Susie S. Kearns
DENTON - Susie Sexton "Aunt Susie" Kearns, 97, of Jones Street, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Mountain Vista Health Park.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Collins, the Rev. Leon Stubbs and Dr. Arnold B. Lovell officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, the widow of Coy L. Kearns, with whom she owned and operated Biltwell Chair and Furniture Co. in Denton and was instrumental in planning the sanctuary of her church. She was a charter and life member of Denton Chapter #216 Order of the Eastern Star, a charter member of Denton Woman's Club and helped start the Christmas Community Love Feast.

Surviving are sisters, Rose S. DeLapp of Durham, Jewel S. Cranford of Thomasville.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of Stewart and Swannee Sexton, North Main Street, Denton.

Ralph Hester
LEXINGTON - Ralph Hester, 68, of Emerald Rock Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at his home.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, with the Rev. David Reid, the Rev. Edward Pigg and the Rev. Lamar Moore officiating. Burial will be in Arrington Heights Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Forsyth County, a truck driver for Billings Freight Systems, a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Linwood, a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Local Teamsters 391.

Surviving are wife, Dorothy Ann Barnes Hester of the home; daughters, Ann H. Cupp of Lexington, Brona H. Winchester of Savannah, Ga.; brothers, William McKinley Hester and Ernest Eugene Hester, both of Lexington; sister, Norma Hester Smith of Booneville; four grandchildren.

The family will be at the home in Asheboro 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, and other times at the home of Ann H. Cupp, 2101 Peacock Drive, Green Meadows Sub-Division, Lexington.

Emerson M. Albright
TROY - Dr. Emerson M. Albright, 82, of 1651 N.C. 24/27/109 West, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Montgomery Memorial Healthcare, Troy.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Southside Cemetery. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Troy, where he was a member, with the Rev. Raleigh Castelloe officiating.

He was a native of Allentown, Pa., an optometrist in the Town of Troy until his retirement and a member of Troy Masonic Lodge 718.

Surviving are wife, Sarah Albright of the home; stepsons, Bill Cooper of Mt. Airy, Jerry Thompson of Troy, Larry Thompson of Melbourne, Fla.; stepdaughter, Joanne T. Newsome of Denton; several stepgrandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home.

TROY - Mary Lynnette Martin, 25, of 917 Ophir Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Prospect Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Toney Parsons, the Rev. Lee Fish and the Rev. Melvin Morton officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County.

Surviving are parents, Donald L. and lleine B. Morris of the home; brother, Kevin Martin of Troy; grandfather, Arlis Brock of Troy.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

CARTHAGE - Letha P. Smith, of 3733 Union Church Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Vass Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert H. Ramey Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Johnson Grove Cemetery.

Surviving are son, Ronnie Patterson of the home; brother, Floyd Patterson of Carthage; sisters, Alberta Norton and Agnes Blocker, both of Carthage, Irene Cockman of Southern Pines.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Alvin V. Cross Sr.
Alvin Van Cross Sr., 67, of 626 Hawthorne Drive, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at his home.

There will be no funeral service.

He was a native of Asheboro, retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years and the Federal Reserve after 10 years, worked at the Randolph County Senior Adults Center and attended Landmark Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Iris Miller Cross; son, Alvin Van Cross Jr. of Dahlonega, Ga.; daughter, Linda Sue Cross of Earlington, Ky.; stepsons, Michael Walker of Asheboro, Jonathan Walker of Franklinville; stepdaughters, Paula Brown of Asheboro, Sharon Macon of Ramseur; brothers, Vernie Cross of Lasker, Bobby Cross of Cleveland, Ohio, Frankie Cross of Trinity, Joseph Cross and Douglas Cross, both of Asheboro, Jimmy Cross of Greensboro; sisters, Elizabeth Casstevens of Cleveland, Ohio, Barbara Brown of Harrison, Ark., Betty Morton of Asheboro; nine grandchildren.

Linda O. Vest
ROBBINS - Linda Owens Vest, 44, of 184 Brown Chapel Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at FirstHealth Moore Regional, Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Community Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Fred Richardson officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Community Baptist Church and was a carrier for The Courier-Tribune newspaper.

