Elizabeth Hathaway Cates Hicks

Elizabeth Cates Hicks, formerly of 1270 Satterfield Road, Hurdle Mills, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Born on the family farm in Person County on March 21, 1924, Mrs. Hicks was the daughter of the late James Columbus and Annie Hester Cates. Preceding Elizabeth in death are her husband, Hubert Merlyn Hicks; her siblings, Sue Long, Hester Cates, James Cates, J.A. Cates, Louise Day, and Hugh Cates, She graduated from East Carolina Teachers College and retired from Person County Schools having taught at Hurdle Mills, Helena, and Northern Junior High. Mrs. Hicks was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Hicks is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Hicks and husband Greg, Sue Sherman and husband Cliff, all of Hurdle Mills; her sister, Annie Thompson Cates of Roxboro; three grandchildren, Paul Hicks and wife Betsy, Cliff Boyd Sherman and wife Sara, and Matthew Sherman and wife Ashley; three great grandchildren, Henry Sherman and twins, Deacon and Cora Sherman. Also surviving is one sister-in-law, Pearl Hicks Ferrell.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church by the Rev. Donald Daniel. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2:00 -3:00 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Cates, C.W. Boyette, Paul Hatley, Ronnie Epps, Norman Boyette, and Ray Moore.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a church or charity of one's choice.
Merita Faye Gooch New

Died: 05/06/2015 and resided in Roxboro, North Carolina
Merita Faye Gooch New age 75 formerly of Evelyn Day Road died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Person Memorial Hospital in the extended care unit. She was born in Durham County. Mrs. New was a member of Faith Independent Baptist Church.
Survivors include her five children, Teresa Owen, of Hillsborough, Sharon New of Wilmington, Katie Berry of Creedmoor, Paul New of Timberlake, and Mark New of Roxboro, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
The gravesidel service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Person Memorial Cemetery.
Harold Thomas Brooks

Died: 07/04/2015 and resided in Timberlake, NC
Harold Thomas Brooks, 86, died July 4th, 2015, at the Hock Family Pavilion. Born and raised in Timberlake, he was the son of the late Thomas Gold Brooks and Maude Meadows Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a co-proprietor of T.G. Brooks Company and was a Korean War veteran. He was committed to his community through volunteering for a variety of organizations. A few of those organizations including Piedmont Community College Presidents Club, Person County Board of Adjustments and Person Memorial Hospital Trustees. Additionally, he was instrumental in the establishment the of Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department and all activities involving Helena. He was a long time member of Helena United Methodist Church.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Anne Rogers Brooks and his brother Bobby Lee Brooks. He leaves behind two sons and a daughter; William (Bill) Harold Brooks of Timberlake, NC, Roy Thomas Brooks and wife Pamela of Timberlake, NC, Anne Marie Brooks and husband Mark Tau of Spartanburg, SC. Four grandchildren, Brittany Brooks Burd (Blake), Carrie Brooks Kaschak (AJ), Lauren Elizabeth Brooks and William Gold Brooks; Two great grandchildren, Camden Thomas Burd and Kendall Paige Kaschak; his sister, Betty Brooks Royster and husband Elvyn of Timberlake; his sister-in-law Maxine Harper Brooks; his nephews Wayne Brooks and Mark Brooks ( Debby) and his nieces Angela Scott and Diane Robinson (Jeff) and many other loving relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, July 6, 2015 at Helena Methodist Church with Rev. Lisa Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Earl Clayton, Mark Brooks, Rick Chambers, Larry Oakley, Tony Gentry, Ronald Foushee, Randy Cash, and Snowball Clayton.

Samuel Douglas Barnwell

Samuel Douglas Barnwell, 61, of 674 Ridgeville Rd., Prospect Hill, died Thursday, July 2, 2015. Born in Alamance County, Mr. Barnwell was the son of the late Roger Hassell Barnwell. Mr. Barnwell retired from AKG in Mebane and was of the Baptist faith. He loved woodworking and NASCAR.
Mr. Barnwell is survived by his mother, Blanch Blalock Barnwell; his brother, Barry Wayne Barnwell and wife Peggy, of Prospect Hill; his sister, Mary Jacqueline Barnwell, of Graham; two nieces, Tina Rice and Shelby Brown; one nephew, Scotty Barnwell; and one great-nephew.
Graveside services will be held 4 PM, Sunday, July 5, 2015, at Cooper Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-3 PM, Sunday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Scotty Barnwell, David Brown, Kermit Oakes, Mack McIntyre, Dwight Oakley, and Ronnie Lunsford.

Joseph Alexander Gilchrist Sr.

Joseph Alexander Gilchrist, Jr. died Thursday, June 18, 2015. He was born in Durham County and was the son of the late Joseph Alexander Gilchrist, Sr. and Gwendolyn Sula Davis Gilchrist. Mr. Gilchrist was also preceded in death by one brother, Frank Gilchrist. He served in the Navy then retired from the Fire Department in Durham, after 17 years of service. Mr. Gilchrist was an avid hunter and fisherman and also enjoyed long range shooting. He was a member of Warren's Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving is his wife of over 34 years, Rose Broers Gilchrist; one sister, Laura Shepard and husband David, of Dallas, TX; and one nephew, Jesse Henley, of Euless, TX.
Visitation will be held 6:30-8:00 PM Monday, June 22, 2015 at Brooks and White Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Warrens Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Anne Sims and Rev. Ed Boggie.

Dora Martin Crabtree

Dora Martin Crabtree, age 88, of 402 South Third Street, died Thursday, August 6, 2015 at her home. Mrs. Crabtree is preceded in death by her husband, Vance Harding Crabtree, Sr., and two sons, Donnie Crabtree, and Roger Crabtree.
Surviving are her four sons: Lanny Crabtree and Vance Harding Crabtree, Jr., of the home, Howard Crabtree, of Prospect Hill, and Barry Crabtree, of Elon; one daughter, Linda C. Heath, of Little Elm, TX; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:30 Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Brooks & White Chapel and other times at the home.
Funeral Service will be 3:00 PM Sunday, August 9, 2015 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Rick Webster. Burial will follow in the Norris Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Crabtree's grandchildren.
