J. Ed Hughes

RANDLEMAN - John Edward Hughes, 78, of 2156 W.O.W. Road, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Clapp's Nursing Home, Asheboro.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Robert Kidd officiating. Burial will be in South Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, formerly employed with Arrow International and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are sons, J. Eddie Hughes II of Randleman; daughters, Julia Schweickart of St. Jacob, Ill., Joyce Judy of Ripley, Ohio, Cheryl Shelton of Franklinville, Joy Hughes of Randleman; brothers, Richard Hughes, George Hughes, both of Asheboro, Marvin Hughes of Ramseur; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Joy Hughes, 2160 W.O.W. Road, Randleman.

E. Ray Brower

SILER CITY - Emmitt Ray Brower, 81, of 2114 Old Coleridge Road, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Shelton and the Rev. Raymond Ward officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired farmer and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Irene Lineberry Brower of the home; sons, Perry Brower of Siler City, Aubrey Brower of Franklinville, Richard Brower of the home; daughter, Dolores Eberhart of Greensboro; sisters, Katherine McNabb of Midlothian, Va., Frances Paschal, Mary York, both of Asheboro, Evangeline Clark of Siler City; six grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Javan R. Smith

SILER CITY - Javan Raymond Smith, 92, of 554 Javan Smith Road, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Country Forest Manor.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Bob Way and the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a retired carpenter, painter and farmer, a member of the Adult Sunday School class and on several church committees.

Surviving are wife, Annie Bare Smith; daughter, Betty Crews of Kernersville; sons, Joe Smith, June Smith, Jesse Earl Smith, R.D. Smith, all of Siler City; half brother, Prentice Smith of Siler City; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

JAMESTOWN - Harold Lee Weaver, 72, of 401 Rollingwood Road, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at High Point Friends Meeting, where he was a member, with the Rev. David Kingrey, the Rev. Randy Quate and the Rev. Derald Smith. Burial will be in Springfield Friends Meeting Cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a graduate of High Point College, retired from Iowah National Mutual Insurance Co., a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Brotherhood Sunday School class at his church.

Surviving are wife, Helen Shropshire Weaver of the home; daughters, Susan Harrison of Thomasville, Kim Leonard of Badin Lake; four grandsons.

The family will be at Sechrest Funeral Home, High Point, 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

MT. GILEAD - Herbert Maxwell Chandler, 86, of 6800 Grassy Island Road, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery.

He was a native of Richmond County and a retired farmer.

Surviving are sons, Larry Chandler, Ronald Chandler, both of Mr. Gilead; brother, Wallace Chandler of Asheboro; three grandchildren.

The family will be at McKeithan Funeral Home, Mt. Gilead, 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

CARTHAGE - Claude E. Marsh Sr., 90, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Pinelake Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Carthage.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Red Branch Baptist Church, with the Rev. D.C. Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Fry-Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage, 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Felton Marsh, 372 Red Branch Road, Carthage.

Hazel L. Adams
Hazel Lee Adams, 78, of Asheboro, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Russ Ward, the Rev. Bruce Feltrup-Exum, Dr. James Baucom Sr. and Dr. James Baucom Jr. officiating.

She was a native of Erwin, the widow of Wendell "Winky" Adams, attended Watts Hospital School of Nursing, Durham, was a charter member of Hospice of Randolph and named 1997 Presbyterian Woman of the Year at her church.

Surviving are daughters, Mrs. James E. Baucom of High Point, Patricia Adams of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church following the service.

Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, is in charge of the arrangements.

Polly P. Cagle

Eloise Rebecca "Polly" Poole Cagle, 64, of 2485 Hopewell Friends Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at Duke Medical Center.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Adrian Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, attended Hopewell Friends Meeting, a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Delta Delta Chapter and was employed with Wachovia Bank, NA, in Asheboro for 46 years.

