LIBERTY - Garfield L. Greene, 81, of 6972 Bowman Dairy Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty. Burial will be in Smithwood United Church of Christ Cemetery.

He was a member of Smithwood United Church of Christ, a U.S. Navy veteran, a farmer and was retired from the Merchant Marines.

Surviving are wife, Winnabelle S. Greene of the home; sons, Tom D. Greene of Montague, Calif., David Garfield Greene of Smithfield, Va., John Bell Greene of Liberty; daughters, Sheila Humble and Neva Maillet, both of Liberty; sister, Vaughnzie Bowman of Liberty; brother, John Greene of Texas; two grandsons.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

Bessie C. Overman
LIBERTY - Bessie Mae Cash Overman, 92, formerly of Liberty, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in Las Cruces, N.M.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Loflin Funeral Home, Liberty, with the Rev. Newell McMahan officiating.

She was a native of Chester, S.C.

Surviving are daughters, Christine Kulick of Las Cruces, N.M., Carolyn McMahan of Newton, Charlene Fry of Huntersville; sister, Nell Kime of Pollicksville; brother, Bill Voss of Kinston; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice organization of one's choice.

DENTON - Tommy Russell, 53, of 610 Jim Elliott Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Chris Smith and the Rev. Claudie Harrison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Davidson County, a computer technician with Selectron Inc. in Charlotte, a 1965 graduate of Denton High School and a 1967 graduate of Davidson County Community College.

Surviving are wife, Jeanette Russell of the home; son, Danny Carelock of Richfield; daughter, Melenda Arbaugh of Lexington, S.C.; mother, Myrtle Lanier Russell of Denton; sisters, Joyce Parrish of Lexington, Juanita Loftin of Denton; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home.

TROY - Winnie Ruth Ingram Kearns Harris, 84, of 210 Shaw Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Manor Care of Pinehurst.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Little River UMC Cemetery, Mt. Gilead, with the Rev. Dexter Gibson officiating.

She was a native of Montgomery County, attended Troy Wesleyan Church and was a retired weaver with Springs Mills Inc.

Surviving are sons, Leo Kearns and Eugene "PeeWee" Kearns, both of Troy; sisters, Annie I. Rush of McLeansville, Bess Dolgos of Pine Knolls Shore, Susan Monroe of Camden, S.C.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Leo Kearns, 204 Shaw Road, Troy.

Fonnie M. Helms
ROBBINS - Fonnie Moore Helms, 88, of 260 Church St., died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Pinehurst Nursing Center, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Claude Chaffin and the Rev. Edwin Moore officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Moore County, the widow of Odis Helms and a homemaker.

Surviving are son, Archie L. Helms of Greensboro and Salisbury; daughters, Ometa Marley of Candor, Leta Ann Hildreth and Margaret Hildreth, both of Polkton, Sylvia Farlow of Robbins; sister, Stella M. Davis of Robbins; 19 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, other times at the home of Sylvia Farlow, 260 Church St., Robbins.

Edna B. Hodgin
ASHEBORO - Edna Brown Hodgin, 78, of 1987 U.S. 64 East, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Danny Hosler officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Jasper Maurice Hodgin, a member of Oakwood Park Baptist Church and was the owner and operator of Hodgin's Florist.

Surviving are son, Bob G. Hodgin of Banner Elk; daughter, Sarah H. McCoy of Asheboro; sisters, Bertha Brown, Ruth Ingold, Gladys Herlocker, all of Asheboro, Violet Cox of Sophia; brothers, Luther Brown, David Brown, Colon Brown, all of Sophia; two grandsons; one great-grandson.

He was a native of Rockingham County, the former owner and operator of Smitty's Auto Repair and he attended Glad Tidings Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Ruby A. Smith; sons, Roger Smith of Robbins, Steve Smith of Hayes, Va., David Smith, Jerry Smith, Rick Smith, all of Asheboro; daughters, Kathy Smith, Linda Wall, Lorrie Varner, all of Asheboro, Susie Pines of Greensboro; brother, Walter Raleigh Smith of Asheboro; half brothers, Ken Pulliam, Carl Pulliam, both of Eden; stepmother, Violet Smith of Asheboro; half sister; Phyllis Williams of Fayetteville; 15 grandchildren.

SOPHIA - Norman Andrew Rich, 77, of 1309 Rich Farm Trail, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Pugh Funeral Home, Randleman, with the Rev. Jesse Wallace and the Rev. Arthur Swaney officiating. Burial will be in South Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, was retired from Hatteras Yacht Co. in High Point and was a member of Whitehall Evangelical Methodist Church.

Surviving are wife, Edna Louisa Rich of Sophia; sons, Charles Wayne Rich, Don Gray Rich, Eugene Rich, Jerry Lee Rich, all of Sophia; daughter, Linda R. Coble of Sophia; brother, James Rich of Sophia; sisters, Ina Nelson, Annie Craven, Lucille Rush, all of Sophia; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

TROY - Jessie Penn Hurley, 91, of Pinehurst Nursing Center, Pinehurst, formerly of Troy, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the center.

Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Long Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry Beaver officiating.

He was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Long Hill Baptist Church and a retired painter.

Surviving is half-sister, Rose Latham of Asheboro.

There will be visitation.

Pugh-Troy Funeral Home, Troy, is in charge of the arrangements.

Patsy M. Morgan
BISCOE - Patsy Marie Morgan, 56, of 401 Lambert Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home, Star, with the Rev. Ron Kruger officiating. Burial will be in Biscoe Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County, a member of Main Street Baptist Church, Biscoe, and was formerly employed with Springs Industries Inc.

Surviving are husband, Willie J. Morgan of Biscoe; mother, Flonnie Grey Sheppard of Biscoe; brothers, Mickey Sheppard of Fayetteville, Steven Sheppard, Randy Sheppard, both of Biscoe.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Mary B. Blake
STAR - Mary Boyd Blake, 91, of 901 S. Main St., died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Southside Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Bruce Dickerson officiating. Burial will be in Biscoe Cemetery.

She was a native of Montgomery County and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Clara Williams of Star, Viola Freeman, Shirley Jarrell, both of Asheboro, Betty Kiser of Lakeview, Louvene McBride of Danville, Va.; sons, James Blake of San Carlos, Calif., the Rev. Curtis Blake of Biscoe; sisters, Magnolia Parsons of Candor, Marvie Furr of Southern Pines; brother, Pate Boyd of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

RAMSEUR - Cecil Mae Hardy West Massey, 88, of 151 King Road Apt. 2D, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Asheboro Church of Jesus, with the Rev. Scottie Daniel, the Rev. Gordon Massey and the Rev. James Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Franklinville U.M.C. Cemetery.

She was a native of Longs, S.C., was retired from Randolph Mills in Franklinville and she attended Asheboro Church of Jesus.

Surviving are husband, Leland J. Massey of the home; sons, Elridge T. West of Harrells, Charles West of Winnabow, Michael W. West of Randleman; stepson, Gerald Richard Massey of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Molly Brooks of Siler City; 21 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 40 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-9 p.m. Saturday, other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael W. West, 1561 Henley Country Road, Randleman.

He was a native of Randolph County and was retired from Ramtex of Ramseur.

Surviving are wife, Ruby R. Routh of Randleman; sons, Kyle Routh, Terry Routh, both of Randleman; daughters, Lisa Lemonds, Sharon Terwilliger, both of Randleman; brother, Dennis Routh of Franklinville; 10 grandchildren.

SOPHIA - Ernest McClane Hill, 74, of 4509 Coltrane Cedar Road, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, with the Rev. Gary R. Hill officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, the widower of Verta Lee Vestal Hill, was retired from Baker Furniture Company and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are sons, Dwight M. Hill, Gary R. Hill and Charlie M. Hill, all of Sophia; brothers, Walter Hill of High Point, Vestal Hill of Sophia; sisters, Beatrice Smith of Archdale, Jessie Mullis of High Point; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Marshall Thompson Jr.
CANDOR - John Marshall "Bunky" Thompson Jr., 49, of 261 Privette Road, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Candor, as a result of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Candor Baptist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Doug Kennedy and Dr. J.B. Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Candor Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites.

He was a native of Montgomery County and owner and operator of April Express, Inc. trucking company. He was a former policeman with the Town of Candor, a former deputy sheriff with Montgomery County Sheriff's Department and a volunteer fireman with the Candor Fire Department. He was a Sunday School Superintendent, a Sunday School teacher and an usher at his church, and was a member of Biscoe Lodge 437 AF&AM.

Surviving are sons, Jordan G. Thompson, Jonathan H. Thompson, both of Candor; parents, John M. and Ruth Field Thompson of Candor.

The family will be at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home, Candor, 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Gladys G. Wall
ASHEBORO - Gladys Gray Wall, 78, of 416 N. Elm St., Asheboro, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Randolph Hospital.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro, with the Rev. Robert Kidd officiating.

She was a native of Asheboro, retired from Union Carbide and she attended Asheboro Friends Meeting.

Surviving are son, Ronald Smith of Trinity; daughter, Anne Herlocker of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters, Doris Patterson, Alise Everhart, both of Asheboro; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home following the service.

Howard Sibert
TRINITY - Howard Sibert, 84, of 5430 Haywood Road, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Haizlip Funeral Home, High Point, with the Rev. James Harris Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Carolina Biblical Gardens.

He was a native of McCormick, S.C., the widower of Rosa Martin Sibert and worked part-time with Leach & Wagner Grocery Store. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Deacon Board and former president of the senior Usher Board.

Surviving are daughter, Jennie S. Bracken of the home; son, William Sibert of Clinton, Md.; brothers, Henry B. Sibert of Trinity, Dennis Sibert of Washington, D.C.; sister, Ethel Lee Smith of Philadelphia, Pa.; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
