MT. GILEAD - Helen Smith Crepps, 79, of 673 DeBerry Road, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the home of her daughter, 399 Roselyn Road, Troy.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Stony Fork Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gene Bruton and the Rev. Flynn Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, retired from Sox Inc. of Mt. Gilead and the widow of Albert Crepps.

Surviving are son, Benny Crepps of Pittsboro; daughters, Barbara Ross of Gaffney, S.C., and Brenda McIntyre of Troy; brother, LaVerne Smith of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Rachel Warner and Betty Jean Suggs, both of Troy, Bernice Hurley of Maiden, and Irene Nordan and Mercie Greene, both of Mt. Gilead; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 5-7 p.m. Sunday.

SILER CITY - McCoy Staley Gathings, of 835 Lane-Jordan Road, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Sunbridge Nursing Center, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Jordan Grove A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial will be in Little Rock Bible Way Church Cemetery in Siler City.

Surviving are husband, Jesse Gathings of the home; father and stepmother, Hayworth and Effie Cheek of Ramseur; sons, Steve Walden of Alexandria, Va., and Charles Staley of Asheboro; daughters, Charlotte Feaster of Ramseur and Vivian Siler of High Point; sisters, the Rev. Gladys Matthews and Annie Hall, both of Siler City, Judy Jones of Arden, Md., Sable Humphries of Washington, D.C., and Zula Matthews of Ramseur; brothers, Grady Lane of Upper Marlboro, Md., Lawrence Brooks of Washington, D.C., Jerry Brooks of Robbins, Winfred Cheek of Ramseur, Joshua Brooks of New Mexico and Sherman Brooks of the home; stepson, Lee Cokley of the home; 11 stepchildren; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

SILER CITY - Alice Stuart Harris, 88, of Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation, formerly of Silk Hope, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at South Fork Friends Meeting, where she was a member, with Jon Reece officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County and retired as a nurse's aide at Chatham Hospital.

Surviving are son, Vernon Harris of Silk Hope; sister, Blanche S. Kiser of Greensboro; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

W. Wilson Johnson
SILER CITY - W. Wilson Johnson, 87, of 117 College St., died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Sunbridge Care Facilities in Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Wachs and the Rev. David Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, Sanford.

He was a native of Lee County, retired after 34 years with the Boling Chair Co., and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Irene Hilliard Johnson of Siler City; son, Lewis W. Johnson of Siler City; sisters, Pauline J. Cole and Bernice Johnson, both of Sanford; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

RANDLEMAN - Jerry Wayne "Big Jerry" Pitts, 32, of 6602 Holder Inman Road Extension, Box 1271, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Moses Cone Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel, Greensboro. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.

He was a native of Guilford County, a delivery driver for Advance Auto Parts, a cook for B.G. McGee's Restaurant, a volunteer fireman at Level Cross Station #43 and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are father, Jack Benny Pitts of High Point; brother, Jack B. Pitts Jr. of Randleman; sister, Stephanie D. Pitts of Randleman.

William H. Sexton
LEXINGTON - William Herman Sexton, 75, of 268 Jolly Road, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Family Funeral Care Chapel, Thomasville, with the Rev. Lacy Cagle and the Rev. Johnny Albertson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Clarksbury United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a woodcarver with Commercial Carving for 45 years and with Modern Carving for 10 years, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, member and past president of the Silver Valley Civitan Club and of the Holiness faith.

Surviving are wife, Odessa Jarrett Sexton of the home; daughters, Naomi Sexton of the home, Jerri Bundy of Whiteville and Kay Embler of Thomasville; son, Charles Sexton of Lexington; brother, Ray Von Sexton of Thomasville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

TAMPA, Fla. - Colon Clifford Welch, 87, of 5011 S. Hesperides, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

A private service will be held at a later date.

He was a native of Randolph County and retired after 50 years as a buyer for Belk-Lindsey.

Surviving are wife, Jean L. Welch; sons, Steve Welch of Asheboro and Clifford Welch of Tampa, Fla.; brother, Vernie Welch of Ramseur; one grandson; two great-grandsons.

Edgar B. "Red" Leonard Sr., 71, of 874 N.C. 49 S., Asheboro, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Monday at Charlotte United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Steve Wood and the Rev. Sonny Reavis officiating. Burial was in Bethasda Cemetery, Aberdeen.

He was a retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant and a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.

Surviving are wife, Irene Deaton Leonard of Asheboro; daughters, Sharon Andrews of Colville, Wash., Kathy Leonard of Greensboro; sons, Eddie Leonard of Carthage, Johnny Leonard of Atlanta, Ga., Larry Leonard of Pinehurst; stepsons, James Deaton of Randleman, Buster Deaton of Asheboro; stepdaughters, Mildred T. She was a native of Raeford, assisted her husband in the operation of Arnold's Auto Service in Long Beach for 28 years and was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Island.

Surviving are husband, James Arnold Burke of Randleman; sons, James Beard of Trinity, Keith Burke, Gary Burke and Jeff Burke, all of Garner; daughters, Angela Chapman of Randleman, Lisa Padgett of Wake Forest, Denise Murphy of Youngsville; 12 grandchildren.

