SEAGROVE - Gertrude Spencer, 85, of 4940 Piney Ridge Church Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Asheboro Health & Rehabilitation Center

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Redeemed United Holy Church, with Elder Caterine Obie officiating. Burial will be in Piney Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and a retired employee of Asheboro City Schools Food Service Department.

Surviving are daughter, Elizabeth C. Brady of Seagrove; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church one hour prior to the service Saturday.

SILER CITY - Charles Howard Cartrette, 76, of 718 Lakewood Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Chatham Hospital, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakley Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Timothy A. Howell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Columbus County, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, had worked for Selig-Manufacturing and was self-employed.

Surviving are wife, Evelyn Milligan Cartrette of Siler City; sons, Eddie Ronald Cartrette of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Charles Howard Cartrette Jr. of Tobaccoville, Darryl Lynn Cartrette of Siler City; daughter, Pamela C. Ritter of Siler City; sisters, Edna M. Spivey of Loris, S.C., Virginia Cains and Myrtle Coleman, both of Tabor City; brothers, Floyd Cartrette of Virginia, Paul Cartrette and Ottis Cartrette, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Jesse L. Lamar
LEXINGTON - Jesse Leroy Lamar, 94, of Fritts Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington, with the Rev. John Gottula and Dr. Jim Martin officiating. Burial will be in Reeds United Methodist Church Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Lizzie Marie Fritts Lamar, was retired from Henredon Furniture in High Point, was a member of Reeds United Methodist Church and was a Sunday School teacher at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Thomasville.

Surviving are sons, Joel Lamar of Asheboro, Ronald Lamar of Greer, S.C.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

TROY - Helen Travis Hogan, 60, of Evans Rest Home, Mt. Gilead, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Evans Rest Home.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Forks of Little River Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Dexter Gibson officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County, attended Troy Church of God and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughter, Diane Hogan of Candor; brothers, Selby Hogan and Obert Hogan, both of Troy, Randy Hogan of Asheboro.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Odell S. McDonald
ABERDEEN - Odell Shaver McDonald, 79, of 996 Foxfire Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Chatham Memorial Hospital, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Del Parkinson officiating. Burial will be in McDonald's Chapel Cemetery.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Gary McDonald of Taylorsville, Kenneth McDonald, Tim McDonald, both of Aberdeen; daughters, Linda Beddingfield of Asheboro, Beth McDonald of Aberdeen; sister, Grace Shaver of Jackson Springs; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

ASHEBORO - David R. Johnson, 51, of 1000 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at C.C. Hodges Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in Oakland/McCrary Cemetery in Ramseur.

He was a native of Guilford County, formerly employed in the textile industries.

Surviving are mother, Blanche A. Johnson of Ramseur; daughters, Michelle Johnson and Constance Davis, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; son, David R. Johnson Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; sisters, Mary Curtis and Shirley Daniels, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Jean Covington of Asheboro; brothers, Bobby McKenzie, Jessie Johnson and Frank McKenzie, all of Ramseur, Jimmy and Leroy McKenzie, both of Liberty, Thomas Johnson of Greensboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 1:30-2 p.m. prior to the service on Sunday.

JULIAN - Dorothy Isley Pickett, 85, of 2114 N.C. 62 East, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at Beverly Health Care-Starmount in Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, at Shiloh United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Carroll Lupton Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Gilmore Memorial Park.

She was a native of Alamance County and was retired from Allsheer Hosiery in Liberty.

Surviving are husband, George R. Pickett of the home; sisters, Annie Dare Cheek, Edith Overman, both of Liberty, Betty Melvin, Jean Pike, both of Burlington.

The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

STALEY - Georgia Nettles of 2601 Olivers Chapel Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at SunBridge Health Care, Siler City.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Olivers Chapel Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving is niece, Helen Headen of the home.

GREENSBORO - Hattie Hudson Nixon, 91, of 836 S. Elm St., died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at the Evergreens Nursing Center.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Guilford Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of George Shellie Nixon, was retired from J. P. Stevens, Inc. and was a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Sarah N. Sockwell of Gibsonville, Exie N. Farrar of Greensboro; sons, Earsel S. Nixon of Reidsville, Earl H. Nixon of Greensboro; sisters, Annie Hudson Graves, Lona Hudson Kennedy, both of Randleman; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Street, Greensboro, is in charge of the arrangements.

