SOUTHERN PINES - Sibyl Cooper Marsh, 70, of Skyline, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at her home.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Cameron Baptist Church, with Dr. Greg Poplin officiating. Burial will be in Cameron Cemetery.

Surviving are husband, Claude E. Marsh Jr.; sons, Vernard Marsh of Carthage, Rex Marsh of Greensboro; sisters, Lois Moses of Cameron, Helen Wolfe of Carthage; brothers, Fred Cooper of Hamlet, Clyde Cooper of Raleigh; three grandchildren.

Harold D. Wiley

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - Harold Dean Wiley, 78, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his home.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., where he was a member, with the Rev. J.C. McLendon officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in Beal Memorial Cemetery, Fort Walton Beach.

He was a World War II veteran and retired chief master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force and was a deacon at his church.

Surviving are wife, Billie Wiley of Fort Walton Beach; son Dean Wilson Wiley of Ferguson, Mo.; brothers, Wilson Wiley of Asheboro, Glen Wiley of High Point; three grandchildren.

Little Chapel Funeral Home, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., was in charge of the arrangements.

Edgar Vernon Benbow, 64, of 107 E. Balfour Ave., Asheboro, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

John S. Tupper

John Stanley Tupper, 80, of 321 Eldorado Drive, Asheboro, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at the VA Hospital, Salisbury.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, with the Rev. Avery Smith officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, with Masonic rites.

He was a native of Delanco, N.J., a retired insurance salesman for John Hancock, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a life member of American Legion Post 311 and a member of V.F.W. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and of Shadow of the Cross Baptist Church.

Surviving are wife, Janice Dixon Tupper; son, Larry Barton Tupper of Coleridge; daughter, Linda Shute of Asheboro; brother, Charles Tupper of Bridgeston, N.J.; sister, Harriett T. Warden of Magnolia, N.J.; five grandchildren; three grandchildren.

Leo W. Payne

Leo Willis Payne, 83, of 542 Greensboro St., Asheboro, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Saint Luke United Methodist Church, where he was a member.

He was a native of Randolph County, a graduate and salutatorian of Randolph Training School and attended Shaw University. He was a 27 year employee with Burlington Industries in the chemical department and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a lay leader, chairman of the Trustee and Steward boards and a member of the pastor parish committee, the finance committee, the United Methodist Men and the Men's choir at his church and was an honorary member of all church committees. He was a member of Oakland Lodge #501 A.F. and A.M. where he was Worshipful Master and secretary and was involved in civic organizations such as NAACP, Boy Scouts of America, Human Relations Council and the local committee of George Washington Carver College.

Surviving are wife, Nancy Cross Payne of the home; daughters, Cynthia P. Williams of Kernersville, Vanessa P. Brooks of Asheboro; sister, Roxolo Payne of Asheboro; brother, James A. Payne of Asheboro; four grandchildren; one stepgrandson.

The family will be at C.C. Hodges Funeral Home, Asheboro, 7-8 p.m. Monday.

Jewell M. Jackson

Jewell Lanier Major Jackson, 90, of 1000 S. Park Drive, Asheboro, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Randolph Hospital.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Burial will be in Marlboro Friends Meeting Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a member of Dogwood Acres Presbyterian Church and retired from B.B. Walker Shoe Company.

Surviving are grandsons, whom she raised, Greg Major, Randy Major, both of Asheboro, David Major of Archdale, Boyce Major of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters, Chloe Maness of Ulah, Blanche Johnson of Asheboro.

The family will be at the funeral home 7-9 p.m. Sunday.

RAMSEUR - William Clyde Saunders, 70, of 6062 Clint Caviness Road, died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

A memorial graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church Cemetery near Bennett, with the Rev. Kenneth Huggins and the Rev. Tom Hill officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from Glendale Company, Siler City.

