Rebecca Whitfield Couch, age 49 of 60 Rabbit Lane, Henderson died Friday, October 8, 2010. Born in Durham, NC she is the daughter of James Franklin Whitfield, Sr. and Sylvia Buchanan Myers and her step-father Allen Myers, and step-mother Kay Whitfield. She was preceded in death by her son Bryant Lee Bowen and her mother-in-law Dorothy Bowen. Mrs. Couch had worked as a nursing assistant in various nursing homes for many years. She was a member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
Survivors in addition to her parents include her daughter, Candy Bowen and Jack of Middlesex, NC; two sons, Dennis Ray Bowen and Sherry, and Colton Lee Bowen both of Henderson ; four sisters, Joyce Crabtree of Littleton, Karen Bivins of Timberlake, Robin Goins of Alabama, and Pamela Funderburk of Hillsboro; three brothers, Jimmy Whitfield of Roxboro, Walter Chris Dunn of Creedmoor, and Wayne Myers of Stem; four grandchildren, Breonna, Kristin, Kamron, and Nathan.
A Graveside Service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday October 12, 2010 at the Surl Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Mark Clark will be officiating. Pallbearers will be her nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday, October 10, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of her niece Nicole Rae McCord, 4173 Antioch Church Rd. Timberlake.

Ollie Daniel Moore

Ollie Daniel Moore, 92, of 1179 Robert Whitfield Rd., died Tuesday, October 6, 2010, at Durham Regional Hospital. Born in Person County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late Ernest Edgar and Lora Long Moore and husband of the late Hazel Reynolds Moore. Mr. Moore retired from farming and from Long Brother's Store. He served in the US Army as a scout with the 83rd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion during WWII. Mr. Moore was a member of Clement Baptist Church having served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Bushy Fork Grange and was on the former Bushy Fork School Board.
Mr. Moore is survived by his children and their spouses, Geraldine Moore and Bobby Gerald Newton, of Hurdle Mills, Charles Daniel and Julie Linn Moore, of Matthews, Elna Moore and Walt Norman, of Richmond, VA and Ernest "Ernie" Lee and Ginger Clayton Moore, of Roxboro; seven grandchildren, Kevin Newton, Sr. and wife Linda, Christopher David Norman and wife Sarah, Jeffrey Mark Norman, Robert Daniel Moore, David Charles Moore, Daniel Clayton Moore and Lynette Elizabeth Moore; two great-grandchildren, Kevin Newton, Jr. and Danielle Newton; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Sue Moore and Janelle Moore, both of Hurdle Mills. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his siblings, Curtis Abram Moore, Janie Moore Tilley, Foy Moore Falkner, Rupert Ernest Moore and Herbert Everette Moore, Sr. and by his grandson, Keith Newton.
Funeral services will be held 11AM Saturday, October 9, 2010, at Clement Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis Wall and the Dr. Ben Gault. Graveside services will follow in the church cemetery by the Rev. Johnny Smith and the Rev. Hal Dickerson. Visitation will be held 6-8 PM Friday, October 8, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Tony Stone and nephews Gene Moore, Freddie Tilley, Horace Falkner, Kevin Moore, Herbert Moore, Jr., and Ted Moore. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the John Newton Sunday School Class.

Edward "Ed" Lee Oakes

Edward "Ed" Lee Oakes, age 57, of the Brian Center died Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Person Memorial Hospital. He was born in Caswell County and was the son of the late Cecil Aubrey Oakes and Beulah Mae Persinger Oakes. He was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Lewis Oakes and one sister, Mary Ann Oakes Thaxton.
Surviving are five brothers, Richard Oakes, and Robert Oakes, both of Roxboro; Harvey Oakes and Bill Oakes, both of Leasburg; Archie Oakes of Burlington; one sister, Frances O. Wrenn of Leasburg.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will follow in the Old Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery, 2790 Concord Church Road, Leasburg.
Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary pallbearer will be Faye Thaxton Briggs.
The family will receive friends 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM Tuesday evening at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of his brother, Harvey Oakes, 9331 Leasburg Rd., Leasburg.
John Lee Pleasant

Roxboro - John Lee Pleasant age 75 of 680 Tatum Road died Sunday morning, October 2, 2010. He was born in Person County to the late John Preston Pleasant and his wife Edith Winstead Pleasant. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Becky McKinney, his brother, Robert Pleasant, and his sister, Jennie May Parker. Mr. Pleasant was a farmer and worked for the North Carolina Department of Transportation for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Gracie Oliver Pleasant of the home, his four sons, John Scott Pleasant, Phil Junior Rowland, Michael Dennis Rowland all of Roxboro, Wayne Burney of Chase City, VA, and his daughter, Christine Wilkins of Alton VA.; three sisters, Ida Kendrick and Joann Brann both of Leasburg, and Dot Oakes of Yanceyville; 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
The funeral service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 5, 2010 in the Victory Baptist Church with the Dr. Fred Lowery officiating. Burial will be in the Leas Chapel United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Monday, October 4, 2010 from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM at Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of his son John Scott Pleasant, 681 Tatum Road, Roxboro, NC 27574

