Reverend William Devine Sabiston III

The Reverend William Devine Sabiston III, beloved son, brother, husband, devoted father, grandfather, cherished friend, and dedicated minister in the North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, died on November 7, 2011 following a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born in Wilmington, NC to William Devine Sabiston, Jr. and Thelma Waters Sabiston and was reared in Carthage, NC. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and by his first wife, Peggy Johnson Sabiston, and by his dear friend and “brother he never had “ Willie Edward Leak.
Bill loved life and lived it to the fullest. Bill was an avid Carolina fan and enjoyed attending games. Bill’s humor exceeded all imagination. Even during his illness, this humor remained. Bill was a graduate of Carthage High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke Divinity School at Duke University, and completed post-graduate studies at Yale University and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In 1963 Bill was ordained a Deacon and in 1965 an Elder in the North Carolina Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. For 46 years, Bill faithfully served the following appointments in the North Carolina Annual Conference: Greenville District- Stokes; Burlington District- Salem Chapel ; Raleigh District- Vance Charge and Bethlehem-Shady Grove; Garner-St. Andrews UMC; New Bern-Garber UMC, Wallace- Wallace UMC; Durham-Epworth UMC; Raleigh-Fairmont UMC, North Carolina Annual Conference Staff; Troy-Trinity UMC; Garner- First Methodist Church; Roxboro- Long Memorial UMC; and Roanoke Rapids – First Methodist Church, from which he retired July 1, 2003.
Bill was the founding Minister of Saint Andrews United Methodist Church in Garner. He left a wonderful impact on all the appointments he served, from new buildings, remodeling of existing buildings, to wonderful music programs, and strong Sunday School classes. His presence in the pulpit was inspiring, uplifting, and thought provoking. His sermon titles ranged from “Arichie Bunker meets Jesus Christ” to “Holding onto the Pieces”, inspired by a prominent Surgeon at Duke Medical Center.
On February 15, 1986, Bill and Norma Neil of Durham were married and Norma assumed her role in Bill’s ministry and was a great asset to him. Norma and Bill spent many happy years on their boat, “Rambunctious, ” sailing the North Carolina coast. Just as Bill lived his life, he believed that sailing was more about the journey than the destination.
Surviving Bill are his beloved wife of 26 years, Norma Neil Sabiston, daughter Susan Roberson Sabiston, son William Devine Sabiston, IV “Little Bill” and wife Elizabeth Patrick Sabiston, grandson William Edward Sabiston, and sister Kinsey Sabiston Wily and many cousins.
A visitation will be held, Wednesday November 9, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Epworth United Methodist Church, 3002 Hope Valley Road, Durham, NC.
A Service of the Death and Resurrection for Bill will be conducted in the Duke University Chapel at 2:00 PM on, Thursday November 10, 2011. Service will be conducted by Dr. Charles M. Smith, Dr. F. Belton Joyner Jr., Dr Kermit L. Braswell.
A private Inurnment will take place at a later date in the columbarium at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro, NC.

James Martin Stone Sr.

James Martin Stone, Sr. 71 of 324 North Main Street, died Thursday November 10, 2011. Born in Person County to the late James Thomas Stone and the late Annie Gates Stone. He was retired from Boddie Noell Enterprises as a Regional Service Supervisor. He served on the Roxboro City Council for Fourteen years and served in the Army National Guard. He was a member and past President of the Roxboro Exchange club. Mr. Stone was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he was past Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Administration Board, a member of the Methodist Men and served in many other positions in the church.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy "Dot" Irby Stone of the home, one son James Martin Stone, Jr. of Roxboro, one daughter Joy Stone Kendrick & husband Ricky of Roxboro, three brothers George Wesley Stone & wife Carol of Roxboro, Wade Ivey Stone of Durham, Kenneth Dale Stone & wife Rhonda of Roxboro, one sister Suzanne Stone Carver & husband Sam of Roxboro, five grandchildren Jessica M. Stewart, Alease K. Kendrick, C. Dale Kendrick, Jena M. Stone and James Martin Stone III, two great grandchildren Audrey E. Stewart & Natalea R. Kendrick.
The Family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, November 11, 2011 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday 2:00 PM November 12, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ross Thompson. Interment will follow in Burchwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Hicks, Joe Hicks, Ralph Clark, Harry Hodges, Brad Suitt & Sandy Stigall.

