Berley Berry Gentry, 100, of Abbotswood Retirement Center in Greensboro, died Saturday, August 8, 2015. Born in Person County, he is the son of the late W. H. and Lelia Chandler Gentry and husband of the late Nannie Lue Evans Gentry and Josephine Hall Gentry. Mr. Gentry was of the Person County community for ninety-five years and he owned and operated Roxboro Plumbing and Heating. Mr. Gentry served in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the Person County Masonic Lodge and Person County Shrine Club. He was also a founding member of the Golden K. Mr. Gentry was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for over seventy years.
Surviving are his two children: Lynn Winstead and husband Arthur, of Greensboro, and B. Berry Gentry II, of Chapel Hill; one sister, Virginia Gentry Fortner, of Kannapolis; two grandchildren: Jeff Gentry Winstead (Abigail), and Brian Edward Winstead (Lauren); three great-grandchildren: Rachael Winstead, Jacob Winstead and Nathan Winstead; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 2 PM Monday at Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Dion Loving and the Dr. Pat Cronin. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 1-2 PM Monday at the church prior to the service.

Rev. Thomas Given Holtsclaw

Died: 08/09/2015 and resided in Roxboro, NC
The Reverend Thomas Given Holtsclaw, born on October 4, 1938, in Charleston, WV, passed from death unto life eternal on August 9, 2015. He was the seventh of eight children born to Cecil David and Della Burke Holtsclaw.
At age seventeen, Tom gave his life to Jesus Christ, and at the age of 20, he experienced the call of God to full-time Christian ministry. Tom graduated from The University of Charleston (WV) and Duke University Divinity School. He served churches for ten years in the West Virginia Methodist Conference, and thirty-two years in the North Carolina United Methodist Conference. While pastoring, Tom served on many Conference committees, including the Board of Evangelism, and Board of Missions, the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, and the Global Committee on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns. Tom was also elected as a delegate to General Conference for three quadrennium and to Jurisdictional Conference for four quadrennium. He served the sixty-five United Methodist churches within five counties of New Bern District for six years as Superintendent.
Tom frequently took groups on tours of the Holy Land, the journeys of St. Paul in Greece, Turkey, and Italy, and the Wesley Heritage Tour in England and Wales.
After retirement in 2001 from Jarvis Memorial UMC in Greenville, Tom served nine churches as Interim Pastor, including an extended appointment at Aldersgate UMC in Durham, NC. Since 2011, Tom has served as Pastor Emeritus of the Concord UMC in Roxboro, NC.
Tom is survived by his teenage sweetheart, and wife of fifty-seven years, Jan Mason Holtsclaw; their daughter, Andrea Holtsclaw Malpass (Chris) of Goldsboro; sons, Timothy Allen Holtsclaw (Gwen) of Fayetteville and Jason Thomas Holtsclaw (Amy) of Asheville; grandsons, Christopher Barrett Malpass (Linda) and John-Taylor Malpass of Goldsboro; brother, Mark E. Holtsclaw; sisters, Pauline Shands and Susan Brown; brother-in-law Rev. John A. Mason, and sister-in-law, Joy M. Whitlock; as well as many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Lacy Williams and Bob Zippay.
One of Tom's greatest loves was music. He began playing the piano at age ten, when a professor came to his home to give lessons. He taught himself to play guitar in his early teenage years. Through the years, he sang as a soloist, in duets, trios, and quartets. He was a part of the trio group "Parson, Parson and Friend" when he pastored First UMC in Rockingham, and the quartet "The Presiding Elders", which consisted of four colleagues, during his years as district superintendent, and on through many years. They sang in various churches, as well as for district and conference events, and loved entertaining one January at Epworth by the Sea on St. Simons Inland, GA.
The church will be open for a silent viewing for two hours beginning at 12:00 PM Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Following the worship/funeral service and the committal service, you are cordially invited to go from the Cemetery to the Concord UMC Fellowship Hall to visit with the family and friends during a reception.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Concord UMC in Roxboro, NC on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at 2:00 PM, with the Reverend Karl Neuschaefer, Dr. Roger V. Elliott and the Reverend David Harrington presiding. Interment will follow the service at Concord UMC Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Rev. David Banks, Rev. Gray Southern, Rev. Randall Innes, Rev. Leonard Fairley, Rev. David Woodhouse, Rev. Gerald Thomas, Jason Thomas Holtsclaw, and Robert Chris Malpass. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mr. Wilbur Brann, Rev. Stan Brown, Dr. Jefferson Bulla, Mr. G. Lee Caroll, Rev. Joe Forbes, Mr. George Girdwood, Rev. George Johnson, Mr. Tommy Lawrence, Rev. Henry Lovelace, Mr. Keith McLester, Mr. Jay Neville, Dr. James Owen, Mr. Tom Parrish, Rev. Caswell Shaw, Mr. Frank Thigpen, and Mr. Lacy Winstead.