Surviving are husband, Ronnie Vest of Robbins; sons, Ron Vest and Jimmy Vest, both of Robbins; stepbrothers, Donnie Morgan and Charlie Morgan, both of Star; stepsisters, Geneva Freeman of Star, Mae Garner of Seagrove; one grandchild.

Phillips Funeral Home, Star, is in charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Harry E. Rosser Jr.
OXFORD, Miss. - Dr. Harry Edwin Rosser Jr., 83, of Oxford, Miss., died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Oxford, Miss.

Memorial service was 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Oxford, Miss., with the Rev. Sam Marshal and the Rev. Duncan M. Gray III officiating.

He was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., a graduate of Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., received his master's of Divinity degree at Princeton Theological Seminary and his doctorate degree at American University in Washington, D.C. He was assistant professor of Latin American Studies, Department of Spanish and Italian at the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, organizing minister and first pastor of Northminster United Presbyterian Church in Reisterstown, Md., associate pastor of Union Evangelical Church Mexico, D.F. and moderator of Presbytery of Baltimore, UPCUSA.

Surviving are wife, Catherine Kearns Rosser, formerly of Asheboro; daughter, Nancy Noble R. Hutchins of Sebastopol, Calif.; sons, Dr. Harry Lee Rosser of Newton, Mass., Thomas J. Rosser of Oxford, Miss.; brothers, William Noble Rosser of Willow Street, Pa., Thomas Earl Rosser of Baltimore, Md.; seven grandchildren.

Philip M. Demore
Philip Michael Demore, 73, of 739 Graceland Drive, Asheboro, formerly of Camillus, N.Y., died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Pirro & Sons Funeral Home, Syracuse, N.Y., and 10:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Dewitt, N.Y.

He was a native of Syracuse, N.Y., the widower of Arleita Van Slyke Demore, retired as a lieutenant of the Syracuse Fire Department after 33 years, was a member of Syracuse Firefighters Association Local 280 and was also employed by McMillan Book Co. and Brinks Security. He was a graduate of Vocational High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea.

Surviving are wife, Sandra E. Kephart Demore of the home; daughter, Valerie L. Christian of Fayetteville, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Pamela Ramsey of Virginia; stepson, Richard Sutler of North Carolina; sister, Anne Maracle of Brewerton, N.Y.; one grandson.

The family will be at Pirro & Sons Funeral Home, 514 Turtle St., Syracuse, N.Y., 4-7 p.m. Wednesday.

Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, was in charge of local arrangements.

Berrie S. Maxwell
Berrie Shea Maxwell, 33, of 1109 Rockridge Road, Asheboro, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at Clapp's Convalescent Nursing Home.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.

She was a 1984 graduate of Asheboro High School and a 1988 graduate of Converse College where she played on the tennis team.

Surviving are mother, Jane L. Maxwell of the home; grandmother, Porter S. Redding of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Samuel P. Saunders Jr.
TROY - Samuel P. Saunders Jr., 57, of 749 Eldorado St., died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Troy, where he was a member, with the Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will be in Flint Hill Church of God Cemetery, Troy.

He was a native of Montgomery County, retired after 20 years in the U.S. Army as a master sergeant where he was a Vietnam veteran and awarded the Purple Heart.

Surviving are sons, Samuel P. Saunders III of Troy, Todd C. Saunders of Asheboro, Brandon A. Saunders of Shelby; brothers, Jimmy Saunders of Troy, Larry Saunders of Greensboro.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at 1092 Ophir Road, Troy.

Melvin D. Yarboro
STAR - Melvin Delano Yarboro, 67, of 1072 Tarry Church Road, died Monday, Dec. 20, 1999, at the home of his daughter.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star. Burial will be in the Allen Family Cemetery.

He was a native of Moore County, a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

Surviving are daughter, Rebecca Bradshaw of Winston-Salem; sisters, Vera Eldis Scott of Galax, Va., Mary Lee Yarboro of Atlanta, Ga.; one grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Dennis C. Driscoll
CAPE CARTERET - Dennis Carl Driscoll, 78, of Cape Carteret and formerly of Asheboro, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at Carteret General Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home, Swansboro, with the Rev. Francis T. Connolly officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Seaside Memorial Park.