John Roy Williford Sr.

John Roy Williford, Sr., 80, of Roxboro, NC passed away peacefully on November 11, 2011, with his family by his side.
Mr. Williford, son of the late Lillie and Lester Williford, was born in the Tally Ho Township in Granville County, NC, on November 21, 1930. He moved with his family to Person County when the government purchased their farm to create Camp Butner during World War II. Mr. Williford was very proud Veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army on active duty during the Korean War. Like his father before him, he was a lifelong tobacco farmer. He was a rural letter carrier for the US Postal Service for 42 years and was nationally recognized with the Million Mile Mailman award for one million accident-free miles on the job. A man of many talents and an endless work ethic, he was proprietor of the Country Corner Store (formerly Long’s Store) and a very active contributor to the Olive Hill community. He was a member of Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Long Williford; his children, Lynn Williford and husband John Gorman of Chapel Hill, NC; Deborah Williford Mitchum and husband Tony of Durham, NC; and John Roy Williford, Jr., and wife Tammy of Roxboro; four grandchildren, Matthew Mitchum, Jonathan Williford, Brittany Williford, and Sarah Williford; and a sister, Nola Williford Day of Roxboro.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Lillian Clark, Ila Mae Daniels, Jennie Howard, Janie Cline, and Celia Kirkman; and brothers Victor Williford, Sr., and William Henderson Williford.
Services will be held 11 am, Monday, November 14, at Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church in Roxboro, NC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors at Brooks and White Funeral Home in Roxboro from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, November 13.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Williford, Matthew Mitchum, Mark Martin, Craig Morrow, Al Taylor, Victor Williford, Jr., Marvin Daniel, and John Cline.

Lila McKee Carver

Died: 11/14/2011 and resided in Roxboro,
Mrs. Lila McKee Carver, age 80, of 222 Thaxton Rd., died Monday, November 14, 2011. Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Hessie McKee and wife of the late J.W. Carver. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Henry McKee and Obie McKee. Mrs. Carver had retired from Tultex Yarns with 49 years of service. She attended Theresa Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Gentry and husband Jackie of Roxboro; one grandson, Jeff Gentry and wife Debra of Rougemont; one granddaughter, Kelly Riggan and husband Daniel of Roxboro; one great-grandson, Jackson Riggan; one great-granddaughter, Addison Gentry; one niece and one nephew.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Person Memorial Cemetery by the Rev. Herbert Brown.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Elder Charles Burch "C.B." Davis, Jr.

Elder Charles Burch "C.B." Davis, Jr. of 1251 Paynes Tavern Rd., died Friday, November 18, 2011. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late Charles Burch Davis, Sr. and Sadie Hawkins Davis. He was also preceded in death by one son, Bobby Davis and one brother Vernon Davis. Mr. Davis had worked as a farmer, at Farmer's Supply for 29 years, and Sherwin Williams. He was an Elder at Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church for 50 years. He had served churches in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and North Carolina. Mr. Davis had been a member of Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church since 1953.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jeanette Grinstead Davis of the home; one daughter, Barbara D. Phipps and husband Ron of Roxboro; three sons, Charles Davis, III and wife Irene of Richmond, VA, Jimmy Davis and wife Faye of Raleigh and Larry Davis and wife Sandy of Roxboro; two sisters, Elva Long of Hurdle Mills and Nancy Satterfield and husband Billy of Roxboro; three brothers, Donald Davis and wife Amy of Roxboro, Clifford Davis and wife Jean of Graham, and Jerry Davis and wife Demetriss of Nashville, TN; one sister-in-law, Harriet Davis of Oak Ridge TN; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Elder Raymond Goad, Elder Jimmy Gray, Elder Marvin Brumfield, and Elder Cleo Roberson. Burial will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Saturday, November 19, 2011 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
