ROBBINS - Joel Wade Cranford Sr., 77, mayor of the town of Robbins, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Earl Dulaney officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.
He was a native of Denton, a World War II Army veteran, retired after 35 years from Nationwide Insurance Company, had served on the Robbins Board of Commissioners and the Moore County Boy Scout Council, was a former member of the administrative board and church choir at his church and had taught Sunday School, and was a member of Woodmen of the World and the Robbins Lions Club.
Surviving are wife, Helen Bulla Cranford of the home; daughter, Jan Cranford Kennedy of Lumberton; sons, Joel Wade Cranford Jr. of Asheboro and Randy Cranford of Pinehurst; sisters, Annie C. Watts of Thomasville and Marjorie Cranford of Denton; brother, Mack C. Cranford of Denton; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Perth Amboy, N.J., and worked at Southwestern Randolph High School.
Surviving are daughter, Marjorie McMillen, of Carievale, Saskatchewan, Canada; son, Andrew C. Elling of Asheboro; brother, Freeman Leaming of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren.
The body will lie in state an hour and a half before the service and the family will be at the church after the service.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Sunday at the Friends Home Chapel at Guilford. Inurnment will be in the columbarium of Christ United Methodist Church.
He was a native of Salisbury, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, retired after 41 years from Pilot Life Insurance Co., and a member of Christ United Methodist Church, the Asbury Sunday School class and the Methodist Men.
Surviving are wife, Thettis Huger Smith Hoffner of the Friends Home; daughters, Tet Starnes of Charlotte and Jean H. Butler of Asheboro; sisters, Helen Dyer and Vernie Lyerly, both of Davidson; brother, Ernest Hoffner of Salisbury; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
The family will be at the chapel following the service.
