LIBERTY - Lee S. Carroll, 79, of 648 S. Fayetteville St., died at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday in the National Cemetery in Salisbury.

He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years as a Master Sergeant, he was the widower of Evelyn Carroll, involved with Gideons International and drove a school bus for Liberty School for many years.

Surviving are sons, William L. Carroll of Lyndhurst, N.J., the Rev. James E. Carroll of Lyons, N.Y., Roger C. Carroll of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister, Geraldine Jones of Interlakin, N.Y.; brother, Frank Carroll of Ossining, N.Y.; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Thomas Farrar Sr.
STALEY - Thomas "T.R." Farrar Sr., 78, of 500 Shady Grove Church Road, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Wesley Chapel Christian Fellowship Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. J.L. Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a deacon at his church and a member of the Gospel Messengers.

Surviving are wife, Bonnie W. Farrar; daughters, Brenda F. Alston and Sharon F. Spinks, both of Siler City, Debra F. Jordan of Houston, Texas, Kathy F. Cotten of Fayetteville, Bonita F. Baldwin of Ramseur; sons, Thomas Farrar Jr. of Siler City, George E. Farrar of Columbus, Ohio, Frankie L. Farrar of Staley, Ricky D. Farrar of Ramseur; sister, Peggy F. Price of Siler City; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at First Missionary Baptist Church, Siler City, 7-8 p.m. Friday.

JACKSON SPRINGS - Matthew Lee Jones, infant son of Erine Wayne and Naomi Randle Jones of Thomas Road, failed to survive birth, Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Graveside service was 2 p.m. Friday at Eagle Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Zeb Moss officiating.

Gilbert Clark
CANDOR - Gilbert Clark, 88, of Dowd Street, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Carolina House.

Graveside service was 3 p.m. Friday at Jackson Springs Cemetery, with the Rev. Edsel Huffstetler officiating.

He was a native of Moore County, had worked as manager of Crest Fruit Co. in Alamo, Texas, and was a member of Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are wife, Josephine Austin Clark of the home; son, Gilbert Clark Jr. of Summit, N.J.; daughter, Elizabeth C. Will of Denver, Colo.; three grandchildren.

There will be no family visitation.

Rubin J. McDaniel
GASTONIA - Rubin "RJ" Johnson McDaniel, 74, of 416 N. Highland, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Rehabilitation and Health Center, Gastonia.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Pisgah ARP Church Cemetery, Gastonia, with the Rev. Phil McCoy officiating.

He was a native of Pittsylvania, Va., the widower of Kathryn Alexander Stowe McDaniel, a former member of the Auctioneer Association, a member of Linden ARP Church, a U.S. Navy veteran and a former antique dealer.

Surviving are daughter, Jackay McDaniel of Gastonia; brothers, Lewis McDaniel of Ramseur, Allen McDaniel; sisters, Magdalene Norris of Asheboro, Francis Hall and Virginia Luther, both of Ramseur; two grandchidren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Greene Funeral Service, Westside Chapel, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Saturday.

Walter Norman Pardue, 67, of 327 Starr Court, Asheboro, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. at Belews Creek Baptist Church, Belews Creek, where he was a member, with the Rev. Mike Neal officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Stokes County, retired from Hooker Furniture in Kernersville and was a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Pardue of the home; brother, Jarvis Pardue of Kernersville.

Walter Preimats
Walter Preimats, 88, of 204 Shamrock Road, Asheboro, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

There will be a private family service.

He was a civil engineer, a native of Latvia and graduated with honors from the University of Latvia. He emigrated to Asheboro where he worked as a self-employed engineer in a tri-state area. He was the structural engineer for many local and regional building projects, including the original Greensboro Coliseum; Lindley Park, Asheboro Middle, Teachey, McCrary, and Hopewell elementary Schools; and several buildings on the Randolph Community College campus. In 1983 he was honored for his contributions to structural engineering in North Carolina by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Surviving are wife, Mirdza Preimats of the home; daughter, Rudite Robinson of Okemos, Mich.; son, Peter Preimats of Asheboro; two granddaughters.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Eunice R. Wilson
Eunice Rorie Wilson, 71, of 403 Charles Ave., Asheboro, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Wayne Vuncannon officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Hoke County, the widow of James E. Wilson, a member of Balfour Baptist Church and was retired from Burlington Industries.

Surviving are sons, Jerald E. Wilson of Elizabethtown, J. David Wilson of Asheboro, Robin M. Wilson of Salisbury; sister, Bessie D. Parks of Raeford; brothers, Floyd Rorie of Vass, O.W. Rorie of Rockingham; six grandchildren.

Charles J. York
RANDLEMAN - Charles Junior York, 69, of 102 River Park Drive, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

A private service will be held.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from Ramtex and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are wife, Nettie York of Randleman; sons, Dennis Hudson of the home, Charles York and Shane York, both of Randleman, William York of Fayetteville; sisters, Peggy Westmoreland and Nancy Beck, both of Randleman, Mary Ann Johnson of Franklinville; brother, Jimmy York of Ramseur; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home.

