CARTHAGE - Ruth Emma Jackson Frye Sorensen, 96, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Pinelake Health Care and Rehabilitation, Carthage.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Victory Baptist Church, with the Rev. Max Gilmore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Boston, Mass.

Surviving are daughters, Elisabeth Ann Frye Harrison of Carthage, Louise Frye Guild of Fort Collins, Colo., Margaret F. Frye of Carthage, Ruth Fyre Harrison of Colerain; sons, William Roger Frye of Pinehurst, David Samuel Frye of Colerain, Jesse Jackson Frye of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 29 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Joseph M. McAlister

BENNETT - Joseph Marshall McAlister, 22, of Kissimmee, Fla., formerly of 4549 Lambeth Mill Road, Bennett, died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, from injuries received in a tornado that devastated Osceola County, Florida.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Parks Cross Roads Christian Church, with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Portsmouth, Va., a member of Brush Creek Baptist Church and was employed as a roofer.

Surviving are parents, Joe B. and JoAnn Sealey McAlister of Bennett; son, Seth Marshall McAlister of Bennett; brothers, Edward L. Agnor of Virginia Beach, Va., James Schnur of Kissimmee, Fla.; sisters, Leola Patrice McGee of Fuquay Varina, Margaret D. McAlister of Granite Falls, Bonnie D. Agnor of Bennett.

The family will be at Joyce-Brady Funeral Home, Bennett, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home on 4549 Lambeth Mill Road, Bennett.

ABERDEEN - Ruth Thomas McCaskill, 76, of Apt. 5A Magnolia Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westside Baptist Church of Red Springs, with the Rev. Eric Rich and the Rev. Sandy Yow officiating. Burial was in Alloway Cemetery.

She was a native of Candor and employed with Moore Department Store for 15 years.

Surviving are husband, Warren McCaskill of Aberdeen; daughters, Annette Jordan of Grayson, Ga., Kathy Fujiwara of Burlington, Debby Lamb of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brothers, Gurney Thomas of Lowell, Ed Thomas of Lexington; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Red Springs Funeral Home, Red Springs, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jesse T. Robbins Sr.

WARWICK, R.I. - Jesse T. Robbins Sr., 64, of Lloyd Avenue, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at Warwick Health Center.

Funeral service was 10 a.m. Tuesday at Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, Warwick, R.I. Burial was in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, with full military honors.

He was a native of Asheboro, a Korean War U.S. Navy veteran and a burner-grinder for 17 years at Electric Boat, Quonset, R.I.

Surviving are wife, Shirley M. Sanders Robbins; son, Jesse T. Robbins Jr. of Warwick, R.I.; daughters, Patricia C. Robbins, Susan June Robbins, both of Warwick, R.I.; brother, Coy Robbins of Asheboro; sisters, Esther Cooper, Linda Simmons, both of Asheboro; four grandchildren.

Louise M. Poole
Louise McBride Poole, 87, of Mountain View Care Center, Asheboro, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Union United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. William Taylor and the Rev. Lee Roy Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Lee County, retired from Sew Special and the widow of Colvin Eugene Poole.

Surviving are daughters, Rosia Luther of Jacksonville, Fla., Linda Millikan of Level Cross and Artie Phillips of Asheboro; sons, Eugene Poole and Bobby Poole, both of Asheboro; sisters, Lora Mae Groschola of Des Moines, Iowa, and Bellma Allred of Asheboro; brothers, Hampton McBride, Thurman McBride and Willis McBride, all of Asheboro; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday.

William H. Upchurch Sr.

William Howell "Bill" Upchurch Sr., 82, of 335 E. Rich Ave., Asheboro, died March 1, 1998.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. A.J. Kendrick and the Rev. Dwayne Hinshaw officiating. Burial with full Masonic rites will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Stanly County, a graduate of Mt. Gilead High School, a former manager of Queen City Coach Co. and a former employee of Walter Huber and of First National Bank of Randolph County. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was a member of the men's Sunday school class at First Wesleyan Church. He was a Mason, a member of Asheboro Lodge 669, a member of the Randolph Chapter of the Eastern Star and a Shriner.

Surviving are wife, Minnie Tyner Upchurch of the home; daughters, Reba Wieters of Milledgeville, Ga., and Rena Whitehead of Ramseur; son, William Howell "Bill" Upchurch Jr. of Pinnacle; brother, Harry Upchurch of Norwood; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Belch Talbert of Edenton, Nellie Stoker of Albemarle and Louise Zartman of Newmantown, Pa.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday.

SILER CITY - Josie Whitt Buckner, 96, of 207 S. Second Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith and Buckner Chapel, with the Rev. Thomas Sweeley officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Park.

She was a native of Chatham County, retired from Paul Braxton School, and a member of First United Methodist Church and the Wren Bible Class.

Surviving are daughter, Sara Frances Andrews of Burlington; son, Gyles R. Buckner of Liberty; sister, Jessie Whitt Scott of Haw River; three granddaughters; two great-grandsons.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Monday.