Surviving are sons, Billy Saunders of Ramseur, Jeffrey Saunders of Bear Creek; mother, Roxie Cain Saunders of Ramseur; brothers, Lynn Saunders, Boyd Saunders, both of Ramseur; sisters, Elaine Brown of Asheboro, Wilma Beck of Ramseur; three grandchildren.

Surviving are wife, Winifred L. Watt of the home; daughters, Winifred Gebeaux of Pleasant Garden, Barbara Williams of Norwalk, Conn.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Robert L. Kennedy

PLEASANT GARDEN - Robert "Bullwinkle" Leonce Kennedy, 68, died Friday, April 17, 1998, at his home.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Vanstory Chapel, Greensboro.

He was a native of Ohio, a U.S. Army and Air Force veteran and a Korean War veteran, past CD of GWRRA Chapter I-2, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Moose Lodge #685 and of Eastern Star Virgin Chapter #17.

Surviving are wife, Marlene B. Kennedy; daughters, Kathleen Anderson of Manassas, Va., Mary Jones of Seagrove, Kandy Gill of Indianapolis, Ind., Carmen Cross of Pleasant Garden; sons, Kerry Kennedy of Inman, S.C., Mitchell Wagoner of the home; stepmother, Alice Kennedy of Indianapolis, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home following the service, other times at the home.

TROY - Iris Russell Harwood of River Haven, Albemarle, died Thursday, April 16,1998.

Funeral service will be 2 p m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Troy, with the Rev. Charles Cook officiating. Burial will be in Southside Cemetery.

She was the widow of William Earle Harwood.

Surviving are son, William Grady Harwood of Flower Mound, Texas; sisters, Grace R. McMillan of Troy, Lois R. Tedder of Mt. Gilead; brothers, Donald H. Russell of Troy, Dale A. Russell of Williamsburg, Va.

He was a native of Montgomery County, retired from Wennonah Cotton Mill and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are wife, June Brooks Story of the home; son, Ronald Story of Asheboro; daughters, Kayron Hartley, Rebecca Story, both of Lexington; brother, Johnny Story of Lexington; sister, Nannie McKay of Harrisburg; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

O. Harlon Cassady

ROBBINS - Orval Harlon Cassady, 67, of 164 Fentress Road, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Center Christian Church, with the Rev. Bennie Maness and the Rev. Burton King officiating. Burial will be in Pine Rest Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and a retired supervisor with the N.C. Department of Transportation after 48 years.

Surviving are wife, Ruby Brown Cassady of the home; daughter, Lisa R. Cassady of the home; sons, Randy Cassady, Charlie Cassady, both of Robbins; brother, Sulon Cassady of Greensboro; sisters, Juanita Williamson, Mearl Allen, both of Robbins, Alma Brewer of Asheboro; three grandsons.

The family will be at Kennedy Funeral Home, Robbins, 7-9 p.m. Monday, other times at the home of Juanita Willamson, 5196 N.C. 705 North, Robbins.

He was a native of Randolph County and was retired from Beamon Corp., Liberty.

Surviving are wife, Eulah Mae Powers Spencer; son, Larry Spencer of Kernersville; stepdaughters, Pat Smith, Sandra Thomas, Linda Wood, all of Ramseur; stepsons, Ray Marley of Coleridge, Ricky Marley of Asheboro; sisters, Mattie Woodell of Asheboro, Ruby Burcham of Galax, Va.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home, Ramseur, 7-9 p.m. Monday.

He was a native of Randolph County, attended Duke University and was a pastor of Friends meetings in Mt. Airy, Asheboro and Chatham County. He was the superintendent of the N.C. Yearly Meeting of Friends for 16 years and was the author of several books and pamphlets on Quaker practices and heritage.

Surviving are wife, Mary Edith Woody Hinshaw; daughter, Helen H. Shore of Asheboro; sons, Dr. Howard T. Hinshaw of Charlotte, Dr. Waldo S. Hinshaw of Burlingame, Calif.; seven grandchildren.

The family will be at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, Friendly Road, Greensboro, 7-9 p.m. Monday.
