CARTHAGE - S. Sgt. David Berkland, U.S. Army, 23, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, as a result of a motor vehicle accident near Ft. Polk, La.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Carthage, with Dr. J. Billy Graham officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Surviving are wife, Jill Woodham Berkland; mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Carroll of Kansas City, Mo.; father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Berkland of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters, Darci Foster and Laura Carroll, both of Kansas City, Mo., Julie Walker of Colorado Springs Colo.; brothers Derrick Berkland of Ft. Leonard Wood Mo., Daniel Berkland of Kansas City, Mo.

Lula D. Lowder
ALBEMARLE - Lula Deese Lowder, 93, formerly of 24733 St. Martin Road, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Stanly Funeral Home, Albemarle, with Elder Rom Kerley and the Rev. Farrell Shimpock officiating. Burial will be in Stanly Gardens of Memory.

She was a native of Stanly County, the widow of Adam Lowder, a homemaker and was of the Primitive Baptist faith.

Surviving are son, Harold Lowder of Albemarle; daughter, Ruby L. Simpson of Albemarle; brother, Jerry Lee Deese of Albemarle; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Robert D. Larlee
BANGOR, MAINE - Robert Daniel Larlee, 70, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at the Veteran's Home in Bangor, Maine.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Brown's Chapel Christian Church Cemetery, Robbins, with the Rev. Brady Stephens officiating.

He was a native of Milliknockett, Maine, a U.S. Army veteran and was a retired accountant.

Surviving are daughters, Diana Kiefer of Mission Viejo, Calif., Nancy Nall of Eagle Springs; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, is in charge of local arrangements.

Vernon L. Talbert
Vernon Lawrence Talbert, 80, of 2048 Poole Town Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, June 23, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 5 p.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Michael Jordan and Dr. Boyd Stokes officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, the retired owner and operator of The Butcher Shop in Asheboro and a member of First United Methodist Church and of Balfour Masonic Lodge #188.

Surviving are wife, Louise Dorsett Talbert of the home; daughter, Laura Amdursky of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, Felix Talbert of Asheboro; sisters, Martha Preslar and Lois Gaddy, both of Mt. Gilead.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

RANDLEMAN - Laura Spencer Currie, 89, formerly of U.S. 311 South, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Harshaw Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. William D. Roseman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a former member of Harshaw Grove Baptist Church and a member of East Market Street Seventh Day Adventist Church, Greensboro.

Surviving is brother, Amos Spencer of Chester, Pa.

The family will be at the church 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of Betty Gant, 623 Stout Road, Randleman.

E. Bradley Loflin
DENTON - E. Bradley Loflin, 91, of 25210 N.C. 8, died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Randolph Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an accident at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Alleghany United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Ayers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, the widower of Virginia Fine Loflin, a farmer, a member of First Baptist Church of New London, a former Sunday School director of Taylors Grove Baptist Church and was one of the founders of Denton Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are sons, Bill Loflin of Asheboro, Joe Loflin of Denton, Robert Loflin of New London, and Clarence Loflin of Nokomis, Fla.; daughters, Dorothy Hill and Carlene Varner, both of Denton, Marlene Efird of Rockwell, and Evangeline Crisco of Stanfield; sister, Elizabeth Nifong of Thomasville; 27 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren.

Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, is in charge of the arrangements.

James P. Marley
ROBBINS - James P. Marley, 80, of 228 Hall Road, died Saturday, June 26,1999, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at New Testament Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Thomas Horner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors.

He was a native of Moore County, a deacon at his church, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Robbins V.F.W. Post #9245, had worked in textiles and was a poultry farmer.

Surviving are wife, Pauline Wallace Marley; daughters, Dianne M. Moore and Wanda M. Smith, both of Robbins; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

Clara C. McNeill
RED SPRINGS - Clara Canady McNeill, 69, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Burial will be in Alloway Cemetery.

She was a native of Cumberland County and a member of Eastern Star #8 in Red Springs.

Surviving are husband, Glenn B. McNeill Sr. of Red Springs; son, Glenn B. McNeill Jr. of Asheboro; daughters, Janet M. Bunnells of Hope Mills, Patricia M. Hill of Aiken, S.C.; brothers, Marley C. Canady and James W. Canady, both of Hope Mills; sisters, Freddie C. Harper of St. Pauls, Margaret C. Edge of Fayetteville; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; four stepgrandchildren.

Stephanie Ann Cox, 21, of 446 Old Liberty Road, Asheboro, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Bernie Raymond officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a 1996 graduate of Asheboro High School.

