Minnie Harris Grinstead

Died: 11/04/2011 and resided in Hillsborough, NC

Minnie Harris Grinstead, 93, of 205 Lipscomb Grove Church Rd., Hillsborough, died Friday, November 4, 2011. Born in Person County, Mrs. Grinstead was the daughter of the late William Washington and Lelia Jane Wrenn Harris and wife of the late Roy Clifton Grinstead. Mrs. Grinstead retired from Burlington Industries and was a former member of Providence Baptist Church.

Graveside rites will be held 2 PM, Sunday, at Burchwood Cemetery by the Rev. John Pritchard.

Mrs. Grinstead is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Frederick Jackson "Jack" McKee
Born: 08/25/1932 Orange County, NC
Died: 10/08/2011 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Frederick Jackson "Jack" McKee, Sr., died October 8, 2011, at Davis Health Care Center in Wilmington, NC after a courageous fight with cancer. Jack was born August 25, 1932 to the late George R. McKee, Sr. and Maude Gates McKee of Rougemont, NC. He graduated from Oak Ridge Military School and Elon College. He was an insurance agent for 53 years and owned and operated his own premium finance company, Professional Acceptance as well as McKee Insurance Agency. Jack was a member of Brooksdale United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Roxboro where he has been past president. Jack was on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Grange and held the 6th Degree -Order of Ceres. He actively served his community from Rocket Club President to Person Memorial Hospital Doctor Recruitment. He never said no to anyone who needed his help. He proudly served our country in the US Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his daughter, Ann McKee David of Wilmington; his son, Frederick Jackson "Rick" McKee, Jr., of Roxboro; his grandchildren, Lindsey, Kelly and Hope McKee and Jackson and Clay David; and his sister, Peggy Brown, of Raleigh.

Funeral services will be held 11AM Monday at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Charles Owens and the Rev. Seong-Il Eom. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 PM Sunday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Carl Pearce, Milton Smith, Al Cole, Lacy Winstead, Willard Flintom, and Evan Luther. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Roxboro.

The family would like to thank the staff at Davis Health Care Center and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their loving care and compassion. They loved and cared for him like family and they will always be very special people to us. A special thanks to Dr. Gonzales for her patience and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC, 28401.

Alma Powell Gunter
Born: 06/09/1921 Person County, NC
Died: 10/06/2011 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Alma Powell Gunter, age 90, of 31 Patterson Drive died Thursday, October 6, 2011 at her home. Born in Person County she was the daughter of the late William Locket Powell and Mabel Clayton Powell and wife of the late Thomas Dixon Gunter, Jr. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Clara Ashley, and four brothers, Walter Powell, Lemuel Powell, Bobby Powell and Samuel Powell. Mrs. Gunter was a former employee of C&A.; She was an avid cake maker and had nurtured many children in her community. Mrs. Gunter was a charter member of Somerset Baptist Church where she was the first director of the WMU.

Survivors include one daughter, Rita G. Eggleston and husband Tommy of Roxboro; three sons, Harold Gunter, Sr. and wife Patricia of Mebane, Leon Gunter of Burlington, and Jackie Gunter and wife Trudy of Ringgold, VA; five sisters, Jessie Mae Piner, Mildred Reid, Betty Smith, Carrie Lee Shotwell and Faye Pope; one brother George Powell; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Somerset Baptist Church by the Rev. Troy Rust and the Rev. Ken Childers. Interment will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Roxboro Fire Department.

The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 PM Saturday prior to the service at Somerset Baptist Church and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Somerset Baptist Church for a home bound ministry, 1835 Old Durham Rd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

Margot Schubert Oakley
Born: 09/07/1932, Germany
Died: 11/06/2011 and resided in Timberlake,

