and Sam Wilson, II.

Cavrel Fuller Saunders, age 90, of 307 High Street, died Thursday, March 26, 2009 at his home. He was born in Clover, VA and was the son of the late Lee Richard and Sallie Fannie Lloyd Saunders. He retired from Taylor’s Printing after 37 years of employment and had worked two years at the Courier-Times Newspaper prior to his employment at Taylor’s Printing. He was a US Army Sergeant during WWII. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Johnnie Gertrude Owen Saunders, of the home; one son, Michael Fuller Saunders and wife Vickie, of Midlothian, VA.
Funeral services will be held 3 PM Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial will follow in the Burchwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Steve Saunders, Junior Martin, Carl Owen, Harry Hodges, Jimmy Allen and Kenneth Hicks. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible Class of Grace United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 PM Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Julian C. Horton Jr.

Julian C. Horton, Jr., 85, of 632 Frank St., died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Durham County, Mr. Horton was the son of the late Julian C. and Romba Roberts Horton. Mr. Horton worked 49 and half years with the NC Department of Transportation and was a member of Brooksdale United Methodist Church.
Mr. Horton is survived by his wife, Pearl Wade Horton; four children, Don W. Horton, of Durham, Greg R. Horton, Vickie H. Carver, and Tim L. Horton, all of Roxboro; one sister, Lee H. Ludwick, of Charlotte; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Beth Horton.
Graveside services will be held 2 PM Friday at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church by the Rev. Philip Chryst. Visitation will be held 7-8 PM Thursday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, John Horton, Adam Horton, Casey Horton, David Gentry, Chris Nowell and nephew J.W. Chambers.

Charles L. Edwards Jr.

Charles L. Edwards, Jr., 71, of 507 Hickory Flats Rd., died Wednesday, March 25, 2009. Born in Watauga Co., Mr. Edwards was the son of the late Charles L. and Hazel Mayes Edwards and Ruth Parks Edwards. Mr. Edwards graduated from Harding High School in 1955. He was a retired truck driver with Teamster’s Local #71. Mr. Edwards was a former member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club and a deacon of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. He was a current member of Lea Bethel Baptist Church.
Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife Shirley Horne Edwards; three sons, Charles L. Edwards, III and wife Lori B. Edwards, of Leasburg, Michael L. Edwards and wife Monica K. Edwards, of Statesville and Jeffrey L. Edwards and wife Rachelle R. Edwards, of Concord; one sister, Katherine E. Steele, of Columbia, SC; six grandchildren, Charles Ryan Edwards, Victoria Nichole Edwards, Daniel Lee Edwards, Ashley Lauren Edwards, Christa Lauren Edwards and Caleb Lewis Edwards.

Thomas Marshall Humphries

Thomas Marshall Humphries, 79 of the Bethel Hill Community, peacefully succumbed at his home on Monday, March 23, 2009.
Mr. Humphries is survived by his wife Lavern Buchanan Humphries, of 52 years married in South Boston, VA. Also surviving are his four children Carolyn Humphries Gibson and her husband Larry Gibson of Commerce, GA, Danny Humphries of Burlington, NC, Mary L. Massey of Roxboro, NC and Thomas Marshall Humphries, Jr. and his wife, Leigh N. Humphries, of Oxford, NC; six grandchildren, Danielle G. Cheek and her husband Kevin, James Thomas “T.J.” Massey, Candace Keener and husband Stuart, Daniel Humphries, Randi Satterfield and Thomas Will Humphries and one great-grandchild, Haden Cheek.
Mr. Humphries was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and William B. Humphries, his brothers, George E. Pully, William H. Pully, Robert Pully, and W.B. Humphries, and his sisters, Edith W. Pully, Katherine Bowles, Louise H. Cottingham, Alice H. West, and Carol Leigh Humphries.
Mr. Humphries was born on September 1, 1929 in Person County. He was a 1947 graduate of Bethel Hill High School.
As a Korean War Veteran, Mr. Humphries served for two years active duty in the position of PFC first line defense in the Company A 30th Infantry Regiment. During his time of service, he was wounded and received the distinguished Purple Heart Award. Following his active duty, Mr. Humphries also served with the Army Reserve for two years with Battery C 113th FA BN NCNG.
Mr. Humphries attended the Danville Technical Institute in Virginia for two years receiving his certification in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.
During his years in the work force, Mr. Humphries was initially employed by Bradsher Heating & AC Company and then Doug Whitt’s Heating and Air.
Having grown up in the Bethel Hill Community, Mr. Humphries was an active life-long member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Humphries loved his church and church family, and during his years of membership, he served as an ordained deacon, choir member, and served with various committees.
Mr. Humphries was also a member of the Bethel Hill Ruritan Club for many years.
Funeral services will be held 11AM Wednesday at Bethel Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Jason Evans. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-8:30 PM Tuesday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Phillip Thaxton, Gerald Burton, Joe Jacobs, Pat Woody, Lynn Brandon and Jim Currier. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Cannon, Phillip Reams, and Tim Harris and Mr. Humphries’ Sunday School Class members.

William Bernard Nance

Died: 03/23/2009 and resided in Timberlake, NC
William Bernard Nance, 66, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at his home. He was born in Lawrence Co., OH to the late George E. Nance and Elizabeth Haney Nance. Mr. Nance was an electrician for the Dayton Malleable in Ironton, OH.
Surviving are his two children, Dean Nance of Ironton, Ohio and Chrysandra Cremeens of Ironton, Ohio; one brother, Don Nance of Michigan and one sister, Kay Foster of Texas and three grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Helena Primitive Baptist Church from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
