Harriet Garrett Chambers, age 91 of 1736 Lucy Garrett Road, died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Person County, she was daughter of the late Addie Ashley Garrett & Nathaniel B. Garrett, in addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Eunice C. Hicks. Mrs. Chambers was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, was a nursery worker, and member of the WMU.

Surviving are five children, Addie C. Simmons, Margeret C. Adcock and husband, Gerald C. Adcock all of Danville, Va, Jeanette C. Hawkins, and husband, Jerry B. Hawkins of Timberlake, R. Harold Chambers of Rougemont & Patricia C. Blalock, and husband, Donnie Blalock of Timberlake, three brothers, Charlie William Garrett and Emery Garrett both of Burlington, and Franklin Garrett of Roxboro; one sister, Nancy G. Bond of Hillsville, Va.; 14 Grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.

The funeral service will be 11 AM Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Antioch Baptist Church with Dr. M. David Chambers officiating, burial will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Grandsons, Michael C. Adcock, Christopher D. Adcock, Jerry Bryan Hawkins, Jarrett D. Blalock, Shannon B. Blalock, Shawn C. Blalock and Jimmy Hicks.

The family will receive friends 10 AM to 11 AM Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Antioch Baptist Church prior to the service.

Memorials may be made to Antioch Baptist Church Building Fund, 677 Antioch Church Road, Timberlake, NC 27583.

Joyce Long Melton
Born: 08/13/1936 Person County, NC
Died: 09/14/2010 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Joyce Long Melton, 74, of 1546 Halifax Rd., Roxboro, died Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham. Born in Person County, Mrs. Melton was the daughter of the late Lindsay and Freddie Dunn Long. Mrs. Melton retired after over 20 years with Collins & Aikman and was a very active member of Providence Baptist Church. Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her siblings, Hilda Green, Callie Bowman, Sylvia Blalock and Bobby Long.

Mrs. Melton is survived by her husband, Frank E. Melton; one daughter, Delaine Low and companion Ray Shannon, of Roxboro; three sisters, Mary Elizabeth (Pete) Barnette and husband Paul and Peggy Davis, all of Roxboro and Linda Miller and husband Bill, of Hurdle Mills; two grandchildren, Chris Spence and wife Valarie and Tia Leach and husband Danny; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Spence, Gage Spence and Skyler Ratledge.

Funeral services will be held 3 PM Friday, at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis McDonald, the Rev. Buddy Hall, and the Rev. Raymond Wooten. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 PM Thursday at Providence Baptist Church and at other times at the home.

Pallbearers will be nephews Travis Barnette, Sherwood Melton, Doc Rogers, Kenneth Long, Randy Walker, and Eddie Davis. Honorary pallbearers will also be nephews Glenn Green, Michael Barnette, Bruce Chambers, Keith Barnette, Donnie Bowman and Ricky Bowman and great nephews Devin Barnette, Kevin Bowman, Mark Bowman, and Scott Bowman.

Geneva Swann Woody Kutcher
Born: 03/02/1920 Halifax County, VA
Died: 09/05/2010 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Geneva S. Woody Kutcher, age 90, of 5660 Durham Rd., died Sunday September 5, 2010 at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Halifax County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Barnett Woody and Mary Elizabeth Coleman Woody. She was the wife of the late Leonard Joseph Kutcher. Mrs. Kutcher was also preceded by four sisters, three brothers, one daughter, Cheryl Ann, and one granddaughter, Kimberly Smith. She was a house wife and mother and worked on the family dairy farm. She was an member of Roxboro Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Nancy Zarovy and husband Richard of Taylor, WI, Donna Zarovy and husband Thomas of Bristol, WI, Sonia Hicks and husband James of Black River Falls, WI, and Beverly Smith and husband Danny of American Canyon, CA; one son, Michael Kutcher and wife Karen of Hixton WI; one sister, Dorothy Bowes of Roxboro, NC; one brother, Louis Woody of Burlington, NC; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday September 8, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. DuPre Sanders will be officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Phillip Reams and Reuben Bowes.

The Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM Wednesday September 8, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel.

Additional Services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday September 11, 2010 at Taylor Lutheran Church in Taylor, WI. Pastor Ben Ahles -Iverson will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Margarita DeJesus Maldonado
Born: 08/22/1917 Utuado, Puerto Rico
Died: 09/22/2010 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Margarita De Jesus Maldonado, 93, of Roxboro, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro. Born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, Mrs. Maldonado was the daughter of the late Catalino and Juana Medina DeJesus and wife of the late Fernando Jose Maldonado. Mrs. Maldonado was a homemaker and she attended Sts. Mary & Edward Catholic Church.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Maldonado is survived by her children, Fernando Jose Maldonado, of Newport Beach, CA and Margarita Maldonado Torres, of Newtown, PA; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and her great-niece, Mary Broyles Kimbrough of Roxboro.

Memorials may be made to Sts. Mary & Edward Catholic Church, 611 N. Main St., Roxboro, NC, 27573.

Velvet Virginia Roberts Verastegui
Born: 06/01/1964 Person County, NC
Died: 08/28/2010 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Velvet Virginia Roberts Verastegui, 46, of 667 Ivey Day Rd., died Saturday, August 28, 2010. Born in Person County, NC, she was the daughter of Reggie Barnes and Lillian Vicks Roberts. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Annie Belle and George Benjamin Vicks and Beulah Neighbors and Ed Roberts.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Verastegui is survived by her children, Shannon Virginia King and Keith A. Rimmer, both of Roxboro; one grandson, Nathaniel Bobbitt.

Memorial services will be held 3 PM, Tuesday, Brooks & White Chapel, by the Pastor Mike Whitt. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Gladys Virgina Oakley Simpson
Born: 02/23/1923 Person County, NC
Died: 09/06/2010 and resided in Rougemont, NC

Gladys Virgina Oakley Simpson, age 87 of 10981 Oxford Road, died Monday evening, September 6, 2010 at Person Memorial Hospital. She was born in Person County daughter of the late Mark Oakley & Myrtle Pucci Oakley. Mrs. Simpson was preceded in death by her husband Alvin D. Simpson, her sisters Millie Allen, Gertrude Howell, Catherine Taylor and one brother Elmo Oakley. She was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Surviving are her children, Alvin "Butch" Simpson, Jr., Kaye S. Glasscock, Melvin "Lynn" Simpson" all of Rougemont and Donnie "Ann" S. Horton of Timberlake, ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Lynch and Rev. Barry Chambers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charles Latta, Michael Simpson, Ronald Glasscock, Ken Hill, Roger Whitt, and Linwood Scott Neatherly. Honorary pallbearers will be John Williford and Joshua Woodruff.

The family will receive friends 7-8:30 PM Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