Margot Schubert Oakley, age 79, of Timberlake, died Sunday, November 6, 2011. Born in Germany, she was the daughter of the late Georg and Kunigunde Schubert. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Herta Metzger and one grandson, Zachary Nickell. Mrs. Oakley had retired from Liggett and Myers. Mrs. Oakley was a loving mother and wife. She was a member of Red Mountain Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Thomas D. Oakley of the home; seven daughters, Linda Smith and husband Bill of Durham, Carolyn Blalock of Roxboro, Barbara Cash of Cary, Brenda Saunders and husband Buck of Roxboro, Ann Warren and husband Earl of Roxboro, Donna Priddy of Morrisville and Shelba Nickell of Timberlake; three sons, Russell Perkins of Aurora, Danny Oakley and wife Nancy of Ringgold, VA and Robert Oakley and wife Georgia of Roxboro; one sister, Lydia Mulvihill of Burke, VA; one brother, Helmut Schubert of Germany; three sister-in-laws, Lois Eggleston, Reva Houck and Theresa Oakley all of Roxboro; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald Harris and the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home at 180 Miller Rd., Timberlake, NC 27583.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, c/o Gracie Napier 355A S. Madison Blvd., Roxboro, NC 27573.

John Haskins Holder Jr.
Born: 12/17/1958 Person County, NC
Died: 11/06/2011 and resided in Roxboro, NC

John Haskins Holder, Jr., 52, of 79 Azalea Dr., Roxboro, died Sunday, November 6, 2011. Born in Person County, Mr. Holder was the son of the late John Haskins and Geraldine Gentry Holder. Mr. Holder retired from Collins & Aikman and was a member of Longhurst United Methodist Church. Mr. Holder was an active member of the CSA and the GOP. Mr. Holder was also preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Neal Holder.

Mr. Holder is survived by his wife, Donna W. Holder; one daughter, Maggie Key and husband Andrew, of Roxboro; two step-children, Jennifer Clayton, of Roxboro and Randy Clayton and wife Jill, of Old Fort; two brothers, Danny Holder and wife Harriet, of Massachusetts and Emmett Holder and wife Tina, of Apex; four grandchildren, Taylor Allen, Brooke Clayton, Gabe Vanantwerp and Daylan Vanantwerp; two nephews, Kyle Holder and Daniel Gray.

Memorial services will be held 3 PM, Thursday, at Brooks & White Chapel by the Pastor Francisco Garcia-Velasquez and Elder G. Wesley Stone. Visitation will be held 2-3 PM, Thursday, at the Brooks & White Funeral Home prior to the service.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Royster, Mark Ashley, Richard Rice, Kyle Holder, Scott Memmott, Ben Adams, Larry Hicks and Larry Holder.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to offset the funeral expenses in care of Brooks & White, P.O. Box 1135, Roxboro, NC, 27573.

Nannie Lou Duncan Bowes
Born: 11/22/1927 Person County, NC
Died: 11/06/2011 and resided in Roxboro,

Nannie Lou Duncan Bowes, wife of Milo K. Bowes of 3405 Edwin Robertson Rd., Roxboro, passed away Sunday morning November 6, 2011 at Person Memorial Hospital. Nannie Lou was the daughter of George Washington Duncan and Annie Mae Pulliam and was born in the Surl community of Person County on 22 November 1927. She was preceded in death by her sisters Adline and Dorine and her brother James and is survived by her brother Martin and his wife Doris of Reidsville, NC .

Nannie Lou is also survived by her husband of 64 years, Milo, and her children Jimmie L. Bowes and wife Monique, Carolyn M. Henderson and husband John, Tony D. Bowes and wife Carol, and M. Neal Bowes and wife Janet. She also had 18 grandchildren with 16 living, one-step grandchild and 34 great grandchildren with 2 more expected this month. Nannie Lou is also survived by more than 30 nieces and nephews.

Nannie Lou was very sharp academically and graduated as valedictorian from Mt Tirzah School at the age of 15. After raising her children, she was employed for many years in the parachute industry in Roxboro. She was known for her great love of flowers and gardening, leading to an exciting moment in 1969 when she was bit by a copperhead while weeding her flowers. She loved to travel by car and visited many of the states from the east to the west and many of the national parks. She loved her family very much and was an avid genealogist, usually being one of the first to arrive at family reunions, always with her books to record the family history. In 1962 she obtained a witness of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and received baptism. She expressed her love of the Gospel of Jesus Christ frequently and was a faithful and active member until her health no longer allowed her to attend her church meetings.

Visitation will be held Tuesday night from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at Brooks and White Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11AM at the Brooks and White Chapel in Roxboro by Elder G. Wesley Stone. Burial will follow at Surl Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Nannie Lou’s grandsons will serve as her pallbearers. In remembrance of her love of flowers, floral arrangements are welcomed and encouraged.
