MT. GILEAD - Vernonica Blacius Baucom, 89, of Monroe, died Thursday, April 6, 2000, at Union Regional Medical Center, Monroe.

Funeral service was 3 p.m. Sunday at Friendship Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

He was a native of Anson County, former member of Meltonville Missionary Baptist Church and on the trustee board at his present church. He organized the Brotherhood Organization and the Men's Bible class and was a Mason of Hope Lodge #32 PHA. He attended Sedalia Junior College, N.C. A & T State, Johnson C. Smith and Appalachian State universities, taught at Peabody Academy in Troy, and was also a welder, farmer, businessman and merchant.

Surviving are wife, Grace McRae Baucom of the home; sons, Oscar Lamar Baucom and Auther Lamarr Baucom, both of Monroe; sisters, Mrs. Bleake Allen and Mrs. Worthy Jackson, both of Monroe, Mrs. Orzie Hunter of Charlotte; brothers, Jethro Funderburk of Charlotte, D.B. Funderburk of Monroe; one granddaughter; five great-grandchildren.

Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert L. Jarrell
MT. GILEAD - Robert Lee Jarrell, 76, of Evans Rest Home, died Sunday, April 9, 2000, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Turnmire officiating.

He was a retired employee of Mt. Gilead Brick Co.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Hazel E. Strickland
DURHAM - Hazel Eaddy Strickland, 92, died Saturday, April 8, 2000, in Hillcrest Convalescent Center, Durham.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Morris Funeral Home, Hemingway, S.C., with the Rev. Mel Flail officiating. Burial will be in Old Johnsonville Cemetery.

She was a native of Johnsonville, S.C., a graduate of Winthrop College and of High Point College, with an A.B. degree. She received her master's from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hil and completed postgraduate studies at Duke University and University of Virginia. She was a supervisor of the school systems in Randolph and Alamance counties, a teacher in Asheboro and Charlotte, a lifetime member of NEA & NCNEA and Alpha Delta Pi sorority and a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte.

Surviving are son, Robert L. Strickland of Winston-Salem; daughter, Frances S. Redding of Durham; sisters, Audrey E. Parsons of Greenwood, S.C., Nella Rae E. Faircloth of Charlotte, Geraldine E. Patterson of Columbia; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Hope S. Poole
Frances Hope Satterfield Poole, 42, of 1968 Poole Town Road, Asheboro, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with Dr. Ron Hamilton and Gilbert Coltrane officiating. Burial will be in West Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Danville, Va., a homemaker, attended West Chapel United Methodist Church and was the owner of Friendly Acres Farm.

Surviving are husband, Randy C. Poole of the home; daughter, Brenda Lee Smith of the home; stepdaughter, Lora Poole Harris of Asheboro; stepsons, Kevin Poole of Asheboro, Alan Poole and Michael Poole, both of the home; parents, Bernard and Vivian Wilson Satterfield of Greensboro; brother, Dale Satterfield of Greensboro; one granddaughter.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Rev. Garland C. Allred
FRANKLINVILLE - The Rev. Garland Clyde Allred, 76, of 1909 Whites Memorial Road, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Whites Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Kivett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, owner and operator of Allred's Plant Farm for 45 years, a Baptist minister for 25 years and was the minister of Strait Way Baptist Church, where he was a member.

Surviving are wife, Maleta Staley Allred of the home; daughter, Donna Sue Allred of the home; sisters, Crayteen Brown and Betty Harris, both of Franklinville.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Steven F. Ledbetter
FRANKLINVILLE - Steven Farrell Ledbetter, 41, of 2012 Whites Memorial Road, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur.

William C. Fields
RAMSEUR - William CIarence Fields, 51, of 129 Lee Layne Road, died Monday, March 6, 2000, at 345 Fields Country Road, Bear Creek.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meroney United Methodist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek, with the Rev. Clark Davis officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Chatham Central High School, retired from Ramtex Inc. and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are father, Herbert Fields of Bear Creek; brothers, James H. "Rabbit" Fields Jr. and Robert Fields, both of Siler City, David Fields of Goldston; sister, Patti Seagroves and Brenda Shaw, both of Bear Creek.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home of the father, 345 Fields Country Road, Bear Creek.

Anne W. Sandler
CLIMAX - Anne Welborn Sandler, 71, of 1434 N.C. 62 East, died Monday, March 6, 200O, at her home.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Monnett Road Baptist Church. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park, Julian.

She was of the Baptist faith and retired from the Georgia Army National Guard with 30 years of service.

Surviving are daughter, Sandra S. Lee of Climax; sister, Sarah Spain of Atlanta, Ga.; brothers, Waymon Welborn of Carrabelle, Fla., Jesse Welborn of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren.

Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, is in charge of the arrangements.

SILER CITY - Minnie "Polly" Smith Brown, 73, of 3465 Bonlee-Bonnett Road, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brush Creek Baptist Church, Bear Creek, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gerald Bridges, the Rev. Walter Jones and the Rev. Dwight Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of San Antonio, Texas, and the widow of Troy H. Brown.

Surviving are daughters, Mary Swaim and Carlean Tucker, both of Siler City, Nancy Dunlap of Bonlee, Barbara Cheek of Bennett, Alice Beavers of Bear Creek; son, the Rev. Troy Edward Brown of Coleridge; sisters, Florence, Betty Lou, Johnnylee and Josephine, all of Texas; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, other times at the home.

