Frances Critcher Wright
Born: 08/31/1919 Person County, NC
Died: 09/30/2010 and resided in Roxboro, NC

Frances Critcher Wright Educator, Organist, Entertainer 1919-2010

Frances Wright passed away peacefully on September 30, 2010 with her son Gregg and his wife Anne by her side.

Frances Wright, affectionately called Critcher, graduated from Converse College with a BA in Music in 1940. She spent the next six decades teaching piano, the last four decades were exclusively young women; Frances did not have the patience to teach boys who were more interested in sports and didn’t practice. Many parents placed their daughters on a waiting list, some at birth, so that they would have the opportunity to learn from a strict no nonsense instructor. Many of these young women continued their love of music in college; some becoming piano teachers and passing their love of music onto another generation.

Long Memorial Methodist Church was her second home, first as a life long member and then serving as organist from 1965 to 2003, retiring just before her 84th birthday. Frances was known for using the fortissimo pedal, bouncing on the bench and playing preludes for members on their birthdays. The Pauline Newell Hand Bell Choir was another musical legacy Frances initiated, which included youth and adult choirs, in the late 1960’s. The church later honored Frances with a stained glass window in the choir room after her retirement.

Frances will be mostly remembered for her accompaniment of Red Stocking Revues, Person High Players, Summer Youth Musicals, Junior Miss Pageants, and representing Person County at the World’s Fair in Knoxville, TN, and just about anything that required her musical talents. Her kitchen walls are graced with plaques given in appreciation of her contributions to the Person Players, Roxboro Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, and the Exhange Club’s “Book of Golden Deeds.”

Frances was born August 31, 1919, the second daughter of the late Charles Caraway and Margaret Lawson Critcher. Her husband Wallace Lyndon Wright and her sister Margaret Hannah Kinsley predeceased her.

Two sons survive her: Stuart Thurman Wright of Ludlow, England and Gregg Lyndon Wright and wife Anne of Roxboro, NC. She is also survived by a grandson, Wallace Lyndon Wright, II of Richmond, VA and her “adopted” son Tom Alexander and his wife Barbara of Roxboro.

A memorial service will be held on October 3, 2010 at Long Memorial Methodist Church at 7 PM. Visitation will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are made to the Long Memorial Music Department, P.O. Box 310, Roxboro, NC, 27573.