Robert Lanzy Lovette III

Robert Lanzy Lovette, III age 40 of 1200 Chub Lake Loop Road, Roxboro, NC died Friday evening, October 1, 2010 at the Hock Family Pavilion. Born in Person County, he was the son of Wanda Holt Lovette & Robert Lanzy Lovette, Jr, who survives. He was an avid fisherman, loved football, racing & wrestling.
In addition to his parents of the home he is survived by his paternal grandmother Midget Hazel Hudges Lovette of Tabor City, NC., one brother Richard Lynn Lovette and wife Amy of Roxboro, a special nephew Richard Corey Lynn Lovette of Roxboro.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, October 4, 2010 at the Brooks&White; Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Jack E. Gates

Mr. Jack Elbert Gates, age 86, died peacefully on September 30, 2010, at Person Memorial Hospital, Roxboro, North Carolina. Mr. Gates was born on June 30, 1924, in Roxboro, North Carolina, to Ruth Brooks Gates and Robert Henry Gates. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Christobel Ruth Gates, and his brother, Charles Brooks Gates.
Mr. Gates was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and member of his extended families of his own family and of his wife’s family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dr. Rosalie Prince Gates, Professor Emerita, Meredith College; his daughter, Lee Gates Crosby, of Raleigh, North Carolina; his son, Jack Robert (Bob) Gates, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and his daughter, Karen Hood Gates Kettler and her husband, Peter Brookes Kettler, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren, John Robert Gates and Anne Elizabeth Gates, of Ann Arber, Michigan; and Hugh Williamson Kettler, David Brookes Kettler, and Ellen Bess Kettler, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He is survived by extended family members, his brother-in-law, Dr. George Edward Prince and his wife Millie Mann Prince of Wilmington, NC; his sister-in-law, Helen Hood Prince Hughes Rice of Waynesville, NC; his brother-in-law David R. Prince and wife Peggy Prince of Banner Elk, NC; his sister-in-law, Alice Prince Osteen and husband Edward Powell Osteen, Sr. of Durham, NC; and his sister-in-law, Willie Barger Gates of Mooresville, NC.
Mr. Gates attended public schools in Person County and graduated from Roxboro High School in 1941. He attended Mars Hill College, 1941-1942, before entering the service. During World War II, Captain Gates served as a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps, 1942-1945, in the China, Burma, India theatre. After the war, Mr. Gates graduated from the School of Business, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1949. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Following his marriage in 1949 to the former Rosalie Estelle Prince of Dunn, North Carolina, he and his wife settled in Roxboro, North Carolina, where he went into business with his father and became President of the Gates Company, the third oldest business in Person County, when Mr. Gates retired and closed the business in 1996. A lifelong member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro, Mr. Gates was a leader in his church, serving on the Board of Trustees and heading the Education Committee for many years. He was a member of the Wesley Hambrick Sunday School Class. A civic leader, Mr. Gates served as President of the Rotary Club of Roxboro, 1966-1967; President of the Roxboro Chamber of Commerce, 1960; Chairman of the Person County Board of Adjustment for more than thirty years, 1961-1994, and President of the Fuel Merchants Association of North Carolina in 1958-1959. He was a loyal Rotarian, a Paul Harris Fellow, with 58 years of perfect attendance in the Rotary Club of Roxboro.
He faced his long illness with cancer with a deep faith, “courage, dignity, and a sense of humor.” He was “a fighter” who drew strength and happiness from the many friends who came to see him, greeting them with a smile. He liked to hear and tell a good story. He was interested in Person County history as one who had lived it and who loved it.
The family will receive friends at Brooks and White Funeral Home on Friday evening, October 1, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral will be held at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Roxboro on Saturday afternoon, October 2, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. with interment following. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Bruce Allen, The Rev. William D. Sabiston, III, and The Rev. E. Powell Osteen, Jr.
Pallbearers will be Brantley T. Burnett; Alfred Cole, Jr.; Bayard Crumpton; Leon Long; Bobby Long; Samuel H. Winstead; Alan Hicks; and Tom Hill Clayton. Honorary pall bearers will be Senator Robert Morgan; Barbara Whitt Clayton; Joann Cruise Bradsher; Dr. Nicole Larrier; members of the Rotary Club of Roxboro, and members of the Wesley Hambrick Sunday School Class.
