Arnold Dienstfrei Jr.

Arnold Dienstfrei, Jr., age 85, of Roxboro, died peacefully Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Duke University Hospital. Mr. Dienstfrei was born in Montgomery County Alabama and resided there for most of his life. He was the son of the late Arnold Dienstfrei, Sr. and Rosalee Bryant Dienstfrei and husband of the late Betty Gray Dienstfrei. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Geraldine Potosky. Mr. Dienstfrei was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He had retired as Vice President of Budget and Tax at Alabama Farm Bureau Insurance after 27 years of service and ended his career as Comptroller at Investortools, Inc. in Chicago. Mr. Dienstfrei was an enthusiastic believer in Jesus Christ and served in various church capacities including reaching the status of Elder. He was also a past member of the Lions Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Graydon and husband Stuart of Milton and Susan Lyon and husband Marvin of Roswell, GA; two sons, Thomas "Tad" Dienstfrei and wife Dawn of Littleton, CO and Lee Dienstfrei and wife Tammy of Milton. He was loved dearly by his eighteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Keith Murray. Burial will follow at a later date at Montgomery Memorial Cemetery in Montgomery, Alabama.
The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 PM Saturday, prior to the service at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of Judy Graydon, 480 Rock Creek Dr. Milton.
Harry Clay Black

Harry Clay Black, 79, of 156 Dorothy Brooks Ln., Roxboro, died Thursday, January 19, 2012 at his residence. Born in Wake County, Mr. Black was the son of the late John Guion and Catherine Lowe Black and husband of the late Norma Coleman Black. Mr. Black was a retired mechanic and of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Black is survived by his children, Richard Black and wife Theresa, of Pickens, SC, Kenneth Black and wife Judy, of Hurdle Mills and Deborah Black, and fiance Richard Lutz; four grandchildren, Codie Hite and husband Everett, Ethan Black, Kevin Black, and Kyle Buchanan and wife Leann; one great-grandchild, Kyle Buchanan, Jr.
Visitation will be held 6:30-8 PM, Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home. A memorial ride will be held at a later date.
James "SONNY" Harry Solomon

James Harry "Sonny" Solomon, 70, of 30 Tarheel Lane, Semora, NC died Friday, January 20, 2012 after a long courageous battle with cancer with his loving family by his side. Sonny was born in Danville, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Clyde Solomon and Mary Osborne Solomon; seven siblings, Claude Solomon, Margie Cole, Helen Andrews, John Solomon, Bobby Solomon, David Solomon, and Louise Woody.
He was retired from the Semora Vol. Fire Department where he had served as past fire chief, he was a past member of the Semora Ruritan Club, he was a Superintendent for Barnhill Contractors, he coached youth baseball, he was an avid Tar Heel Fan and golfer. He loved NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhart, Sr. fan; Sonny was a member of the Lebanon Christian Church and a U. S. Navy Veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Brinkley Solomon of the home; five children, Jeannie S. Harris and husband, Michael of Roxboro, Patricia S. Berkley and husband, Jeff of Franklinton, James H. Solomon, Jr. and wife, Dawn of Semora, Matthew R. Solomon of Columbia, SC, and Amanda S. Mark and husband, Anton of Cary; 10 grandchildren who all called him Deedle: Justin and Jacob Reaves, Christina and Virginia Harris, Kristen and Courtney Berkley, Brooke and Devin Solomon, Paul and Madeline Mark; one great grandchild, Aleah Berkley; three sisters, Janie S. Jones of Roxboro, Evelyn S. Cole of Essex, MD, and Ann S. Martin of Carolina Beach.
The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro, NC and other times at his home in Semora, NC
The funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Monday, January 23, 2012 at the Lebanon Christian Church in Semora, NC with the Rev. John Upton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Butch Blackard, Wayne Barker, Wesley Yarbrough, Harold Blackard, Jim Lockheart, Jack Pointer and Jimmy Harris.

Elizabeth Newell Humphries

Elizabeth Newell Humphries age 82 formerly of Newell Drive died Sunday morning January 22, 2012 at the Roxboro Nursing Center. She was born in Person County to the late Bruce B. Newell and Cornelia Sample Newell. Mrs. Humphries was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Humphries and brothers Henry O. Newell, Sr. and William Newell, Sr. She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a past member of the Roxboro Women's Club and loved to play bridge.
Surviving are four children and their spouses, Tommy & Sally Humphries of Roxboro, Bill & Evie Humphries of Matthews, Bruce & Ellen Humphries of Clemmons, Tim and Betty Humphries Bowes of Raleigh; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one brother, Dr. Bruce Newell of Lake Wales, Florida.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Long Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Allen officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.
Honorary Pallbearers will be grandsons: Ben Humphries, Brian Humphries, William Humphries, Matt Humphries, and Jacob Bowes.
The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mary Arnold Stephens

Mary Arnold Stephens, 75 of 7115 US Hwy. 158 East, Leasburg, died Sunday January 29, 2012. Miss Stephens was born in Durham County daughter of the late of Voss Mack Stephens and the late Annie Dixon Stephens. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister Lucille S. Wells and one brother William Buford Stephens, Sr. Mary Arnold loved the outdoors and playing softball. She was a member of Leasburg United Methodist Church and attended Lea's Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her special friend Lynne Bailey of the home, one brother J. Mack Stephens of Charlotte and one Sister-In-Law Vera Stephens of Danville, Va. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends Tuesday January 31, 2012 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Graveside rites will be held Wednesday February 1, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the Leasburg Community Cemetery.

Jerry Wayne Clayton

Jerry Wayne Clayton, age 69, of Oxford Rd., died Friday, February 3, 2012. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late Jim and Jenny Long Clayton. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Janelle Clark. Mr. Clayton had retired from American Tobacco Company. He was of the Methodist Faith.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Lou Clayton of the home; four children, Tammy C. Tuck and husband Bradley of Timberlake, Sammy J. Clayton and wife Karen of Timberlake, Kimberly C. Slaughter and husband Carl of Semora, and Timothy R. Clayton also of Semora; one brother, Jimmy Clayton of Roxboro; five grandchildren, Cody Slaughter, Callie Tuck, Katie Slaughter, Jenna Clayton, and Caleb Tuck.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Barry Chambers and the Rev. Ross Thompson. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jessie Duncan, Wade Stone, Carlton Parker, Luther Snead, Joe Hicks, and Dave Milks. Honorary Pallbearers will be Sheldon Clayton and Lathan Hawkins.
The family will receive friends from 1:45 to 2:45 PM Saturday, prior to the service at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church and other times at the home.