FRANKLINVILLE - Pauline York Wright, 75, of 341 Sunrise Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Franklinville, where she was a member, with the Rev. Kenneth McNeill officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County and a retired secretary after 40 years with Burlington Industries.

Surviving are husband, James Riley Wright Sr.; son, James Riley Wright Jr. of Franklinville; daughter, Melissa Schwent of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Ina Y. Coward, Maxine Y. Benson and Mable Y. Blair, all of Franklinville; two grandchildren.

John P. Stokes
RICHMOND, Va. - John Powers Stokes, 88, of Richmond, Va., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at River Road United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A Masonic memorial service will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Scottish Rite Temple.

He was a native of Richmond, Va., the widower of Bernice Pollard Stokes, attended school in Kenbridge, Va., and attended McGuire's University and the University of Richmond. He was a Mason, Worshipful Master and its secretary for 51 years in Westhampton Lodge #302 AF & AM. He was a District Deputy Grand Master of the 15th Masonic District, Grand Master of Masons of Virginia, Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of Virginia, a past president of Grand Secretaries of North America and on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Home in Virginia. He was an honorary member of several blue lodges, a member of Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies where he was a 33rd degree Inspector General Honorary, the executive director and treasurer of the Eastern Star Home of Virginia, and a past Worthy Patron and past Worthy Grand Patron. He was a former member of the Exchange Club and its Board of Controls, Richmond Lions Club and its Board of Governors, Downtown Club of Richmond, Tri-County Riding Club, Commonwealth Club and the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce. He was owner and president of Buildings Equipment & Supply Corp. and BESCO Chemical Co., Inc., and was southern regional vice president of the International Sanitary Supply Association.

Surviving are wife, Frances Cahoon Stokes; brother, C. Warren Stokes of Kenbridge, Va.; sister, Frances S. Love of South Hill, Va.; stepsons, John L. Cahoon of Phoenix, Md., Hollis B. Cahoon of Greensboro, Lawrence G. Cahoon of Asheboro; five stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at Bennett Funeral Home, Richmond, Va., 6-8 p.m. Monday and 2-4 p.m. Tuesday.

Susan Hunt Bullins, 72, of 972 Bunting Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rushwood Park Wesleyan Church, where she was a member, with Dr. Ron Hamilton, the Rev. Donald Dawalt and the Rev. Paul Teague officiating. Entombment will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Troy, a Sunday school teacher at her church and was active in the church's nursery.

Surviving are husband, Roy O. Hunt of Asheboro; daughters, Winona B. Pierce and Darlene B. Holt, both of Asheboro; sons, Terry O. Bullins of Pleasant Garden, Darrell Steven Bullins of Salisbury; sister, Betty Shaw of Ramseur; brothers, J. C. Hunt of Caryville, Tenn., Jerry Hunt of Seagrove; two grandchildren.

He was a native of Montgomery County.

He was a native of Randolph County and employed at McMurray Fabrics in Aberdeen.

Ruby Frances Rumley King, 82, of Asheboro, formerly of Randleman, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Balfour Baptist Church, with the Rev. Aaron King, the Rev. C.L. King and the Rev. John Noble officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She made a significant contribution to the birth of two churches, Forest Park Baptist Church and Cedar Grove Baptist Church, worked as a Sunday School teacher and was a home missions worker in several states. She established a senior citizens organization in Randleman and also served as president of the Woman's Missionary Union of Randolph Baptist Association.

Surviving are daughter, Carol K. Thomas of New Hill; sons, William L. King of New Hill, Roger King of Trinity, Rev. C.L. King of Wilmington, Gaylon King of Raleigh; sister, Mildred R. Fogleman of Asheboro; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

RANDLEMAN - Bessie Crotts Skeen, 93, formerly of Sophia, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Sunbridge Care and Rehab for Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Jones County, Miss., the widow of Theodore Skeen, a homemaker and a member of Sophia Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Fay Faircloth of Sophia; sons, Arthur Skeen and Boyd Skeen, both of Sophia; sisters, Marie Davis of Archdale, Mary Lee Cooper of Sophia; six grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Lou S. Wischum
HIGH POINT - Lou Etta Swaney Wischum, 97, of 1110 Clyde Place, formerly of Wischum Way, Trinity, died Tuesday, Oct. 12, 1999, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Don Lloyd and Dr. Richard J. Crowder officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Joseph William Wischum, a registered private duty nurse, a 1926 graduate of the Burris School of Nursing in High Point and a nurse at Randolph Hospital and Burris and High Point hospitals. She was the founder, owner and operator of Baby Land Nursery, a member of the Rebakah Lodge, charter member of the Good Deed Club, Congeniality Club and the Nurses Association and was a member of the A.M. Idol Sunday School Class.

Surviving are daughter, Joanne W. Lea of High Point; sister, Flossie Anderson of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, 10-10:30 a.m. Thursday.

WINSTON-SALEM - James Robert Cockerham, 64, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999.

He was a native of Surry County, a U.S. Army veteran, was retired from the City of Winston-Salem in the utilities division and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Joann Abee Cockerham of the home; sons, Danny Davis of Asheboro, Ronnie Davis of Winston-Salem; sisters, Marie Steele and Nancy Teague, both of Elkin; stepmother, Vergie Cockerham of Elkin; three grandchildren.
