Dorsey Lewis Oliver, 58, of 377 Mellie Clayton Rd., died Friday, March 6, 2009, at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Person County, Mr. Oliver was son of the late Lewis Oliver and Mary Frances Bowes Oliver, of Roxboro. Mr. Oliver was a former employee of Loxcreen and was a farmer and avid woodworker. He was a member of Clement Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Oliver is survived by his wife Deborah Tapp Oliver; five children, Donald Lewis Oliver, of Hurdle Mills, Lynn Painter, of Leasburg, Tracey Powell, of Roxboro, April Pulliam, of Leasburg, and Amy Berned, of Timberlake; fourteen grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Lewis Wall and the Dr. Ben Gault, Sr. Burial will follow in Clement Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:30 PM Sunday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lynn Painter, 7497 US HWY 158E, Leasburg.
Pallbearers will be Randy Horner, Randy Pulliam, David Walker, Scott Powell, Tommy Miller and Arthur Snead.

Glenn Adams Hyde

Glenn Adams Hyde, 93, formerly of 418 S. Lamar St., and the Brian Center in Yanceyville, died Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell. Born in Randolph County, AL, Mrs. Hyde was the daughter of the late Harvey and Carrie Nolen Adams and wife of the late Richard Flynn Hyde. Mrs. Hyde was a homemaker and a member of the Roxboro Bible Church. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed painting.
Mrs. Hyde is survived by her son, Richard Jarrel Hyde, of Greensboro and several sisters.
No services are planned at this time.
Elmer Earl Gillis

Elmer Earl Gillis, 65, of 1100 Tatum Rd., died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at his home. Born in Person County, Mr. Gillis was the son of the late Leonard Marcellus and Grace Elizabeth Gravitt Gillis. Earl was a born again Christian with many gifts and talents. He was instrumental in helping to build several churches. He served as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, choir member and grounds keeper. He was known for his hard work everywhere that he went. He was a plumbing inspector for Durham City and County for 30 years. Earl was also a member of the Flat River Tractor Association and Lord Granville Agriculture Association. He enjoyed restoring antique tractors. He assisted the school board as a representative of the Holloway Township. Earl will always be remembered as an encourager and a man of integrity.
Mr. Gillis is survived by his wife, Linda Oakley Gillis; two sons and daughters-in-law, Joel Kent and Robin Gillis, of Durham and Jeffrey Earl and Pamela Gillis, of Stem; three grandchildren, Tiffany Nicole Gillis, Jared Paul Gillis and Kelsey Morgan Gillis; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Cary Owen and Catheryn Gillis, of Greensboro and Royce Aldwin and Esther Gillis, of High Point; one sister and brother-in-law, Amelia Gillis and Linwood Daniel, of Durham.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Saturday at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Pastor Bruce Hagy, Pastor Robin Bertram and Pastor Wallace Yarbrough. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6:30-8 PM Friday at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Gordon Powell, Charles Sanford, Randall Sanford, Bill Oakley, Scottie Oakley, Ray Westbrook, Ken Bertram, David Maddy, David Daniel, Gary Daniel and Tommy Wagner. Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathan Gillis, Spurgeon Neal, D.T. Neal, Logan Bertram, Morris Westbrook, Lock Chamberlain, Don Hursey, Randy Gillis, Boyd Gillis and Linwood Daniel.
William Erasmus "Ras" Newton Clayton

William Erasmus (Ras) Newton Clayton, 96, of 510 Chub Lake St., died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Person Memorial Hospital. Born in Person County, Mr. Clayton was the son of the late Melvin Thomas (M.T.) and Annie Farmer Clayton and husband of the late Mildred Bass Clayton. Mr. Clayton was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church where he was former member of the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class. He served in the US Army during WWII. He was a former deputy sheriff alongside his father M.T. Clayton who was the sheriff. Mr. Clayton was a former employee of Collins & Aikman and he retired from Tar Heel Chevrolet with 32 years employment. Mr. Clayton was preceded in death by his two brothers, John A. Clayton and George T. Clayton and his two sisters, Bertha C. Gentry and Geraldine Clayton.
Mr. Clayton is survived by his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM Sunday at the Roxboro Baptist Church by the Dr. DuPre Sanders. Burial will follow in Burchwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Roxboro Baptist Church following the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Cecil Pixley, Randy Sears, Clay Tuck, Leroy Farmer, Bryce Gentry and Matt Harris. Honorary pallbearers will be Tojo Clayton, John David Farmer, Kenneth Coulter, S.P. Gentry, Robert (Rock) Jolly, Al Deardorff, Lawrence Moore and Rev. Tommy Robertson and members of the Fishers of Men Sunday School Class.

Margaret Whitlock McSherry

Margaret Whitlock McSherry, 74, of 11855 Academy St., died Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at her home. Born in Bluefield, WV, Mrs. McSherry was the daughter of the late Lyndon Johnson and Virginia Black Whitlock and wife of the late William Taylor McSherry. She graduated from Stratford College in Danville, VA and was a member of Lebanon Christian Church where she served as secretary. Mrs. McSherry was the treasurer of the Milton Woman’s Club. Mrs. McSherry was last employed at M & M Furniture Company.
Mrs. McSherry is survived by two daughters, Julie Taylor McSherry, of Milton and Virginia M. Foster and husband Dr. Andy Foster, of Providence; two grandchildren, Katherine Taylor Foster and James Andrew Foster, II. Mrs. McSherry was preceded in death by her brother, L.J. Whitlock, III.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday at Lebanon Christian Church by the Rev. Harold E. Thompson, Jr. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home.

Cathy Dixon Carmichael

Cathryn “Cathy” Dixon Carmichael age 59 of 75 Carmichael Drive died Tuesday morning, March 03, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Person County to the late Clayborn G. Dixon and Linda Oakes Dixon. Cathy was also preceded in death by her brothers, Tom, Allen, Roby, and Landon “Dick” Dixon. She was a member of Longhurst United Methodist Church. Cathy worked as Dr. J.E. Winslow’s nurse for 16 years and more recently she was employed at Person Family Medical Center. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She was a dedicated, devoted nurse who touched many lives throughout her career. The highlight of her life was spending time with her family, most especially with her grandchildren.
Surviving are her husband, Wilbert Wyatt Carmichael of the home, three children, Cristi Coleman (Larry) of Durham, Wendall Carmichael (Amy) of Cedar Grove, Clayborn “Clay” Carmichael (Christy) of Roxboro; five grandchildren, Trestney Moore, Lindsey and Alyssa Coleman, Lilli & Chloe Carmichael; one brother, Dale Dixon (Sondra) of Roxboro, three sisters, Marion James (Gordon) of Roxboro, Jackie Daniels (Calvin) of Hurdle Mills, Jane Jordan (Charles) of Afton, TN; and her special friend, Jane Burch.
The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:00 PM Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at the Brooks & White Chapel. The funeral service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Longhurst United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Howel and the Rev. Gerald Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Providence Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike Daniels, Paul James, Chris Howard, Chris Dixon, Wayne Leonard, Jay Carmichael and Craig Hicks.
