TROY - Robert "Bob" Louis Hubbard Sr., 78, of 131 Oak Lane, Mt. Gilead, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Troy, where he was a member, with the Rev. Raleigh Castelloe officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.

He was a native of Quanah, Texas, a retired employee with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and a life-time member and former Captain of the Carthage Rescue Squad. He was a past Commander of the Mt. Gilead VFW, past President of the Wadeville Lions Club, a former deacon at First Baptist Church of Troy and First Baptist Church of Carthage, and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Jean McKinnon Hubbard of the home; son, Robert Louis Hubbard Jr. of Mt. Gilead; daughter, Dorothy H. Rogers of Carthage; sister, Cleo Pappenfus of Flatonia, Texas; brothers, O D. Hubbard of San Francisco, Calif., Odell Hubbard of San Angelo, Texas, Vernie Hubbard of Fort Worth, Texas; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Floyd Spinks
SILER CITY - Floyd Spinks, 84, of 3418 Coleridge Road, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Cox Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Charles Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a trustee and Sunday School teacher at his church and a member of Oakland Lodge #501 in Ramseur.

Surviving are foster daughter, Mary Spinks of Coleridge; sister, Clarice Spinks of Coleridge; brothers, Albert Spinks of Ramseur, William Penn Spinks and Otho Spinks, both of Coleridge; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Farrar Funeral Home, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

George P. Upton III
CLINTON - George Philmore Upton III, 35, of 410 Beamon St., died Sunday, May 30, 1999, in UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Homer Morris officiating. Burial will be in Clinton Cemetery.

He was employed as a waiter.

Surviving are parents, George and Mary Talley Upton of Clinton; sister, Erica Upton of Selbyville, Del.; grandmother, Etta Saunders Talley of Clinton.

The family will be at Crumpler-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Clinton, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of his parents, 512 Pineview Road.

Charlie Newlin
Orlin Charlie Newlin, 94, of 1383 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Asheboro, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Science Hill Friends Meeting, where he was a member, with the Rev. James Marion officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, the widower of Henrietta Lassiter Newlin, a graduate of Guilford College and worked with the Soil Conservationists. He was a teacher at Summerfield and Farmer High School and was a retired dairy farmer.

Surviving are sons, Charles William Newlin and David Edward Newlin, both of Asheboro; sisters, Orpha N. Seifert of Greensboro, Louella N. Thomas of Siler City; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Daniel W. Chriscoe
Daniel Webster Chriscoe, 35, of 2977 Burney Road, Asheboro, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Community Baptist Church, Seagrove, with the Rev. David Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and employed as a furniture upholster.

Surviving are mother, Annie Davis Gillis of Seagrove; step-father, Bobby Gillis of Seagrove; father, Henry Farrell Chriscoe of Seagrove; sisters, Clara Mae Baber and Anna Marie Chriscoe, both of Seagrove, Amy Hunsucker of Robbins; brothers, Donald Chriscoe and Gurnie Chriscoe, both of Seagrove, Melvin Chriscoe of Bennett.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the mother's home, 3590 Brower Mill Road, Seagrove.

Judy S. Safrit
Judy Karen Smith Safrit, 40, of 1141 S. Park Drive, Asheboro, died Monday, May 31, 1999.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Lee Roy Hunt officiating.

She was a native of Asheboro, a graduate of Asheboro High School and of Randolph Community College's nursing program, and was employed with Pediatric Services of America.

Surviving are daughter, Melissa Karen Safrit of the home; mother, Zelda Smith of Asheboro; sister, Kay Williamson of Asheboro; brothers, Jimmy Smith and Jerry Smith, both of Asheboro.

The family will be at the home of her mother, 611 Peachtree St., Asheboro, on Wednesday.

RAMSEUR - Isaac Woodrow Parks, 86, of 7697 Coltrane Meadow Road, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Greensboro Retirement Center.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Roger Riffe and the Rev. Tom Hill officiating. Burial will be in Parks Cross Roads Christian Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a farmer and a member of Parks Cross Roads Christian Church.

