James B. Fields

SILER CITY - James B. Fields, 77, of 814 N. Garden Ave., died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Siler City Chapel, where he was a member, with the Rev. Tommy Steele officiating. Burial will be in Chatham Memorial Park.

He was a native of Chatham County, retired from Founders Furniture, was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a life-time member of American Legion Post #81, Liberty and was a life-time member of the DAV in Asheboro.

Surviving are wife, Ruth Lassiter Fields; daughter, Darlene F. Green of Greensboro; brother, Lewis Fields of Goldston; sisters, Ollie F. Riddle, Josie F. Oldham, Lucy F. Wall, all of Goldston, Mary F. Graves of Siler City; one granddaughter.

The family will be at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, 7-8:30 p.m. Monday.

Evelyn W. McNeill

ROBBINS - Evelyn Wentz McNeill, 79, of Hemp Street, died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Earl Dulaney and the Rev. Robert Bundy officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

She was a native of Richmond County, the retired owner and operator of McNeill's Store, a member of the United Methodist Women, a former Sunday School teacher and a former member of the church choir and the administrative board.

Surviving are son, Jerry Howard McNeill of Robbins; brothers, Richard A. Wentz of Bishopville, S.C., Carl Clifford Wentz of Levittown, Long Island, N.Y.; two grandchildren.

Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, is in charge of the arrangements.

CARTHAGE - Mary Margie Black, 74, of Pinelake Healthcare, died Monday, April 13, 1998.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Culdee Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Chris Bobo officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughter, Jennifer B. Williams of Cameron; son, James A. Black of West End; brothers, Frank Margie, Leonard Margie, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren.

FRANKLINVILLE - Tony Wayne Cox, 16, of 3998 Jones St. Ext., died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Harry V. Neal

WINSTON-SALEM - Harry Vincent Neal, 75, of 1417 Thurmond St., died Sunday, April 12, 1998, at Forsyth Medical Center.

Funeral service will be noon Thursday at Saint Stephen Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, where he was a member, with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Burial will be in the Salisbury National Cemetery.

He was a native of Rockingham County, had served with the Lott Carey Missionary Group and the Men's Sunday School class #1 at his church, was a retired assistant manager of Eckerd Drug Co. and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, Ida Mae Neal of the home; daughters, Francine J. Neal of the home, Natalie S. Neal of Winston-Salem; son, Vincent M. Neal of Winston-Salem.

The family will be at Russell Funeral Home, Winston-Salem, 7-8 p.m. Wednesday.

JULIAN - Charles W. Long Jr. of 5851 Cadiz Road, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his home.

Surviving are wife, Winifred S. Long of the home; son, Charles W. Long II of Greensboro; daughters, Eva Long Griffith, Angie Long, both of Greensboro, Sherri Watkins of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers, Joe Louis Long of Liberty, Preston Long of Julian; five grandchildren.

BEAR CREEK - Lucille White Phillips, 83, of 1740 Devils Tramping Ground Road, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at Chatham Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Providence United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Robert Griffith and the Rev. Dwight Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Tyson Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, the widow of Arthur D. Phillips and a homemaker.

Surviving are daughters, Barbara Gordon of Bear Creek, Joanne Johnson, Marcelle Poe, both of Siler City, Janette Bollinger of Granite Falls; sister, Margaret Adams of Siler City; brothers, Howard Taft White of Bonlee, Jack White of Ramseur; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

Susan "Susie" Eller Willard Bunting, 83, of 156 W. Academy St., Asheboro, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro.

Tony W. Cox

FRANKLINVILLE - Tony Wayne Cox, 16, of 3998 Jones St. Ext., died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Ridge Christian Church, with the Rev. Jeff Stapleton and the Rev. Charles Stout officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Guilford County, a freshman at Eastern Randolph High School and attended Pleasant Ridge Christian Church.

Surviving are parents, Jerry and Donna Cox of the home; grandparents, H.V. and Eloese Cox Jr. and Alvin Beane, all of Franklinville.

Verta V. Hill

SOPHIA - Verta Lee Vestal Hill, 73, of 4509 Coltrane Cedar Road, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Cumby Funeral Home, Archdale, with the Rev. Ed Arroyo and the Rev. Gary Hill officiating. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Surry County, a homemaker and a charter member of Blessing Baptist Church.

Surviving are husband, Ernest M. Hill of the home; sons, Dwight M. Hill, Charlie M. Hill, both of Sophia, Gary R. Hill of Randleman; brothers, Bobby Vestal of High Point, Neal Vestal of Archdale, Gene Vestal of Trinity; sisters, Naomi French of High Point, Barbara Ann Cooper of Sophia; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday.

She was a native of Randolph County, attended Farmer School, retired from Randolph Hospital and was a homemaker.

Pritchard of Asheboro, Anita Pritchard of Bennett, Alesia Bunton of Liberty; sons, Van Pritchard, Steve Pritchard, both of Asheboro; sisters, Hilda Bulla of Sophia, Ruby Carr of Winston-Salem, Maggie Bibb of Richmond, Va., Henrietta Langdon of Asheboro; three grandchildren.

The family will be at Ridge Funeral Home, Asheboro, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Dr. James T. Bowman

Dr. James T. Bowman died Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, in Guadalajara, Mexico.

A private memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Pleasant Union United Methodist Church, Julian.

He was a native of Denton, Emeritus Professor of Biology at Utah State University in Logan, where he was a geneticist and a teacher, a 1961 graduate of Duke University in biology and a 1965 graduate of the University of California, Davis, with a Ph.D.

Surviving are daughters, Carolyn Higgs of Chinle, Ariz., Wenda Goe of North Huntington, Pa.; sister, Edith Briles of Asheboro; six grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Union United Methodist Church building or cemetery funds, c/o Laurie Bowman, 6522 Bowman Dairy Road, Julian, N.C. 27283.

John Stanley Tupper, 80, of 321 Eldorado Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at the V.A. Hospital, Salisbury.

He was a native of Randolph County, retired from J.P. Stevens, Randleman, after 15 years and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was a native of Randolph County and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are sisters, Viola Spencer Greene of Greensboro, Mary Spencer Robbins of Jamaica, N.Y., Ernestine Spencer Coble of Randleman; brother, Woody Smith of Salt Lake City, Utah.

Nannie L. McDowell

HIGH POINT - Nannie Lou "Granny" McDowell, 86, of 304 Fourth St., died Monday, April 13, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. F.O. Bass Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.

She was a native of Pinehurst, the widow of Clarence McDowell, a member of the Jubilee Choir and the H.W. Cobb Ladies Sunday School Class at her church and a member of the Willing Workers Club. She was a member of The Blind Association and was employed with the J. Ivey Barr family.

Surviving are 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at New Beginning Full Gospel Ministries, High Point, 7-8 p.m. Friday, other times at the home.

Haizlip Funeral Home, High Point, is in charge of the arrangements.
