Odal Judy Nelson, 87, of 15505 Hwy 119 N., Semora, died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at her residence. Born in Person County, Miss Nelson was the daughter of the late Monroe and Mandy Stone Nelson. Miss Nelson farmed most of her life.
Miss Nelson is survived by three brothers, Jessie Nelson and Emmett Nelson, both of Milton and Johnny Nelson, of South Boston, VA; one sister Mary Jane Presley, of Semora.
A memorial service will be held 7 PM, Saturday, at the home of her brother Emmett Nelson, 128 Sunset Dr., Milton. Officiating will be the Rev. Herman Chambers.
Drucie D. Duncan

Died: 09/23/2010 and resided in Roxboro, NC
Mrs. Drucie D. Duncan, age 89, of 1195 Oxford Rd., died Thursday, September 23, 2010 at the Caswell House in Yanceyville. Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Edward Duncan and Clara Day Duncan. She was also preceded in death by her husband Bruce C. Duncan. Mrs. Duncan attended Surl Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Rickie Duncan and wife Patsy of Hayesville, NC and Bruce Duncan and wife Helen of Atlanta; one daughter, Brenda Duncan of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Giles Duncan and Angela Duncan.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Person Memorial Cemetery. The Elder David Minter will be officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be George McCormick, Ken Hughes, Ray Duncan, Bill Oakley, Lanny Welch, Erman Painter, Willie Chandler and Harold Chambers.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, September 24, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home, and other times at the home.

Norma W. Whitfield

Norma W. Whitfield, 85, formerly of 9413 Hurdle Mills Rd., Hurdle Mills and currently of Touch of Love Family Care Home on Ridge Rd., Roxboro, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Roxboro Nursing Center. Born in Person County, Mrs. Whitfield was the daughter of the late Dan Lee and Rosa Lee Horton Whitfield and wife of the late Thomas E. Whitfield. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Hutchens, Doris Breeze, and Rose Blackard. Mrs. Whitfield graduated from East Carolina Teacher's College and she retired from Person County Schools having taught first grade at Helena and Oak Lane Elementary School. She was a lifelong member of Clement Baptist Church and devoted to her Clement family.
Mrs. Whitfield is survived by her daughter, Frances Carol Whitfield and her husband John H. Whittington, of Raleigh, NC; her son, Thomas E. (Tommy) Whitfield of Hurdle Mills; her brother, Dan Whitfield, Jr., of Hurdle Mills; her sister, Joanne Rimmer, of Hurdle Mills; three step-grandchildren, Ketih Whittington, Randy Whittington and Melissa Whittington.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday at Clement Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis Wall and the Dr. Ben Gault. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1-2 PM, Friday at Clement Baptist Church. Mrs. Whitfield will be available for viewing from 12-5 PM Thursday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Darrow Rimmer, Skip Hutchens, Danny Morris, Dave Griffith, Billy Martin, Cecil White and Dan Hutchens.

Fenton DeVany Winstead

Fenton DeVany Winstead, 61, of Raleigh died on Tuesday, September 21st. Born on April 20th, 1949 to Samuel Byrd and Margaret DeVany Winstead of Roxboro, he was a graduate of the McCallie School in Chattanooga, TN and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the varsity tennis team and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After 10 years as a tennis pro in Burlington and Wilmington, Fenton moved to Charlotte to work with Safeguard Business Systems. He and his family then moved to Raleigh, where he owned and operated Guardian Office Systems from 1981 until the time of his death. He was predeceased by his parents and by his son, Drew.
Surviving are his two daughters, Anderson Winstead Gardner of Raleigh and Katherine Barden Winstead of Chapel Hill, and three siblings, Charlotte W. Frech of Bald Head Island, NC, Charles L. Winstead, of Virginia Beach, VA and S. Byrd Winstead of Fish Camp, California. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 3:00 pm at Brooks and White Funeral Home (907 Durham Rd, Roxboro, NC 27573).

Joe Thomas Long Sr.

Joe Thomas Long, Sr. age 85 of 2377 Burlington Road died Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Long was born in Person County son of the late Oscar C. Long & Mollie Whitfield Long. He was retired from Roxboro Auto Parts and a US Army Veteran of WWII, where he received two Purple Heart and the Oakleaf Cluster, he was also a member of the VFW, the DAV, the AMVETS and Warrens Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife Ernestine Clayton Long of the home, two sons, Joe Thomas Long, II of Brandon, Fl. and Tim Long of Statham Ga., two grandchildren, Andrew T. Long & Joanne M. Hassanpour and one great-grandchild Braylon Hassanpour, also survive.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at Warrens Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Phillip Chryst. Private interment will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Warren's Grove United Methodist Church and at other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be: Whitey Clayton, Kris Hassanpour, Andrew Long, Tommy Clayton, Tony Long & Devereaux Long.

Patsy Joyce Rowland Wilkerson

Patsy Joyce Rowland Wilkerson, age 66, of 329 N. Charles Street died Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Duke University Medical Center. She was born in Person County and was the daughter of the late Roy L. Rowland and Pauline Arthur Rowland Blalock. She was widow of the late Bennie James Wilkerson. She was also preceded in death by one son, Michael Todd Wilkerson, one brother, Bradsher Gene Rowland, and one sister, Lois Gertrude Thomas. She was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one daughter Kimberly W. Bowes, one son, Adam Blake Wilkerson, one brother, Eddie Rowland, and one sister, Geraldine R. Duncan, all of Roxboro; two grandchildren, M. Joshua Bowes, and Garrison Dawn Bowes, six nieces and a host of great nieces and nephews, also survive.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Oak Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Pam Watkins and Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tim Williams, Ricky Palmer, Rodney Bowen, Danny Bowen, Darrell Wilkerson, Derrick Wilkerson, Tre' Walters, Shaun Wilkerson, Rainey Wilkerson, and Mike Wilkerson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home.