Surviving are sons, Larry Parks of Mebane, Jerry Parks of Ramseur; daughter, Julia Smith of Greensboro; brothers, Samuel Parks and Franklin Parks, both of Ramseur; sister, Mary Allen of Ramseur; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Jerry Parks, 7712 Coltrane Meadow Road, Ramseur.

Elgie M. Freeman
STAR - Elgie Maie Freeman, 74, of 176 Dog Patch Lane, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service was 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Tracy Ritter officiating. Burial was in the Freeman Family Cemetery, Star.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, David L. "Bud" Freeman of the home; daughters, Sue Moore of Wilmington, Rose Marie Chappell of Rockingham, Brenda Burroughs of Star; sisters, Mary Lee James of Biscoe, Rosa Barnes of Ellerbe; brother, James E. Britt of Biscoe; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.

Kenneth W. Parton
Kenneth Wayne Parton, 59, of 603 Lincoln Ave., Asheboro, died Thursday, June 3, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro, with the Rev. Edwin Moore officiating. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Leemont Cemetery in Danville, Va.

He was a native of Danville, Va., a U.S. Air Force veteran, a former driver for Royal Tours in Randleman and a member of Christians United in Danville, Va.

Surviving are wife, Kathy D. Parton of Asheboro; daughter, Kalyn Drew Parton of the home; son, Kevin Parton of Danville, Va.; stepdaughter, Bethany Lynn Salmons of Collinsville, Va.; stepson, Joseph Benjamin Salmons IV of Collinsville, Va.; brothers, the Rev. Larry G. Hill of Danville, Va., and Michael Hill of Liberty; sister, Belinda Lawson of Providence; one grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Clelia S. Thomas
Clelia Virginia Smoake Thomas, 83, of 636 Dixon Ave., Asheboro, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Henry Thompson and the Rev. Jonathan Shook officiating. Burial will be in West Bend United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, retired from Walker Shoe Co., a member of West Chapel United Methodist Church and the widow of Floyd E. Thomas.

Surviving are sisters, Margie L. Hunter of Lugoff, S.C., and Dot Shaw of Denton; niece, Nancy Odom of the home.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday and other times at the home.

James C. Crabtree Sr.
HENDERSON - Lt. Col. James Cameron Crabtree Sr., 78, of 1895 Spring Valley Road, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, in Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at J.M. White Funeral Home Chapel in Henderson, with Gary Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

He was a native of Vance County, retired from the U.S. Air Force, a World War II veteran, a former employee of Corbitt Truck Co., a postal letter carrier, a member of Spring Valley United Methodist Church and the widower of Edna Powell Crabtree.

Surviving are daughter, Ann Crabtree Cameron of Asheboro; son, James Cameron Crabtree Jr. of Henderson; sister, Juanita C. O'Neal of Marshville; 10 grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Paul M. Nelson Sr.
Paul Matthew Nelson Sr., 82, of Asheboro, died Wednesday June 2, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Billy Flinchum officiating.

He was a native of Stokes County and a retired farmer.

Surviving are wife, Thelma Smith Nelson; sons, Paul Matthew Nelson Jr. and Larry Wayne Nelson, both of Asheboro; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 12:30-1:30 p.m. Friday.

Rev. Tate Jones
FRANKLINVILLE - Rev. Russell Tate Jones, 88, of 249 Allred St., died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Terry Kersey officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Burlington Industries and was a Free Trinity Holiness Church minister for several years.

Surviving are wife, Margaret Jones, of the home; son, Walter Jones; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of the son, 2580 Bethel Friends Road, Asheboro.

Myrtle P. Holland
RAMSEUR - Thelma Myrtle Parnell Holland, 78, of 4410 Jones St. Ext., died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Gary Moger and the Rev. Bruce McLanahan officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Robeson County, the widow of Larry R. Holland and a retired home health care worker.

Surviving are sisters, Bertie Mae Vierra and Rosa Lee Yeagle, both of Bolivia, Geneva Sherman of Richmond, Va.; brother, Joe Parnell of Ramseur.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of George and Jo Ann Braxton, 5878 Ferguson Road, Ramseur.