JULIAN - E. Preston Welker, 80, of 3326 Alamance Church Road, died Thursday, March 2, 2000.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty. Burial will be in Mt. Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a retired employee of Bates Nightware and was a member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ.

Surviving are wife, Marie "Susie" Vaughn Welker; son, Ernest Ricky Welker of Julian; sister, Martha Frye of Greensboro.

Paul W. Burgess
PLEASANT GARDEN - Paul Woodrow Burgess, 87, of 1469 Talbot Road, died Friday, March 3, 200O, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Guilford Memorial Park, with the Rev. Ken Culberson and the Rev. Gordon Miller officiating.

He was a World War II U. S. Army veteran, retired from Freeman Ford and Smith Motor Company and he attended Christ Wesleyan Church, Greensboro.

Surviving are wife, Marceal Scott Burgess of the home; sisters, Lois Caudle of Liberty, Ruth Novak of Valrico, Fla.; brother, Dean Burgess of Staley.

Thomas F. Bayles Jr.
SILER CITY - Thomas Fonrose Bayles Jr., 59, of 1205 York St., died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek, with the Rev. David Price and the Rev. Vinson Price officiating.

He was a native of Washington, D.C., a member of the National Guard and a member of the Siler City Moose Lodge.

Surviving are wife, Allne Price Bayles of Siler City; sons, Thomas F. Bayles III of Louisa, Va., Jeffrey Bayles of Manassas, Va.; daughters, Patty Strouse and Bonnie Gundersen, both of Pennsylvania, Darlene Clark of Thomasville, Cindy Baxter of Burlington; sister, Helen A. Powel of Winchester, Va.; several grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, noon-1 p.m. Monday prior to the service, other times at the home.

ROBBINS - Leon Wilson Haywood, 87, of 135 Green St., died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ernest Ferrell and the Rev. C. Gene Booker officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

He was a native of Stanly County, a member of Elise Masonic Lodge #555 and retired from Milliken Company.

Surviving are wife, Jessie Garner Haywood; daughter, Mildred H. Tschopp of York, Pa.; sons, L. Stanley Haywood of Asheboro, Jerry E. Haywood of Robbins; sister, Beulah H. McGary of Champlain, N.Y.; brothers, Lawson L. Haywood of Ellerbe, Leslie P. Haywood of High Point; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Randolph County, employed with Klaussner Furniture Industries, Inc. and a member of Franklinville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are husband, George Cox of the home; sons, David Cox of Ramseur, Michael Cox of Asheboro, Jimmy Cox of Pisgah; father, Andrew J. Callicutt of Franklinville; brother, Charles Callicutt of Randleman; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home of David Cox, 530 Columbia Ave., Ramseur.

CHARLOTTE - Maurice Odell Caton, 82, formerly of Winston-Salem and Asheboro, died Friday, March 3, 2000, at Hunter Woods Nursing Home in Charlotte.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Knollwood Baptist Church, Winston-Salem.

He was a native of Beaufort County, the widower of Dare Bumgarner Caton, a graduate of N.C. State University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and retired from the N.C. State Board of Health. He attended Ayden First Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Asheboro and Knollwood Baptist Church. He was a member of the Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina.

Surviving are daughters, Laura Hinshelwood of Germantown, Tenn., Kathryn Brown of Charlotte; four grandchildren.

The family will be at the church following the service.

She was a native of Horry County, S.C., and the widow of Hosea J. Coleman.

Coleman and Burnett Coleman, both of Tabor City; daughter, Barbara Childers of Asheboro; brothers, Pedro Lancaster and Rudolph Lancaster, both of Green Sea, S.C., Bill Lancaster of Tabor City; sisters, Ila Pearl Strickland of Tabor City, Lila Earl Duncan of Whiteville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

She was a native of Watauga County, the widow of Ralph Elbert Lyons, a former member of Enderly Park Baptist Church and Jackson Park Baptist Church in Charlotte and had been employed at Nebel's Clothing Store and Belk's of Charlotte.

Surviving are son, Sanford "Sandy" Mast Lyons of Elijay, Ga., daughters, Anne Melton of Mt. Holly, Arzelle Hoos of Asheboro, Donna Setzer of Bessemer City, Judy Walker of North Wilkesboro; sister, Gladys T. Mast of Vilas; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

He was the owner and operator of Whitaker Shoes, which operated for many years in downtown Asheboro and the widower of Lucille Wallace Whitaker.

Surviving are wife, Jenny Whitaker of Asheboro; daughter, Teana Halby of Greenville, N.C.; stepsons, Christopher Wishon of High Point, Patrick Wishon of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Myrtle Nance of Franklinville, Bertha Kirkman of Asheboro, brothers, Odell Whitaker of Randleman, Thurman Whitaker of Asheboro; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter.
