BURLINGTON - Cora Mae Scott Rhodes, 87, of the Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center, 730 Hermitage Road, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's New Mission United Church of Christ, where she was a member, with the Rev. Tim Allen officiating. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

She was a native of Orange County and the widow of Jasper C. "Jack" Rhodes.

Surviving are daughters, Jackie Kane and Mary Adams, both of Burlington, Judith Cone of Cary, Jean Kindschi of Asheboro; sister, Mrs. Clifford H. Bain of Swansboro; brother, Franklin D. Scott of Prattville, Ala.; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Rich & Thompson Mortuary, Burlington, is in charge of the arrangements.

R. Mack Fields
SILER CITY - R. Mack Fields, 58, of 13300 N.C. 902, Bear Creek, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Bear Creek, where he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Capps and the Rev. Bob Wachs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County and a former deacon and assistant Sunday School teacher at his church.

Surviving are wife, Barbara Morrison Fields of Bear Creek; daughter, Susan F. Garner of Carthage; brothers, Buck Fields of Siler City, Allen Fields of Charlotte; sisters, Kay Willett of Southern Pines, Margaret Barth of Siler City, Frances Goins of Julian; one grandson.

BISCOE - Charlie Leon Haywood, 42, of 139 Jasper Drive, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Guiding Light Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clyde Allen officiating. Burial will be in Biscoe Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a U.S. Army veteran and employed with Springs Industries, Inc.

Surviving are wife, Mihui Min Haywood of Manchester, N.H.; sons, Mickey Haywood of the home, Jasper Haywood of Manchester, N.H.; parents, Paul and Myrtle Staley Haywood of Biscoe; sister, Phyllis Thompson of Candor; brothers, Ivey Haywood and James F. Haywood, both of Biscoe.

The family will be at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

MT. GILEAD - Frederick Douglas Chambers, 92, of 2710 N.C. 109 South, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at McAuley Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was the oldest member. Burial will be in McAuley Memorial Garden, Mt. Gilead.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a class leader and a member of the steward board at his church and was retired from Jordan Lumber Co.

Surviving are daughters, Frances C. Ewing of the home, Addie C. Dumas of Mt. Gilead; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, is in charge of the arrangements.

Doris D. Simpson
CARTHAGE - Doris Deaton Simpson, 64, of 236 Mt. Carmel Road, died Thursday, Aug. 5,1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. William Hancock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County and an organist at her church for over 30 years.

Surviving are husband, J.D. Simpson of the home; daughters, Brenda S. Cranford of Robbins, Marsha Grijalva of Sallisaw, Okla.; son, Steve Simpson of Tega Cay, S.C.; sister, Carol Sanders of Seagrove; brothers, Meriel Deaton of Robbins, Jim Deaton of Concord; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

George F. Barnhardt
MT. PLEASANT - George Frank Barnhardt, 78, of 2880 Mt. Pleasant Road South, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Northeast Medical Center, Concord.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Cold Springs United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Bill Gerhardt and the Rev. Harry Queen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Cabarrus County, retired from Cannon Mills, Plant #1, was a gardener, cook and caterer, a life-time member of the Mt. Pleasant Lions Club and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Gail B. Swaringen of Asheboro; sons, Mike Barnhardt of Mt. Pleasant, Lin Barnhardt of the home; sister, Doris Furr of Concord; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Gordon Funeral Service in Mt. Pleasant 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home. Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of local arrangements.

James Voy Henson Jr., 66, of 2151 Old Humble Mill Road, Asheboro, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev Clay Davis, the Rev. Maxton Craven and John Dortch officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a Korean War U.S. Army veteran, was retired from Collins & Aikman in Siler City and was a life member of DAV Chapter 22.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran of Korean, a retired plumber, a member of the Coleridge and Erect Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Coleridge Lions Club.

Surviving are wife, Colene Cox Marley of the home; son, Bryan Marley of Coleridge; two grandchildren.

She was a native of Moore County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughter, Molly Cagle Roberts of Eustis, Fla.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - U. Fenner Faulkner, 67, of 405 Pinehurst Ave., died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Summer Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph Peters officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Joseph G. Henson American Legion Post and an employee of IGA Food Folks in Carthage.

Surviving are daughter, Linda Carol Faulkner of the home; sons, Robert Faulkner, Ted F. Faulkner and George F. Faulkner, all of Carthage; mother, Julie S. Faulkner Barber of Carthage; sisters, Julie Matthews of Pinebluff, Nancy Sherman of Carthage; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Edgar L. Cheek
Edgar L. Cheek, 85, of 616 Browers Chapel Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired owner/operator of Cheek Sign Company, a member of First Baptist Church, a Mason and a member of Balfour Lodge #188 AF&AM.

Surviving are wife, Anna Belle Pike Cheek; sisters, Annie C. Shaw of Asheboro, Helen C. Mabe of Star.

The family will be at the funeral home 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday.

She was a native of Greenwood, S.C., the widow of Samuel Gant, attended school in both Greenwood and Philadelphia and retired from Nannette Manufacturing Company after 30 years.

Surviving are daughter, Myrtle G. Fox of Randleman; son, Willie Earl Gant of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

The family will be at the church 12:30 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of the daughter, 797 Stout Road, Randleman.