Ruby Aiken Hill

Ruby Aiken Hill, 91, of 12908 HWY 501, Rougemont, died Sunday, August 16, 2015. Mrs. Hill was the daughter of the late Andrew H. and Luetta Wheeler Aiken and wife of the late Jasper Hall Hill. Mrs. Hill retired from Liggett & Myers and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Eula A. Gates and Irene A. Roberts and one brother, Hubert A. Aiken.
Mrs. Hill is survived by her daughter, Sybil L. Hill of the home; her son, Barry J. Hill and wife Alice, of Shelby; one sister, Burma Oakley, of Rougemont; one granddaughter, Erin H. Carter and husband Paul, of Shelby.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at Brooks & White Chapel by the Elder Bobby Daughtry. Burial will follow in the Aiken Blalock Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-7:30 PM, Tuesday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Gerald Aiken, Bill Aiken, Chip Aiken, Jackey Day, Cody Cash, and Marty Cash. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Roberts and John Bowen.

Clara Jeanette Nichols Phillips

Clara Jeannette Nichols Phillips, 90, of 1453 Newton Pleasant Loop Rd., Hurdle Mills, died Monday, August 24, 2015 at her residence. Born in Durham County, Mrs. Phillips was the daughter of the late Joe Bunn and Maude Ann Rigsbee Nichols and wife of the late Thomas Theodore Phillips, Sr. Mrs. Phillips retired after 40 years with Liggett and Myers and was a charter member of Shady Grove Freewill Baptist Church. She attended Clement Baptist Church. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lori Cash and great-grandchildren Andrew Michael Miller and Austin Curtis Phillips.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her daughter, Janet Cherly Gentry, of Hurdle Mills and her son, Tommy Phillips and wife Kay, of Hurdle Mills; seven grandchildren, Michelle Miller, Christy Jordan, Ted Phillips, Jamie Cash, Heather Martin, Curt Phillips and Jody Stone; and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11AM Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Clement Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Bowes. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Durham with the Rev. Donnie Cash officiating. Visitation will be held 6-7:30 PM, Wednesday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Brad Jacobs Milam

Brad Jacob Milam, 51, of 91 Amber Rd., Timberlake, died Friday, September 4, 2015. Born in Lorain Co., OH, Mr. Milam was the son of the late Billy Saunders Milam and Ella Mae Akers Milam, who survives, of Princeton, WV. Mr. Milam served in the National Guard and was a self-employed tool salesman with Matco. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Milam is survived by his wife, Donna Jean Bailey Milam; two children, Amanda Ayers and husband Tom, of Apex and T.J. Milam, of Timberlake; two brothers, Chris Milam and wife Debbie of Wendell and Chad Milam, of Lorain, OH; one grandson, Jake Ayers.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Monday, September 7, 2015, at Gateway Baptist Church by the Rev. Phillip Adams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 7-8:30 PM, Sunday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Billy "Bill" Joe Champion

Billy "Bill" Joe Champion, age 69, of 177 Moss Creek Drive, died Monday, July 27, 2015 at his home. He was born in Moore County, NC, to the late John Elton Champion and Ariena Ann Jonker Champion. Mr. Champion loved both playing and listening to bluegrass. He was also of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is his wife, Joan Clayton Champion, of the home; four children: Lyn Ivey (Dave), of Charlotte, Tonya Kelsey (John), of Maplewood, MN, Stephanie Chambers (Wendell), of Roxboro, and Jason Chambers, of Roxboro; two brothers: Jimmy Champion, of Perry, FL, and David Champion (Anna), of Bunn; two sisters: Rena Dillman (Gene), of Louisburg, and Debbie McCloud (Billy), of Youngsville; ten grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Brooks and White Chapel. The family will receive friends at other times at the home.
Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Ron Pruitt. Interment will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
