He was a native of Anson County and employed at Phillip Morris, Inc. in Concord.

He was a Randolph County native, a graduate of Northwestern University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an associate member of the Cape Fear Garden Club and of the committee to bring the U.S.S. North Carolina to Wilmington. He was an actor at WECT TV 6 and toured with Carol Channing.