Rev. Betsy L. Cheek
SILER CITY - The Rev. Betsy Lane Cheek of 782 Lane-Jordan Road, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jordan Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Gene Horton officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the Leader of Leaders in the church and a former pastor of Thompson Chapel. She was a former Sunday School Adult Class teacher, a member of the Harmonetts, a Lay Council member, a missionary, organizer for the Community 9 a.m. hour of prayer and was a member of the Ministerial Alliance.

Surviving are daughters, Delores Branch and Nora Berry, both of Siler City; sons, Johnny F. Cheek of Clinton, Md., Garret H. Cheek, Benjamin. M. Cheek, Perry C. Cheek, all of Siler City; brother, Jonah Lane of Siler City; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 7-8 p.m. Tuesday.

Farrar Funeral Home, Siler City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Wesley L. Smith
MT. GILEAD - Wesley Laverne Smith, 75, of 319 Onville Road, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at Duke Medical Center, Durham.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Parsons Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Max Wood officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a retired tool and die maker.

Surviving are wife, Bois Parsons Smith of the home; son, Mark Smith of Mt. Gilead; daughters, Linda S. Lindsey of Mansfield, Ohio, Deborah S. Moore of Raleigh; sisters, Betty Jean Suggs and Rachel Warner, both of Troy, Bernice Hurley of Maiden, Irene Nordan and Mary Greene, both of Mt. Gilead; six grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Mallie B. Cole
CAMERON - Mallie Bennett Cole, 90, of N.C. 24-27, died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cameron Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Madeline Peacock and the Rev. Greg Newton officiating. Burial will be in Cameron Cemetery.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Carolyn C. Talbert of Whispering Pines, Katie C. Frye of Carthage; son, Bobby Cole of Cameron; brother, Curtis Bennett of Cameron; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Jessie B. Ingram
GREENSBORO - Jessie Belle Ingram, 87, of 1001 Ross Ave., died Saturday, March 25, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Roper Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Jerry Dowdy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Accelia Hall, Carrie Ingram and Juanita Wright, all of Greensboro, Shirley Ingram and Margaret Ingram, both of Newark, N.J.; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-8 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Lewis and Phyllis Little, N.C. 109 South, Mt. Gilead.

Lillian O. Norton
TROY - Lillian Odom Norton, 78, of 923 Lindsey Drive, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Norman Livengood Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Suggs Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Star.

She was a native of Richmond County and a retired cook.

Surviving are half brother, Willie W. Williamson of Seagrove; half sister, Ada Robbins of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

Maxine T. Alexander
MT. GILEAD - Maxine T. Alexander, 76, of 199 Twin Oaks Lane, died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at Britthaven of Piedmont in Albemarle.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Thomas Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Colon Haywood officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are John B. Jordan of the home; sisters, Hazel Montgomery of Mt. Gilead, Sarah Chadwick of Jamaica Queens, N.Y.

The family will be at Harris Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, and at the church 1-2 p.m. Thursday.

Doris J. Tolen
Doris Jean Tolen, 67, of 613 W. Wainman Ave., Asheboro, died Friday, April 7, 2000, in Asheboro.

Funeral service was 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where she was a member, with Father Joseph W. Mack officiating.

She was a native of Villa Park, Ill., and a homemaker.

Surviving are husband, Robert C. Tolen Sr.; son, Robert C. Tolen Jr. of Spirit Lake, Iowa; daughters, Deanne Young and Dorlene Wilson, both of Asheboro, Delynda Mehlhop of Houston, Texas; brothers, Leslie Russ of La Grange Park, Ill., Leland Russ of Downers Grove, Ill.; sisters, June Polk of St. Petersburg, Fla., Betty Jones of Hot Springs, Ark.; six grandchildren.

Francis M. Warner
MT. GILEAD - Francis Marion Warner, 71, of 6381 N.C. 73 West, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Northeast Medical Center, Concord.

Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Thursday at Wadeville Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lonnie Gibson and the Rev. Gary Long officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery, Troy, with military honors.

He was a native of Eagle Springs, a graduate of Catawba College and a retired school teacher with the Montgomery County Schools after 26 years. He was a member of the Civitans, VFW, was a Boy Scout leader and a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict.

Surviving are wife, Shirley Maginnis Warner of the home; son, Steven D. Warner of Concord; daughters, Janet W. Andrews and Connie D. Warner, both of Concord; stepmother, Odessa M. Thayer of Troy; stepbrother, Worth Thayer of Troy; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are son, Floyd Wayne Williams of Asheboro; daughter, Effie Marie Poindexter of Asheboro; sisters, Lola Jones of McLeansville, Lydia Warren of Beauford; brothers, Joe Ray Dunn of Lexington, Bill Dunn of Asheboro.

RANDLEMAN - Sidney Franklin Turner, 69, formerly of Randleman, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Esther Turner and a retired employee of Albright Quality Wood Turning, Inc. in Thomasville.

Surviving are daughter, Barbara Crotty of Randleman; son, Calvin S. Turner of Asheboro; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home of the daughter, 376 Effie St., Randleman.

Betty V. Parks
RAMSEUR - Betty Vuncannon Parks, 64, of 6335 O.H. Staley Road, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p .m. Thursday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Adrian Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Parks Cross Roads Christian Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, retired owner and operator of Parks Beauty Box and was a member of Fayetteville Street Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Samuel Parks of the home; son, Michael Parks of the home; mother, Bertha Morris Vuncannon of Ramseur; sisters, Nancy Cagle of Seagrove, Barbara Glasgow of Greenville.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, other times at the home.