Edgar Goins

MOUNT AIRY - Edgar Goins, 90, of 256 Southview Drive, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Friendly Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he was a member, in Mount Airy with the Rev. Roby Wilcox, the Rev. Bud Whitfield and the Rev. Otis Goins officiating. Burial will be in Midkiff Cemetery.

He was a native of Surry County, a retired self-employed carpenter and the widower of Geneva Childress Goins.

Surviving are sisters, Maggie Whitfield of High Point and Verlie Martinez of Biscoe.

The family will be at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy 7-9 p.m. Monday.

D. Leonard Laughlin

RANDLEMAN - David Leonard Laughlin, 81, of 1049 Caudle Road, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Randolph Memorial Park, with the Rev. Alvin Newcomb officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Laughlin Hosiery Mill, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a member of First Wesleyan Church of Randleman, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1960 in High Point and the Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving are wife, Dorothy Stone Laughlin of the home; son, David Lloyd Laughlin of Randleman; sisters, Irene Nelson of Randleman and Edith Mahaley Rice of Greensboro; two grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Monday and other times at the home.

Jane R. Shaw

TROY - Jane Russell Shaw, 72, of 752 Dennis St., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Troy, where she was a member, with the Rev. William Church and the Rev. A.T. Robertson officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Paul Shaw of Troy; sons, Wayne Shaw and Paul Shaw Jr., both of Troy; sisters, Wilmer Ray of Roxboro and Lucille Hurley of Troy; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

LIBERTY - Mary Kimrey Smith, 78, of 8838 Hinshaw Shop Road, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel in Liberty, with the Rev. Duane Partin and the Rev. Barbara Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Gaston County, a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, retired from Acme Hosiery Mill and the widow of Roy L. Kimrey and Walter V. Smith.

Surviving are daughter, Brenda Kimrey Moon of Graham; sisters, Cora Crews of Dallas, Hazel White and Tencie Lineberger, both of Cherryville, Kathryn Blue of Gastonia and Betty Hall of Badin Lake; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Monday and other times at the residence of Brenda Moon, 311 Doggett Drive, Graham.

LEXINGTON - Mary Ellen Cook Sumner, 90, of 259 Sumner Lane, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Briggs Funeral Home Chapel in Denton, with the Rev. John Wheless officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Surry County, a retired furniture worker and homemaker, of the Primitive Baptist faith, and the widow of Clyde G. Sumner.

Surviving are son, Troy Sumner Sr. of Lexington; daughters, Pauline Hedrick and Norma Bentley, both of Lexington; brothers, Hoston Cook of Powhatan, Va., and Layman Cook of Mount Airy; sister, Faye Tilley of Kernersville; nine half-brothers; six half-sisters; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday and other times at the residence.

Jacob E. Taylor

STALEY - Jacob Eugene Taylor, 15, of 5164 U.S. 421 North, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith and Buckner Chapel, with the Rev. Hayes Ritter officiating. Burial will follow in Deep River Baptist Church Cemetery in Coleridge.

He was a native of Chatham County.

Surviving are parents, Donnie and Debbie Hiatt Taylor; brother, Russell Taylor of Bear Creek; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Hiatt Sr. of Siler City and Sadie Bordeaux of Staley.

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Rita Isabel Garletts, 79, of 730 Virginia Ave., died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Nancy Kirby, at 1721 Tot Hill Farm Road, Asheboro.

Memorial service will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Brian Hauk officiating.

She was a native of Pollock, Idaho, a graduate of the University of Idaho, and retired after 25 years from the U.S. Forestry Service.

Surviving are daughters, Linda Jo Vacheresse of Clinton, Md., and Nancy Kirby of Asheboro; sons, Alan Ross Garletts of Cooper City, Fla., and Terry Stephen Garletts of Harrisonburg, Va.; sisters, Ada Wilson of Whitebird, Idaho, and Irene Mitchell of Lewiston, Idaho; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ARCHDALE - Marjorie Brewer Johnson, 70, of Westwood Health and Rehabilitation, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Burial will be in Belmont, Miss., at a later date.

She was a native of Randolph County and a member of Glenola Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Archie Johnson of High Point; daughters, Sandra Holcomb of Belmont, Miss., April Hess and Robin Hughes; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

TROY - Kathryn Ann Parsons Loftin, 56, of 758 N.C. 109, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Long Hill Baptist Church, were she was a member, with the Rev. Larry Beaver and the Rev. Toney Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

Surviving are husband, William "Bill" Clete Loftin Jr.; daughters, Elizabeth Rummage of Albemarle and Tammy Howell of Troy; sons, William Clete Loftin III and Richard Loftin, both of Troy; mother, Pearl Dennis Parsons of Troy; sister, Brenda Sanders of Biscoe; brothers, Garrett Parsons and Johnny Parsons, both of Troy, Jody Parsons of Ether, the Rev. Toney Parsons of Denton and Doug Parsons of Star; three grandchildren.

She was a retired employee of Robinson Poultry Farm.

Surviving are husband, George W. Robinson of the home; brother, Farley East of Mt. Gilead; sisters, Peggy Thompson of Norwood and Edna Andrews of Washington; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
