Felton Russell Laws, 94, of 6335 Hurdle Mills Road died Saturday evening, October 16, 2010 in the Roxboro Nursing Center. Mr. Laws was son of the late Bernard Russell Laws and Pattie Hall Gates Laws; he was husband of the late Nannie Lea Moore Laws. Mr Laws was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was a World War II Army Veteran having served in several campaigns including the Invasion of Normandy. Felton was retired from Duke University Medical Center as a Carpenter.
Survivors include his two sons and their spouses, Mike and Mickey Laws of Hurdle Mills; Keith and Susan Laws of Danville, Virginia.; his sister, Pattie Mae Kiger of Rougemont; his four grandchildren, Ashley Laws Fletcher and husband Jason; Kyle Laws; Cale Laws and wife Tamra, and Robin Oakley; his four great grandchildren; Lauren Oakley, Kayla Rayne Laws, Chloe Anna Laws, and Jacey-Lea Fletcher.
The visitation will be 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM Monday, October 18, 2010 in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
The funeral service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Bogie and the Rev. Norma Walters officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pall bearers, Bernice Parker, Randy Fletcher, Wallace Laws, II, Jimmy Holeman, Mike Moore, Bill Hutchinson, Jeff Noblett, Tommy Oakley. Honorary pall bearers will be Wallace Laws, John Foushee, Reade Foushee, Maynard Pulliam, Sonny Duncan, Henry Aiken, Paul Hatley, and Russell Horton.

Betty Ann Chandler Garrett

Betty Ann Chandler Garrett, of 623 Long Avenue died peacefully at North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill on October 14, 2010. She was born May 28, 1940 to the late Ernest Daniel Chandler and Lula Stigall Chandler. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Garrett and a brother, Ernest Daniel Chandler, Jr.
Mrs. Garrett was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church where she served on many committees, including Wednesday Fellowship Team, the Flower Committee, The Furnishings and Decorating Committee, assistant Sunday School Teacher and the Women's Missionary Union.
She retired from Central Carolina Bank and Trust in 2002 and became an active member and volunteer in the Roxboro Woman's Club and the Roxboro Garden Club where she was an avid lover of flowers.
Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband, Riley Franklin Garrett of the home and a daughter, Amy Caroline Garrett Fogleman and her husband Gregory Allen Fogleman and two grandchildren Garrett Allen Fogleman and Caroline Elizabeth Fogleman, all of Durham. Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Chandler Dickerson and her late husband Charles D. of Durham and Janie Chandler Bass and her husband Dr. Robert Edwin Bass of High Point ; nieces Dr. Lee Bass Nunn and Judy Chandler Long; nephews Charles David Dickerson, Paul Daniel Dickerson and Robert Edwin Bass Jr.
A memorial service will be conducted by the Dr. DuPre Sanders on Monday, October 18, 2010, at 2pm at Roxboro Baptist Church. Visitation with the family will be immediately after the service and at other times at the home.

William "Bill" Dewey Parker

William "Bill" Dewey Parker, 87, of 6400 Guess Rd., Rougemont, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at VA Hospital in Durham . Born in Orange County, Mr. Parker was the son of the late John Thomas and Mamie Harrison Parker. Mr. Parker was a retired carpenter and he attended Little River Presbyterian Church. Mr. Parker, an Army Veteran, was wounded in action during WWII and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans American Legion Post 412, 40 & 8.
Mr. Parker is survived by his wife, Grace Berry Parker; one daughter, Barbara P. Parker and husband Carlton, of Hurdle Mills; one son, W. Wayne Parker and wife Mary, of Rougemont; one brother, Melvin Parker, of Hurdle Mills; one sister, Lois P. Evans, of Timberlake; four grandchildren, Shane Parker, Carley Parker, Williams Parker, and Maryanna Parker.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Saturday, Little River Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Paul W. Bonham. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6 PM to 8 PM Friday, at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Milton Clayton, Doug Clayton, Jay Berry, Randell Parker, Lane Parker, and Bruce Clayton.

Rachel Marie Day Vaughan

Rachel Marie Day Vaughan, 58, of 4250 Mt. Harmony Church Rd., died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Durham Regional Hospital in Durham. Born in Person County, Mrs. Vaughan was the daughter of the late Leonard and Mollie Bett Bowes Day. Mrs. Vaughan was a former day care worker and a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her husband, Eddie Al Vaughan; one son, Timmy Joe Vaughan and wife Angela, of Roxboro; two brothers, Jerry Day and John Day, both of Timberlake; five sisters, Clara D. Duncan, of Timberlake, Louise D. Faucett, of Henderson, Edith D. Hatcher, of Roxboro, Mary Ann D. Shotwell, of Burlington and Frances D. Thompson, of Snow Camp; three grandchildren, Jordan Leigh Vaughan, Joseph Tyler Vaughan and Mollie Ashlyn Vaughan; and her mother-in-law, Flora Vaughan Watts, of Creedmoor.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Friday, Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Barry Chambers Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-8 PM, Thursday at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.

Cletus Malcolm Bowes

Cletus Malcolm "Shorty" Bowes, age 89, of Roxboro died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Roxboro Nursing Center. Born in Person County, he was the son of the late Richard Thomas Bowes and Mandy Briggs Bowes. He was the husband of the late Geraldine M. Bowes. He was also preceded in death by his 12 siblings. Mr. Bowes had retired from the N.C. Dept. of Transportation. He was of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors include his step-daughter, Patsy Melton Wilson and husband Dewey of Roxboro; three step-grandchildren, Scott Wilson, Dianne Shearon, and Noel Wilson; four step-great-grandchildren, Hallie Shearon, Cassidy Wilson, Will Shearon, and Dakota Wilson.
Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday October 15, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Bowes will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Person Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday October 14, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the home of his step-daughter Patsy M. Wilson at 1455 Gentry Dunkley Rd., Roxboro.
Jean Gravitte Norton

Jean Gravitte Norton, 72, of North Topsail Island, died Friday, October 8, 2010 at New Hanover Medical Center in Wilmington. She was a wonderful "Mother" and great "Nannie"
Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, October 10, 2010 in the Lamberth Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Gerald Thomas. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2-3 PM at the church.
Mrs. Norton is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Tilley of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Elizabeth Barts, of the home; three grandchildren, Brittany Tilley, Blake Tilley and Justin Barts; two brothers, Willie (Billy) Gravitte and wife Rita, of Pawleys Island, SC and John William Gravitte and wife Ann, of Surfside Beach, SC; three sisters, Anne G. Crews and husband Ross (Bud), of Roxboro, Brenda G. Newton and husband Charles, of Goldsboro and Linda G. Humphries and husband Ray, of Wilmington.
