TROY - Fentress Russell, 87, of 688 Biscoe Road, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Montgomery Memorial Healthcare, Troy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Chuck Cook officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Troy Masonic Lodge #718, a retired volunteer fireman with the Troy Fire Department, a retired U.S. Post Office postal worker, a World War ll U.S. Army veteran and formerly employed with Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Inc.

Surviving are son, Lowell Russell of Troy; sisters, Sara Russell of Troy, Mary Hodges of Raleigh; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at 1680 Lovejoy Road, Troy.

Raeford Brown
TROY - Raeford Brown, 78, of 217 Shiloh Road, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Montgomery Memorial Healthcare, Troy.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Jim Sheets and the Rev. Douglas W. Beadle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Richmond County, a board member and Sunday School teacher at his church, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and retired as transportation manager with Montgomery Motors.

Surviving are sons, Harris Brown of Asheboro, Denny Brown of Biscoe; daughter, Pamela B. McQueen of Troy; brothers, Selby Brown and Jack Brown, both of Troy; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Billy H. Jordan
SILER CITY - Billy Howard Jordan, 35, of 567 Harold Andrews Road, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday, at Rocky River Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg W. Burriss officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County and employed with L.M.N./Stone Tech.

Surviving are son, B.J. Jordan of Staley; mother, Virgie Howard Jordan of Siler City; sisters, Shella J. Bowman and Sharon J. Booth, both of Siler City; grandmother, Mamie Jordan of Siler City; two nieces.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, and other times at Virgie Jordan's home on 549 Harold Andrews Road.

Susan H. Baker
MACUNGIE, Pa. - Susan Hinshaw Baker, 56, of Macungie, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, at Episcopal Church of the Mediator, Allentown, where she was a member.

She was a native of Randolph County, a teacher at Randleman Elementary School, a swim coach and instructor with Emmaus Aquatics Club in Emmaus, Pa., and a preschool teacher at First Baptist Church in Bethlehem, Pa.

Surviving are husband, William C. Baker of the home; mother, Golda Lee Hinshaw of Randleman; son, Chip Baker of Biscoe; daughters, Mitzi Baker and Mary Baker of the home, Paige Carter of Eagle Springs and Betsy Walts of Albany, Ga.; one grandchild.

Arrangements are being handled by Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home in Emmaus, Pa.

Kaul R. Clardy
STAR - Kaul Ray Clardy, 68, of 308 Dover Church Road, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Star Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Phil Staton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are wife, Mildred Clardy of Star; son, David Clardy of Douglasville, Ga; daughters, Cindy Cagle and Penny Gustason of Douglasville; brother, Jerry D. Clardy of Meridianville, Ga; sisters, Biddie Dawson of Tryon, Joyce Mullins, Helen Billions and Sue Acuff, all of Meridianville; step-son, Johnny Greene of Biscoe; step-daughter, Judy Powers of Biscoe; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family was at the Phillips Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Gilbert Snider
DENTON - Jacob Gilbert Snider, 57, of Salisbury Street, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at the home of his son in Kernersville.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Summerville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Raleigh Hayden and the Rev. Carlee Stallard officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at the church cemetery.

He was a retired Technical Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are sons, Jeff Snider of Winston-Salem, James Snider of Kernersville and Steven Snider of Denton; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Margaret S. Taylor
DENTON - Margaret Elizabeth Surratt Taylor, 62, of 25968 N.C. 8 South, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her home.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Alleghany United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Peter McGuire and the Rev. Randy Tingle officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Stanly County and was employed with Mountain Vista Health Park.

Surviving are husband, Wade D. Taylor of the home; daughters, Kim D. Covington and Sabrina A. Palmisano, both of Denton, and Pamela Gardner of Mt. Holly, N.J.; parents, Reather and Nellie Surratt of Denton; eight grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6-8 p.m. Sunday, and other times at the home.

Ted Dennis
Howard Theodore "Ted" Dennis, 90, of 3413 U.S. 220 Business South, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Crestview Wesleyan Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Alvin Brooks and the Rev. Wayne Vuncannon officiating. Burial will be at Hulda Baptist Church Cemetery.

He wa a retired carpenter and the widower of Iona Graves Dennis.

Surviving are daughters, Donnie Jean Brower of Asheboro, and Rachel Stine of Fairbanks, Alaska; son, Jacob Dennis of Coleman, Texas; brothers, Albert Dennis of Oak Ridge, Authur Dennis of Asheboro; sister, Iris Hunt of Asheboro; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Mildred Teague
STALEY - Mildred "Millie-Hud" Teague, 68, of 267 J.C. Teague Road, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Sun Bridge Care Facilities, Siler City.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, with the Rev. Roger Riffe officiating. Burial will be at Moon's Chapel Baptist Cemetery.

She was a native of New Jersey, and a retired airline attendant and supervisor with Eastern Airlines.

Surviving are sister, Dolores Jones of Staley.

Martha J. Rodgers
LIBERTY - Martha Jenkins Rodgers, 79, of Liberty Village Apartment E-1, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.

The family was at Farrar Funeral Home in Siler City from 7-8 p.m. Saturday.

Dorothy R. Compton
TROY - Dorothy Elizabeth Richardson Compton, 85, of 1025 Tower Road, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at her home.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Randy Lopshire officiating. Burial will be Thursday in Meadville, Pa.

She was a native of Albany, N.Y., and the widow of Oscar L. Compton.

Surviving are sons, Norman L. Compton Sr. and Garry D. Compton, both of Troy; daughters, Margaret A. Francis of New York, Viola E. Lucas and Patricia L. Hoover, both of Troy, and Ginger L. Abbott of Pennsylvania; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, other times at the home.