Surviving are parents, Steve and Mary Cox of the home; brother, Chad Wayne Cox, of the home; grandparents, Carroll Cox, and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Cox, all of Asheboro; great-grandmother, Bessie Cox of Greensboro.

Eva Gertrude Jackson Nance, 82, of 400 Vision Drive, Asheboro, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Sunrise Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at High Pine Wesleyan Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Wyatt Hoogkamp officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Milford Nance, retired from Rampon Products and was a member of High Pine Wesleyan Church.

Surviving are daughter, Irene Allred of Asheboro; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of the daughter, 1265 Randolph Tabernacle Road, Asheboro.

Howard O. Burnette Sr.
RANDLEMAN - Dr. Howard Olsen Burnette Sr., 82, of 108 N. Coble St., died Sunday, June 27, 1999.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Michael Shannon officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a doctor of family medicine from 1947-1981 in Randleman.

Surviving are son, Howard 0. Burnette Jr. of Greensboro; daughters, Linda B. Hunt of Gibsonville, Lisa B. Kimble of Burlington; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Margaret A. Wells
RANDLEMAN - Margaret Alice Wells, 51, of 373 Bristol Lane, died Saturday, June 26, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Rex Pollard officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park, Greensboro.

She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Level Cross.

Surviving is sister, Judith Irene Wells of Greensboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday.

John H. Williamson
SEAGROVE - John Henry Williamson, 66, of 2640 Pottery Road, died Saturday, June 26, 1999, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Center Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jimmy Shirlen officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County and a retired saw mill worker.

Surviving are sisters, Nora Stutts and Linda Chriscoe, both of Seagrove.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of Linda Chriscoe, 7088 Union Grove Church Road, Seagrove.

Lillian S. Shoffner
JULIAN - Lillian S. Shoffner, 90, of Britthaven of Greensboro, formerly of Julian, died Sunday, June 27, 1999.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. David Cash officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Guilford County, a former nurse's aid at Wesley Long Hospital, a member of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Joy Club at her church.

Surviving are sons, Richard Shoffner Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., Eugene S. Shoffner and Dale Shoffner, both of Greensboro, Terry Shoffner of Julian, Lynn D. Shoffner of Liberty; brother, John Shepard Jr. of Liberty; sisters, Dorothy Lowe and Willa Williams, both of Liberty; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Effie Mae Taylor Bean, 86, formerly of Asheboro, died Friday, June 18, 1999.

Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at W.J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, Newport News, Va., with Dr. William A. Lockwood and the Rev. Greg Cox officiating. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Randolph Memorial Park, Asheboro, with David Bailey officiating.

She was a member of Central Wesleyan Church and was the widow of George H. Bean.

Surviving are daughters, Toby Boyea, Vivian Winslow and Mary Bailey, all of Newport News, Va.; brothers, Vernon Taylor of High Point, Paul Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home Tuesday following the service, until 8:30 p.m.

Thomas P. Kandis
Thomas Peter Kandis, 78, of The Laurels of Salisbury in Salisbury, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at his home.

No services will be held.

He was a native of Pireaus, Greece, the widower of Amy Kraft Kandis, a retired leather shop owner in Cleveland, Ohio, and was formerly employed with Ford Motor Company in Cleveland.

Surviving are son, Peter Thomas Kandis of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Elaine K. Smith of Salisbury; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

STALEY - Ralph Brewer of 2602 Olivers Chapel Road died Thursday, June 24, 1999.

Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday at Olivers Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughter, Frances Brewer of Greensboro; mother, Rushie Brewer of Siler City; sister, Mary Lane Jones of Staley; brother, Jazz Siler of Siler City.

Betty J. Saruse
GREENSBORO - Betty Jean Saruse, 68, died Monday, June 28, 1999, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Friendship Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park.

Surviving are daughter, Sue Brown of Greensboro; sons, Mike Saruse of Randleman, Greg Maples of Raleigh; eight grandchildren.

He was a native of Asheboro, the widower of Blanche Savannah Scoggins, was employed with White Oak Cotton Mill for 42 years and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are Pearl Simmons; daughters, Nancy Worley and Linda Medley, both of Gibsonville, Sylvia Gardner of Richmond, Va.; sons, Tommy Scoggins of Mebane, George Kelly Harvell, Bobby Scoggins, Earlie L. Harvell Jr., Howard Harvell and J.W. Harvell, all of Gibsonville; sisters, Betty Knott of Greensboro, Esta Maness of Seagrove, Allene Berry of Julian; 32 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Street, Greensboro, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of Nancy Worley, 5811 Winfrey Cummings Road, Gibsonville.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.