Surviving are husband, James D. Cagle of the home; daughter, Donna Jeane Cagle of Asheboro; sister, Jean Brown of Randleman.

The family will be at the funeral home 6:30-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of the daughter, 2684 Danny Bell Road.

She was a native of Rutherford County, retired from Klopman Mills, Central Falls plant and a member of Balfour Baptist Church.

Surviving are son, Roy Hester of Charlotte; stepsons, Roy Williams, Roger Williams, both of Asheboro; stepdaughters, Judy Groce of Ramseur, Peggy Williams of Southern Pines; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Demi K. Strayhorne

Demi Kay Strayhorne, infant daughter of Ivan and Shelia Strayhorne of 563 E. Dorsett St., Asheboro, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

A memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Meadowbrook Road Church of Christ, with the Rev. Amos Allen officiating.

Surviving in addition to her parents are grandparents, Mildred C. Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Blaine Strayhorne, all of Asheboro; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thornton Strayhorne of Asheboro.

Jerry W. Venable

GREENSBORO - Jerry Wayne Venable, 53, of 2004 Ontario St., died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, Vanstory Street, Greensboro. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park.

He was a native of Greensboro, a U.S. Army veteran, formerly employed with Rexham Corp. and Jimmy's Daytona as a state car safety inspector.

Surviving are wife, Ann Venable of the home; daughters, Penny Ann Venable, Stephanie Ann Hunt, both of Greensboro, Vikki Elayne Venable, Melissa Jean Venable, both of the home; brothers, Michael Fox of Asheboro, David M. Venable of Alaska; three grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

SILER CITY - W. Carl Groce Jr., 68, of 2135 Alston Bridge Road, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Rives Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ray Ledford and the Rev. Luther Lemon officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with Rev. Gerald Bridges officiating.

He was a native of Guilford County, the widower of Doris Fields Groce, retired from Chatham Motors, a deacon and Sunday School teacher for Men's #2 class at his church and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are daughter, Janet Groce of the home; sons, Sam Groce, Doug Groce, both of Siler City; sisters, Katherine Groce, Margie Cockman, Barbara Ann Teague, all of Siler City; brothers, Charles Groce of Siler City, George Groce of Franklinville; one granddaughter.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Woodrow W. Lindley

PITTSBORO - Woodrow Wilson Lindley, 85, of 1296 White Smith Road, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Robert Way and the Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a farmer, former administrative board member, trustee and Sunday School teacher at his church, a former member of Silk Hope Ruritan Club and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are daughter, Rita L. Rogers of Smithfield, Va.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

W. Lloyd Bean

CANDOR - Walter Lloyd Bean, 82, of 569 Farmers Market Road, died Thursday, April 2, 1998, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, with the Rev. Jack Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Candor Cemetery.

He was a native of Stanly County, the widower of Monnie Ellen Campbell Bean, a member of Candor Church of God of Prophecy and was a farmer.

Surviving are sons, Bernard C. Bean of Candor, Frankie Lloyd Bean of Biscoe, Jessie Walter Bean; daughters, Janice K. Parker of Fayetteville, Brenda Sue Hodges of Jefferson, Ga.; sister, Laruth B. Campbell of Biscoe; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday, other times at the home of Bernard Bean, 257 Bowman Road.

Victoria P. Robinson

TROY - Victoria Patterson Robinson, 91, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital, Troy.

Funeral service will be noon Saturday at Mt. Airy A.M.E. Zion Church, where she was the oldest member.

She was a native of Richmond County, the widow of Ollie Robinson and a former class leader at her church.

Surviving are daughters, Dorie Hardison of Washington, D.C., Irene Cain of Indianapolis, Ind., Sophia Robinson of the home; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kearns & Son Funeral Home, Troy, noon-8:30 p.m. Friday.

Aaron J. Shaw

DENTON - Aaron Junior Shaw, 71, of 19696 N.C. 8, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at his home.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of George B. Frye and a homemaker.