He was retired from G.E. after 30 years as a financial manager and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are wife, Helen W. Driscoll of the home; son, Dennis Patrick Driscoll of Cape Carteret; daughter, Catharine H. Myers of Leicester, England; brothers, Eugene Driscoll of Winterville, Maine, John Driscoll of New Orleans, La.; five grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7:30-9 p.m. Tuesday. A rosary will be said during this time.

Annie C. Johnson
RANDLEMAN - Annie Edna Cole Johnson, 90, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at the home of her daughter on 1787 Brittany Trail, Pleasant Garden.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Ron Kimble officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Industry, Ill., of the Baptist faith and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Harry P. Johnson of Julian, Richard Lee Johnson of Sophia; daughters, Ruth Johnson Mick of High Point, Mary Sue Johnson Sheets of Pleasant Garden, Barbara Johnson Jones of Greensboro, Katherine Johnson Bolanos of Franklinville; sister, Marie C. Bailey of Greensboro; half sister, Lois Tribble of Little Rock, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Elbert Christopher Cook of 1079 Green Farm Road, Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Darrell Summey officiating. Burial will be in Smyrna Grove Community Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Bryson City, employed with W.F. Mickey Body Company, High Point, was a member of Smyrna Grove Community Church and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Janice Trotter Cook of the home; daughters, April Santos of Asheboro, Christy Mata of Kernersville; sisters, Ella Mae Kirkland of Bryson City, Carolyn Rhodes of Thomasville, Mildred Newsom of Asheboro; brothers, Harold Cook of Bryson City, Kenneth Cook of Cullowhee, James Cook and Bobby Cook, both of North Carolina; one grandson.

RANDLEMAN - Edith Small Chappell, 63, of 579 Walter Meadows Road, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at her home.

She was a native of Randolph County, employee of Jockey International in Randleman, and a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Steve L. Chappell of Randleman; daughter, Kathy C. Bassett of Randleman; son, Randy Chappell of Asheboro; grandson, Shawn Davis of the home; sisters, Aileen S. Hunt of Sophia, Treva S. Swicord of California; brothers, Guy Small of Randleman, Jim Small of Ventura, Calif.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Dairell Reynolds
RANDLEMAN - Dairell Reynolds, 81, of 132 Spencer St., died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at his home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Virginia, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was retired from Phoenix Glass Company, Alliquippa, Pa.

Surviving are Louise Reynolds of the home; sons, Donald Lee Reynolds, Dairell Wayne Reynolds and Nelson Gale Reynolds, all of Randleman; daughters, Becky Kivett and Peggy Cross, both of Randleman, Carolyn Kenyon of Asheboro; brothers, Dewey Reynolds and Doug Reynolds, both of Danville, Va.; sister, Alvie Holt of Franklinville; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 10-11 a.m. Monday.

J. Swanson Kennedy
RAMSEUR - J Van Swanson Kennedy, 71, of 1328 West Ridge St., died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Richard Wright and the Rev. Adrian Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Knoll Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and retired with Ramseur Interlock after 47 years.

Surviving are wife, Eva P. Kennedy of the home; son, David Kennedy of Franklinville; daughter, Julia K. Rose of Ramseur; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

SILER CITY - DonL Mercer Johnson, 72, of 242 Mt. Vernon-Hickory Mountain Road, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Sun Bridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hickory Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Jason Cardwell officiating.

He was a native of Ohio, attended Hickory Mountain Baptist Church and retired from Boling Chair Company.

Surviving are brother, Nat H. Johnson of Staley; sisters, Alda J. Larson of Bremerton, Wash., Ella Mae Williams of Walford, S.C.

TROY - Hartsel Jasper Haywood, 72, of 437 Hicks Road, Candor, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Richmond Memorial Hospital, Rockingham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, with the Rev. Dexter Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Bruton Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, attended Holly Mount Baptist Church, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a retired spinner with Collins & Aikman Corp.

Surviving are wife, Hazel Bruton Haywood of the home; daughters, Ava H. Greene and Joan H. Allred, both of Candor; brother, Bob Haywood of Wadeville; sisters, Beulah Yarboro, Mae Williams, Ola Spinks, all of Mt. Gilead; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
