Dr. James Tanner Thomas, 87, of 1220 Cedar Creek Drive, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. W. Russell Ward Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
He was a native of Lynchburg, Va., a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Medical College of Virginia and was a World War II U.S. Air Force veteran. He practiced dentistry in Greensboro and retired from dentistry in Asheboro in 1964. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Asheboro Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are wife, Leonelle Scrugg Thomas of Asheboro; son, James T. Thomas Jr. of Greensboro; daughters, Karen T. Suttle of Shelby, Judith Wilson of Elon College; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

SILER CITY - Irving William Behm, 87, of 110 N. Garden Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.
A graveside service will be 5 p.m. Sunday at Huskey Cemetery, Royalton, N.Y.
He was the widower of Gertrude Duchow Behm.
Surviving are daughters, Mary Jane Gualtieri of Land O' Lakes, Fla., Evelyn Brown of Medina, N.Y.; son, Fred Behm of Newfane, N.Y.; sister, Dorothy Wilson of Lockport, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Bertha M. Phillips, 91, of 900 W. Dolphin St., died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Sunrise Care Facilities, Siler City.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Wesleyan Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Dennis Boone officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
She was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the Ladies Senior Prayer Group at her church.

STAR - George Lee Haney, 93, of 488 Brewer St., died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of McMinn County, Tenn., and was retired from Montgomery Hosiery.

ANNANDALE, Va. - J. Colvin "J.C." Brown Jr., 71, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at his home in Annandale.
A memorial service was 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of the Good Shepherd, Burke, Va.
He was a native of Gainesville, Fla., a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, attended Duke University and was a 1950 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He retired as publications manager at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), was a publisher of Rural Electrification Magazine, the Rural Electric Newsletter and Rural Electric News Service. He was a government affairs specialist for NRECA in Washington, D.C., the general manager/chief executive of N.C. Electric Membership Corp. and Tarheel Electric Membership Association, Raleigh, and was editor of the association's monthly magazine, the Carolina Farmer (now Carolina Country). He was a news editor at the Elkin Tribune and for the N.C. State University School of Agriculture. He chaired the boards of N.C. Fund and the N.C. Low-Income Housing Development Corp., was a member of N.C. Manpower Council and won two national awards, NRECA's 1959 Haggard Memorial Journalism Award and the 1987 H.E. Kleinfelter Award, given by the Cooperative Communicators Association of North America.
Surviving are wife, Mary Jo Brown; daughters, Mary Beth Wafer of New Haven, Conn., Sara Ricks Brown of Burke, Va., Laura C. Brown of Winston-Salem, Ann Fulton Brown of Wilmington; son, Joel Colvin Brown of Winston-Salem; sister, Ruby B. Burton of Asheboro; nine grandchildren.

Ida Elizabeth Chaney Bowman, 78, of 925 Foxfire Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

He was a native of Randolph County, a farmer and contractor and a member of Gospel Chapel Baptist Church.

HIGH POINT - William Lee Tysinger, 55, formerly of 431 Tate St., died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mt. Shepherd United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peter Rozier and the Rev. John Shook officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He was a native of Randolph County, a carpenter and of the Baptist faith.

SILER CITY - William M. Wren, 92, of 14150 U.S. 64 West, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at Chatham Hospital.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Thomas Sweeley and the Rev. Travis Owen officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a graduate of the University of Alabama where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was a World War II U.S. Navy Air Corps veteran, the former CEO of Siler City Mills Inc. and president of Wren Industries Inc. He was past president of Chatham Poultry
Farms Inc. and Wren Foundation Inc., president of Chatham Bank
and upon its merger with First Union National Bank he served as director in Charlotte and Siler City and as executive committee member of
First Union Corp. from 1968-1976. He was named an honorary director for Life for outstanding service. He was on the Administrative Board at his church, on the board of directors of the Children's Home Society and on the Chatham Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Siler City Rotary Club where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow and was president of the Siler City Country Club.
Surviving are wife, Marion Galloway Wren of Siler City; daughter, Margaret W. de St. Aubin of Siler City; three grandsons.

She was a deaconess, on the Steward Board, Usher Board, Missionary Circle, and was financial secretary at her church. She was a member of Eastern Chapter No. 36 Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Relaxer's Club, a graduate of Peabody Academy, Troy, and of Montgomery Community College Nurses Aide Program and was a certified nurse's aide. She was formerly employed with Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.
Surviving are husband, Walter Gaines Sr. of the home; daughters, Blanche "Penny" Peguese, Loretta Little, Susie Ann Lovelace, all of High Point, Lennette Harshaw of Randleman; sons; Walter Gaines Jr. of High Point, Herbert Gaines of the home, Burlee Gaines of Mt. Gilead; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., a retired federal employee and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Asheboro. He was Past Master of Portsmouth, Va., Naval Lodge #100, in which he was a 50-year member and was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Surviving are wife, Elaine Booth Powell; son, Ken Powell of Asheboro.