ARCHDALE - Mary Francis Moore Leonard, 80, of 6823 Joplin Drive, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sechrest Funeral Home, Archdale, with the Rev. Rick Shoemaker and the Rev. John Hill officiating. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park.

She was a native of Lenoir County, a graduate of Holmes Bible Institute and a member of True Gospel Baptist Church where she taught the Ladies Sunday School class.

Surviving are husband, Clarence Wilbur Leonard of the home; daughter, Carole L. Folwell of Archdale; son, Clarence W. Leonard Jr. of Asheboro; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Paul A. Loflin
DENTON - Paul Alexander Loflin, 82, of 1415 Loflin Road, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Lexington Health Care.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, with the Rev. Mark Andrews and the Rev. Robert Hughes officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County and a self-employed cabinetmaker.

Surviving are wife, Margie Myers Loflin of the home; daughter, Christine Nickell of Butler, Ala.; brother, Roby Loflin of Denton; sisters, Virgie Goodwin and Naomi Gallimore, both of Denton; three grandchildren.

Lois V. Pearce
SILER CITY - Lois Vestal Pearce, 67, of 537 Poe Road, died Wednesday, June 2, 1999, at Alamance Regional Hospital, Burlington.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Staley United Methodist Church, Staley, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Edinger officiating. Burial will be in Staley Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, a member of her church Sunday school class and was employed with Rugged Sportwear.

Surviving are husband, J. Neal Pearce of Siler City; son, Joe Allen Pearce of Trinity; daughter, Susan P. Decker of Nashville, Tenn.; brothers, Samuel Vestal, James Vestal and Albert Vestal, all of Siler City; sisters, Frances V. Barker and Sue V. Mendenhall, both of Siler City; three grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Willis L. Barnette
MOORESVILLE - Willis Lee Barnette, 70, of Lakeshore Drive, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, Mooresville.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, Mooresville, where he was a member, with the Rev. Phillip DeBerry, Jr. and the Rev. Charles Carter officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

He was a native of Iredell County, a retired U.S. Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer who served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam and where he earned two Distinguished Service medals. He later worked for Reeves Curon Division and established Custom Products, where he served as CEO and President. He was president of the J.W. Jones Sunday School class at his church, a member of the Board of Directors of Mooresville Savings Bank and a member of the local board of Nations Bank. He was a member of the Lake Norman Shrine Club, Oasis Shrine Temple, Scottish Rite Bodies and Mooresville Masonic Lodge #496 AF & AM.

Surviving are wife, Louise Jones Barnette; daughter, Lynda B. Cook of Mooresville; son, Bill B. Barnette of Mooresville; brothers, J.Y. Barnette of Charlotte, Pressley Barnette of Asheboro; two grandsons.

Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Myrtle I. Callicutt
TROY - Myrtle Irene Callicutt, 80, of 104 D. Wesleyan Homes II, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at Britthaven of Piedmont in Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Callicutt Chapel Wesleyan Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. James Brady, the Rev. George Harper and the Rev. Bob Freeman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughter, Jenny Freeman of Troy; sons, Sparky Callicutt of Norwood and David Callicutt of Gastonia; brother, Bernard Hall of Mt. Airy; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Pugh-Troy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

J.B. Carlyle
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - J.B. Carlyle, OS 1, 62, formerly of Moore County, died Friday, June 4, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Putnam Friends Church in Carthage, with the Rev. Ernest Moore and the Rev. D.L. Hussey officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Virginia Beach, Va.

He was a native of Moore County, retired after 23 years in the U.S. Navy and a salesman for Mega Mazda in Virginia Beach, Va.

Surviving are wife, Patricia Thompson Carlyle; daughter, Donna Lynn Carrop of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, Timothy J. Carlyle of the home; mother, Lucinda L. Carlyle of Cameron; sisters, Stella Whitaker and JoAnn Baxley, both of Carthage, Joyce Futral of Vass and Peggy Patterson of Sanford; brothers, David O. Carlyle of Bennett and Gerald Carlyle of Southern Pines; three grandsons.

The family will be at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday.