Michael L. Maness
Michael Lynn Maness, 39, of 156 E. Academy St., Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington, with Dr. Gene Huffsinger officiating.

He was a native of Alamance County, a graduate of Asheboro High School and the Randolph Community College computer science program and a member of First Assembly Church, Asheboro.

Surviving are mother and stepfather, Jeanette and Ralph Deutsch of Asheboro; father and stepmother, Jim and Pat Maness of Asheboro; sister, Lisa M. Wentz of Allentown, Pa.; grandfather, James L. Maness of Winston-Salem.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Elma A. Tally
Elma Zorada Auten Tally, 79, of 1186 Oakwood Acres Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Christopher Thore and the Rev. Byron Alexander officiating. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. at Cold Springs United Methodist Church in Concord.

She was a native of Cabarrus County, the widow of Albert L. Tally, a former member of Cold Springs UMC in Concord where she was a youth counselor, member of the choir and was president of United Methodist Women with a lifetime membership, and she was retired from Pinehurst Textiles.

Surviving are daughter, Doris Lucas of the home; sisters, Louise Miller and Mary Carter, both of Concord; three grandsons; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home and in the fellowship hall at Cold Springs UMC in Concord after the graveside service.

James F. Thorpe Jr.
CEDAR FALLS - James Forrest Thorpe Jr., 62, of 3785 Old Cedar Falls Road, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur.

Sally M. Frank
DENTON - Sally Mae Frank, 87, of 252 W. Salisbury St., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Mountain Vista Health Park.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Joe Collins officiating. Burial will be in Denton Town Cemetery.

She was a native of Davidson County, former choir member and Worship Committee chairman at her church, a graduate of Denton High School, attended Women's College in Greensboro and was a retired administrative assistant with the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.

James G. Landis
LIBERTY - James Gordon Landis, 70, of 611 S. Fayetteville St., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, in Rex Hospital, Raleigh.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. Alfred Kimbrel and the Rev. Frank Moss officiating.

He was a native of Henry County, Ill., of the Methodist faith, umpired and refereed several N.C. high school sports and was a recreation league umpire and referee. He coached Little League football in New Bern and Laurinburg, Little League baseball in Laurinburg and men's softball in Sanford.

Surviving are wife, Harriet Brummett Landis of the home; daughters, Deborah Creedy of North Bennington, Vt., Evelyn Snyder of Hampton, Va.; sons, Dr. Wayne Landis of Bellingham, Wash., James Galen Landis of Warsaw, William Petty of Sanford; sisters, JoAnn Hadank of Peoria Heights, Ill., Gale Robins of Liberty; 11 grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Annie P. Wilson
STALEY - Annie Freeman Patterson Wilson, 84, of Staley and formerly of Archdale, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Lonnie Patterson and John Robert "Bob" Wilson and was retired from Silver Knit Hosiery Co. in High Point.

Surviving are stepson, Randall Johnson of Archdale; sisters, Mamie Hare and Nellie Bean, both of Seagrove, Lee B. Freeman, Stacy Cornelison, Conie King, Mildred Chriscoe and Rachel Smith, all of Asheboro, Gladys McLeod of Star; brothers, Joe G Freeman, Dempsey Freeman and Wesley Freeman, all of Asheboro; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the stepson, 514 Belmont Drive, Archdale, and at the home of Mildred Chriscoe, 1085 Crestview Church Road, Asheboro.

Kathryn J. Dickens
RALEIGH - Kathryn Johnson Dickens, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Mayview Convalescent Center, Raleigh.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Methodist Church, Thomasville.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Arthur Tysinger Dickens, a graduate of Liberty High School, attended Guilford College and East Carolina Teachers College and later the graduate school of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for social work. She was a teacher at Pilot School in Thomasville, a social worker for the blind and visually handicapped in Davidson County, a president of the Business and Professional Women's Club and a Hospice volunteer. She was the recipient of Thomasville's first handicapped-person-of-the-year award, honored by Gov. Jim Hunt for her volunteer work, the 1960 Outstanding Citizen of Thomasville and was given the key to the city of Thomasville.

Surviving are daughter, Marian Oakley of Raleigh; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Capital Funeral Care and Cremation Society of the Carolinas was in charge of the arrangements.

James D. Brown
LILLINGTON - James David Brown, 57, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fayetteville.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Raven Rock Presbyterian Church, with Dr. Jerry Vuncannon, Dr. Dawes Graybeal and the Rev. Mark Morris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County.

Surviving are wife, Felecia T. Brown of the home; daughter, LeAnn B. Blackmon of Lillington; sons, James Nathan "Bucky" Brown and Temple Scott Brown, both of Lillington; mother, Katherine Brown of Lillington; three grandchildren.

The family will be at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home, Lillington, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Carl Presnell
Carl Presnell, 77, of 847 Morgan Ave., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

No services will be held at this time.

He was a native of Greenville, S.C. and retired from No Sag Spring Company in High Point.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Presnell of High Point; daughter, Debora Hagar of High Point; sons, James C. Presnell of Sophia, John W. Presnell of High Point; sister, Violet Beauchamp of Maryland; brother, Luther Presnell of Maryland; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of the arrangements.

Bob Swaim
Paul Robert "Bob" Swaim, 80, of 704 Britt Ave., Asheboro, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Boyd Stokes and the Rev. Bret Cogan officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Nance Chevolet after 36 years and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are wife, Loucille Swaim of the home; daughters, Phyllis Martin of Utica, Ky., Paula Scarboro of Asheboro, Pat Baucom of Charlotte; son, Bob Swaim Jr. of Apex; sister, Mary Ellen Kindley of Rockingham; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.