Warren H. Steed
CANDOR - Warren Harrison Steed, 83, of 324 E. Main St., died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at his home.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Candor Town Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, the widower of Marion McCown Steed, and a member of Candor United Methodist Church and the Candor Lions Club. He was owner/operator of Steed's Plant Nursery in Candor, a member of the North Carolina Nursery Association, had been involved in developing the Horticulture program at Sandhills Community College, where he had a hall and scholarships named after him and had been honored by the Montgomery County District Scouts.

The family will be at the home.

ASHEBORO - Wilburn Eugene Craven, 71, of 2627 S. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at West Asheboro Church of God, where he was a member, with the Rev. Thurman Jenkins, the Rev. Jonathan Martin, and the Rev. Ron Martin officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, clerk and treasurer at his church for over 40 years, owner and operator of C&H Furniture and former co-owner of Central Chair Co.

Surviving are wife, Maggie Hill Craven of the home; daughters, Lynda Martin of Denver, Colo., Debbie Lairsey of Asheboro; brother, Harold "Pete" Craven of Asheboro; four grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 6-9 p.m. Sunday, other times at the home.

ASHEBORO - Ruby Mae Kirkman Wright, 87, of 3412 U.S. 64 East, Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cornerstone Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Garry L. Reeder and the Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Cross Christian Church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County and retired from Cetwick Silk Mill.

Surviving are husband, Newport L. Wright; sons, David Wright of Greensboro, Kenneth Wright, John Wright, both of Asheboro; daughters, Betsy Foster, Wanda Wright, both of Asheboro, Mary Francis Byrkit of Largo, Fla., Martha Gail (Sue) Brown of Franklinville; brothers, Henry Kirkman of Franklinville, Glenn Freeman of Asheboro; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

Flora M. Moffitt
RAMSEUR - Flora McCoy Moffitt, 90, of Erect Road, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Shiloh Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Bruce McLanahan and the Rev. David Schwartz officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, Terry W. Moffitt, Graham B. Moffitt, both of Ramseur, C. Alan Moffitt of Asheboro; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the church 5-7 p.m. Monday.

Funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City. Burial will be in Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery, Pittsboro.

He was a native of Chatham County and was retired from Collins & Aikman.

Surviving are daughters, Edna R. McNeill of Pittsboro, Jeannie R. Moody of Siler City, Alice R. Conner of Cary; sisters, Betty Lou Edmonds of Chapel Hill, Faye Wilson of Durham, Vera Johnson of Pittsboro; brothers, Clyde Riddle of Durham, Billy Riddle of Pittsboro, Donnie Riddle of Snow Camp, Tommy Riddle of Durham; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Monday.

GREENSBORO - Robert A. Merritt, 93, formerly of 2001 Dellwood Drive, Greensboro, died Friday, Dec. 15, 2000, at SunBridge Care Center in Asheboro.

Memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm St. Chapel.

He was a native of Guilford County, the widower of Louise Merritt, a graduate of Greensboro High School, Washington & Lee University, and UNC School of Law. He was an attorney for over 60 years, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of West Market St. Methodist Church. He was a member and former president of the Greensboro Bar Association, the ABA, the IOOF, the American Legion, and a past commander of the local VFW post.

Surviving are sons, Robert L. Merritt of Asheboro, Dr. Frank S. Merritt of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

CARTHAGE - Mary Ann Bibey, 72, of 2420 Niagara-Carthage Road, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday, at Crossroads Community Church, with Evangelists W. David Bibey and Layton West officiating. Burial will be in Holly Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Joseph M. Bibey and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Alice B. Lewis, Joanne B. Huntington, both of Carthage; son, W. David Bibey of Carthage; brothers, Neill A. Priest, Lonnie A. Priest, both of Vass; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

He was a native of Marion County, Ind., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and a retired fireman.

Surviving are wife, Louise Luther Edwards of the home; son, Ralf E. Edwards of Indianapolis, Ind.; daughter, Nina Gale Bernsmeier of Sanford; sister, Mary Jane Gueutal of Madison, Ohio; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
