John Wesley Jones
Born: 01/14/1916 Person County, NC
Died: 12/10/2012 and resided in Roxboro, NC
John Wesley Jones, beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012. He was 96.
A Person County native, he was born in the Timberlake area of the county. He was one of seven children -- the oldest son -- of John H. and Lula P. Jones. Until a recent illness, he had lived in the Pine Lakes home he and his wife, Joyce, built in 1957. Joyce preceded him in death in 2003, and he had lived alone since then, being unwilling to leave his familiar surroundings, including his workshop, yard and garden where he had spent so many happy hours.
John Wesley worked for Export Leaf Tobacco Company for more than 50 years, most of the time as a buyer on markets from Georgia to Kentucky. His favorite was the Roxboro market, and even after he retired, he would go down to the warehouse to see how the sale was going.
At the beginning of World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy and was a First Class Petty Officer. He served as an airplane mechanic, primarily in Corpus Christie, Texas. His service and patriotism were an inspiration to his granddaughter, Cera Tillett Benbow, who chose to attend the U.S. Naval Academy and is now a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
A life-long member of Brooksdale United Methodist Church, John Wesley served nearly every office in the church, faithfully attended the Key Taylor Sunday School class and sang in the choir, which was directed by his wife, Joyce. He stirred stew, painted walls, put up Christmas decorations and did many other tasks with his dear friends and family at Brooksdale.
Surviving are his daughters, Harriett Tillett and husband, Ben of Roxboro and Ramona DuBose and husband Alan of Raleigh; granddaughters Cera Benbow and husband Devon of Pensacola, Fla., and Christen Tillett of Roxboro; grandsons Wesley DuBose and Elliott DuBose of Raleigh; sister, Emma Bailey Hicks of Burlington; numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country. He was very close to his extended family, including many cousins. Among them are Carl B. Jones and his wife, Peggy, who lived next door to John Wesley and Joyce for more than 50 years.
The family also wishes to thank the wonderful family who took such great care of John Wesley in his later years, allowing him to stay in his own home. They are Margie Loftis and her husband Earl; her daughter Christie Carver and her husband Jimmy Carver; and Christie’s daughter, Stephanie James.
